Where would you put Space Invaders that differentiates it from Quake? They both seem to fall into "Action".

  2. Definitive List on A Definitive List of Gaming Genres? · · Score: 1

There is no definitive list, but I've always liked the way SPOnG does it. Split off point of view and dimensionality and then use a structured list of genres and apply up to three per title.

You can see their genre list on their search page as well as their POV and dimensionality lists.

[correction] "(Universal Media) Disc" not "Universal (Media Disc)" i.e. it's the media that the disc can contain that is universal, not the use of the disc its self.

Doesn't make it much different from any other digital format, but calling it PSP Disc would have sealed its fate much quicker. Micro Blu-Ray has a ring to it, but since they are pushing Blu-Ray as HD and the UMD format is only about 1.8 GB, that's out too.

Or you can pay for it some other way.

The DRM in IMP is aimed at stopping people from outside the UK getting their hands on content funded by UK license payers' money, with out paying anything.

  10. Interesting Tactics on Microsoft Plans Deliberate Xbox 360 Shortage · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is actually quite a good idea from Microsoft.

Hold on, let me explain, put the pitchfork down.

Most consoles have huge date one allocations and sell out. There is then a huge gap while the manufacturer re-supplies, eventually things settle down to normal sales figures and supply can match demand.

If MS limit the number of sales on day one, they can keep units flowing into stores instead of having a slump. You'll keep people coming back and retailers won't have dry periods when they've sold out and are waiting for more stock.

It's a crazy plan, but it might just work.

  15. Wrong approach on DS Game Port Wishlist · · Score: 1

Because that's what a new and innovative piece of gaming hardware needs - tired old ports from other platforms.

What the DS needs are games that set it apart from the rest of the gaming platforms out there, not games that make it look like a portable PC, just because a touch screen can take the place of a mouse.

PST files are another MS "filesystem in a file" format. When a PST file reaches 2GB, Outlook tries to add more data, but the internal file pointer wraps. Two pieces of data with the same pointer value and things go to shit quickly.

These days, Outlook recognises the fact it's done it and tells you. Previously it just happily went around overwriting data.
