Ya, but playing a multiplayer game on a console is awesome. You can yell at your buddies in the room, the game is social, and it is not exclusive to LAN adn 'net geeks. This is why GoldenEye did so well a few years ago. Nothing can beat a smart first person shooter with good multiplayer games and a hand full of controllers.

Futhermore, Halo 2 for the xbox will probaby be out a good year before it comes out for MacOS and Windows....that is, if it -ever- comes out for MacOS and Windows. Remember, Bungie only promised a Mac and PC verion of 'Halo'...not it's sequels.

  2. Re:3 years in the making; finally on Halo for the PC and Mac · · Score: 2

It was first demo'ed on a Mac, however Halo was always intended to be released on both Windows and MacOS. Bungie hasn't made a Mac-only game in a long long time. I highly doubt they would ever even consider making a huge mac-only title again. There's just too much money to be made with a Windows version.

  3. Toast does NOT CONTAIN DRM Software on Latest Toast Update Combats Fair Use · · Score: 5, Informative

This was posted to VerionTracker.com last night.

I am the Toast product manager. I wanted to set the facts straight with respect to the 'Restrictions' section in the end user license agreement (EULA) that is displayed at installation of Toast 5.1.4 and Jam 5.0.1 (both the latest versions of our software). 1) Toast and Jam do not include any digital rights management (DRM) software. 2) Toast and Jam do not dynamically download and update any software on your system, either automatically behind the scenes, or upon your request. 3) Toast and Jam do not store and collect any personally identifiable information about you or what you record, or transmit anything to Roxio, any of its partners, or any content provider. 4) Toast and Jam do not restrict you from recording any content that you have the legal right to use. Toast and Jam use the same EULA that Roxio's PC burning product, Easy CD Creator, uses. Easy CD Creator leverages aspects of Windows Media Technology, which does include DRM components. Hence, the language in the EULA. Our EULAs are shared across both products because it saves time and money with respect to legal, documentation and translation into multiple languages. So no need to worry. All is well with Toast. Thank you for your continued support. Regards, The Toast Product Manager BTW - yes, you'll see that I have given our product 5 stars. I couldn't resist.

Can someone update this story or what? Moreover, next time I adise -using- this software before posting a rant to slashdot ;)

  13. No, Moby's last ablum -sucked- on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 5, Interesting

Moby is feel'n the burn because 18 sucked. Tons of people ran out to buy 18 because Play was great... hence the great initial sales. However, after most people placed 18 in their CD player and realized that 18 was not as good as Play (it was like a bizzaro rehashed version of Play), the word got out, and sales slowed down.

Go to any record store which sells used CDs... you can find a million and one copies of 18 used. Used CD stores are a -great- way to tell if a new album is good or bad. If a lot of people are buying it, and keeping it... it is probably good. Yet, if a lot of people are buying it and selling it back for 4 or 5 bucks, it probably sucks.

I think the numbers speak for themselfs. I'm obviously not the only one that ran out to buy 18 and was let down.

It'd be awesome if we could organize some positive rallies in California. It would be hard to keep a bunch of marching middle class, riaa hating, suburbanites out of the news.

I'm probably going to send in this story into the guardian, the nation, as well as projectcensored.org This will be picked up an ranted about by the indi media for sure.

  16. No, he is right, Mac viri are still quite rare on Win32/Linux Cross-Platform Virus · · Score: 2

Most of those viri are quite old, and they usually only screw with classic MacOS (if they are compatible with OS 9, which they might not be since many were designed for earlier versions of MacOS) ...or perhaps some carbon apps.

Moreover, most mac viri are dished out to those who pirate mac software on IRC, Hotline, Carracho, etc. I've been a mac user for many many years, and I've never recived an email virus.

There are really only a handfull of viri out their that can affect OS 9 and or OS X. Most usually do not do that much, and it is almost as if you really have to go out of your way to get infected.

Within the past few years, development of Mac antivirus software has all but come to a full stop (anyone remember Disinfectant?...RIP). Norton AntiVirus is just about the only thing you can buy for virus protection on MacOS, and most sales go toward paranoid mac users who really don't know any better. Furthermore, it seems to me as if the folks at Symantec now only caters toward killing lame little Apple scripts that mac users make to screw with other mac users.

Now I don't really want to get into the reasons why MacOS is more or less prone to viri. I think a lot of this is more sociolgical then technical. OS X might start to see the advent of more viri since it has been atracting a geekier crowd, but we will see.

This means you will not have to worry about which media player you have residing on your desktop. Once these royalty issues clear up (which they may have), most media players should be supporting mpeg4 by the year's end.

So, seriously, who cares if this media player can't run on Linux. Ya I guess being able to have the sorenson codec would be nice, but I think a lot of web developers are going to favor content which plays any place on anything. I know I will. It'll be nice not to save content in multiple formats or write dumb java scripts which check media players.

It was soooo predictable. You know robin williams and pacino are both going to go down eventually, but not before pacino solves his little problem at the last possible minute. And Ms Swank... come on, form the get go you know she is the one to find the dirt on pacino and she's just too damn cute to not be held hostage by the end of this movie.

Nolan's other films entertained me a lot more.

  20. I'd like to poop on this movie on Review: Insomnia · · Score: 2

This was not Chris Nolan's best film. He'd tried to use Pacino's Insomnia as a gimic, but it was a weak gimic to fall back upon. Pacino's Insomnia was by no means as cool as the short-term memory problems that screwed with our heads in Momento. Moreover, Pacino's Insomnia did not even seem that -important- within this movie. Pacino seemed to function quite fine at work reguardless of the fact that he had been up for days.

All in all, this movie was veeeeery predictable, and that whole "good cop gone bad" story has been played out million times before. Watch Larceny or Momento... they are better.

Understand that mozilla is a browser project second, and a platform first. To develop software based off of mozilla and toys for the mozilla browser we need a finalized API set. Check out mozdev.org to see some of the amazing stuff that is being built right now. Indi office suites, spell checkers, alternative UIs, calculators, etc. It's really hard to develop software such as this when mozilla changes every week.

As for web content. Yes standards are nice, but all browsers have bugs. I'm personally aware of quite a few bugs with mozilla's JS implementation, regardless of the fact that it is awesome. It will be nice to have mozilla at a standard milestone where web developers can put faith into known strengths and weaknesses. Most web developers develop browser specific scripts and work-arounds all the time.

Well, with 1.0 we will finally have a feature set that is standardized. Right now it is kind of hard to develop browser skins, XUL apps, and even web content for a browser that has major changes every week. Now we can finally develop content that can last on this browser.

Moreover, 1.0 will also give way to adoption by 3rd parties and OS vendors. You'll start to see browsers based off of Mozilla 1.0 (ie Netscape 7), and you'll start to see OS vendors such as RedHat switch to Mozilla as the default system browser.

What's really interesting is that since Iceland is so small, run by native people, and self sufficient, the population is a LOT more aware of what happens when you start to pollute. Here in the americas we have a lot of land and the long term affects of pollution are diluted. We have more space to put our cancer causing filth out of site, moreover, we're not as connected to our home as the Icelandic are, we're nothing more then a bunch of immigrants.
