ok guys... I'm go'na start bootleging roller coasters. Anyone want in? We'll build them in Canada, part them up, move them across the boarder, and assemble them within isolated rural communities.

  2. Resident Evil... on Nintendo Drops GameCube Price to $150 · · Score: 2

Get Resident Evil. You'll get houuurs of game play, scared every now and then, and amazingly cool graphics (the realtime models and lighting effects within this game are nothing short of awesome).

You might also want to check out Star Wars Rogue Leader, Tony Hawk 3, 007, Spider Man (goofy camera controls though), and Pikmin.

A lot of folks seem to like Super Smash Bros as well... but that game was a bit too much for me. Too many colors and flashing lights.

  5. Re:Class Action Lawsuit! on Post-it Notes vs. Copy-Inhibited CDs · · Score: 2

As I recall, the Celine Dion CD at hand does not contain the official "CD" logo on the case since it is not really a CD at all. It's a copy protected CD rip-off.

Moreover, I also recall hearing that this "album" and albums like it come printed with a disclaimer that notes that the disk will not be playable in a Mac.

and before you start thinking of going to court... you might want to jab a paper-clip in the to manual eject whole of the CD-ROM. Just about every optical drive has one. One is probably located behind the iMac's front drive "door." You'll have to open the door by hand, which is not hard to do.

But hey, It sure would be nice is phillips would start taking these copy protection companies to court for infringing on the compact disk patents. as I said before, these disks are not CDs (as phillips has openly stated), but they are using a lot of similar technology.

This crap could totally be stopped with legal action if people started organizing and getting creative.

  6. As good as Back to the Future 2 (the book)? on Star Wars Episode II: The Book Review · · Score: 2

I recall reading this fine peice of print (Back to the Future 2) for a book report in grade school. I'm shocked to see that it never made the NY times best seller list.

Hopefully Star Wars Episode 2 will do better. Afterall, we all know books made about movies are typically some of the best reads... And books made about TV shows are usually even better!

I imagine Star Wars Episode 2 (the book) will probably probably inspire a lot of grade school children to put forth that extra effort come book report time. It books like this that really boost comprehension and teach kids the joy of reading.

I think part of this depends on how broad your skills are. Changing careers is very common these days, sticking with one career until the end of time is not. If you've actually spent the time to expand your education (and yourself) to something aside from a few specific thats will get you a good job out of college, then you will have the ability to migrate horizontally and vertically in life. I think it is fairly safe to say that you are less inclined to "burn out" if you are a jack of many trades, as opposed to a master of one.

  13. I once owned a PowerBook G4... but it had to go. on Comparative Laptop Reviews? · · Score: 2

There was point in time when I wanted a PowerBook G4.. and well, I bought one (400mhz). However, I became fairly sick of it after a while.

The Ti case was kind of cool looking, but quite weak . Disite that fact that I treated it like a baby, it aquired a dent, scratches, a missing foot, and a slight curve to the monitor's backing. CD's also seemed to need a bit of help loading after a few month.

I also found the 5400 RPM harddisk and the 16meg Rage 128 to to be quite a let down as well.

No doubt, it was revision "a" machine, and this stuff happens with new toys. However, some of these case and hardware problems still exist in the current batch of PowerBooks. It was nice machine with a TON of features, however I can't seem my self looking at another PowerBook anytime soon. I think I'll stick with my DPG4 box.

Mac users like this guy here make the rest of us look bad :(.

And remember. MacOS X LACKS support for 2D harware acceleration. This is an issue that should not be taken lightly. Until it is resolved OS X's GUI is going to continue to feel slow. Even Chimera resizes and scrolls at a snails pace.

Moreover, I also feel as if Apple has really dissed the profesional design community with many of it new UI choices and totally lack of legitimate usability testing. Using Adobe apps on Windows XP is actully less of a headache then looking at them from within the nightmare which is OS X's UI.

  18. MacOS was designed for a 1 button mouse on Apple's Response to Microsoft: Unix Ads? · · Score: 2

First of all... it's a Trackpad, not a mouse. Second of all, MacOS has always been an OS that was designed for a single button mouse. Windows and *nix users tend to forget this. Apple was the first computer company to ship a mouse GUI for consumers. Macs came with a one button mouse in 1984, and they still do today. Most of the basic GUI features that make a Mac a Mac still exist and therefore still allow a one button mouse to be somewhat practical for many consumers.

One of the main things that sets MacOS apart from most other OSes is the existance of a global menu bar that hovers on the top of the monitor. This menu bar stores many common tasks that most other OSes store in "right-clicked" contextual menus.

No, doubt, I do find contextual menus much faster... and I actully own a 5 button mouse ;). However there is a slew of consumers out there that would rather shoot up to a desktop menubar then have to right-click on desktop icons and whatnot.

All in all, there's actully a ton of variouse GUI features that make single button mousing possible on MacOS and a freek'n pain in the butt on other operating systems. But, hey, if you don't want a one button mouse you don't have to use one. MacOS X fully supports just about any USB mouse you can pick up at compUSA... go get one. Last I checked mice cost about the same as eating at TacoBell (yuck ;)).

  24. Re:OS X rules... on Unix Isn't Dead · · Score: 1

Well, lets put it this way. With Xp you can turn that garbage off. With OS X you can can't unless you slap a third party theme hack on the OS.

Moveover, even with themes turned in in XP they do not affect the whole UI of something such as Photoshop. You may find a blue menu bar, and blue window boarders...but that's about it. everything else is solid grey and much more functional for design work then Aqua.

as for the extra mouse buttons. OS X supports Right-click and scroll wheels out of the box. Any old generic USB mouse will work perfectly in OS X... However Apple chooses not to include a multibutton with new machine due to the fact that MacOS has things such as a desktop menu bar...which windows and many other OSs do not have.
