That guy seems to be to naive to be from this world.
I dont know ANY unix admin running ANY server for other peoples fun for free.
There are those admins who run their servers for their own fun (unix admins playing whatever system games) and there is the largest portion:
Windows-Only-Users renting cheap servers in the internet and therefore always using unixservers.
This base alone may be responsible for some thousand dedicated serves of Quake, Halflife and many many other systems. Those thousands of thousands servers matter, not the 25 servers set up by unixadmins to join playing with unixclients.
I have seen die-hard-windows-only-users getting into linux very fast if confronted with the choice between an dedicated Halflife-Server running linux for 40/month or paying 200 for an equal windows-system.
Give the thing a nice 5"-display, some keys and a pen and call it a Server-PDA or Storage-PDA. Keep remote-Administration still an option. Now you've got something interesting.
The keyfeature is "a portable large storage with own intelligence". A PDA is nearly the thing needed except it is missing a harddrive.
Trying to avoid display and HID sound like a bad idea to safe $20 by dropping most standalone usability.
Quake3 doesn't have any CD-Check left since Version 1.17.
Quake3 makes the Key-Identification optional since 1.32. Many Servers still insist on Key-Identification as that way you can Key-Bann weird players which I prefere very much - every played BF42 or CS with some Teamkillers online? Well, in Quake3 you just get banned for life after a while.
Quake3 brings Punkbuster which is also completly optional and locks out most if not all widespread cheats.
So there are basically two types of servers: Those running Keycheck and Punkbuster for the semi-pros and those running nothing at all running for all those pirated copies of Quake3.
". It's fast (bunny hopping), instead of holding forward, moving and aiming, you have to keep your speed up as you go, gaining speed off ramps, jumping at the right times to gain even more speed, while trying to launch someone in the air and nail him repeatedly up aganist the wall with rockets and make him land on your grenade, damaging him with combos repeatedly and fast as possible before he does any real damage to you."
Most if not all important QWTF-Players switched to Q3F a long time ago. And most if not all Q3F-Players agree that there is only one thing making Q3F different from QWTF: The Concussion-Jumps were made less powerfull, they are now somewhere between TF2.7 and TF2.9-behaviour.
Watch those movies and be stunned: http://www.ingame.de/filebase/index.php?action=fil e&cid=97&fid=587
The Quality is a shame. Whoever encodet that crime against my eyes should be sentenced stop using videotools for live.
The Videoterrorist used MPeg-Video-Level1 to encode 640x480 at a rate of 130kByte/s - including audio! For Heavens Sake, even using most uptodate codecs like MS-Video9 or H.264 its not possible to achieve anything watchable with that specs.
The Encodingclone used INTERLACED material, but the codecs obviously wasn't aware of that... which makes the video incredible fuzzy. A five year old knows that this sucks.
That Eyeball-Necromant even left a LARGE black border around the video - which is also VERY BAD for quality. While the black compresses very well the border to the real video is the problem, MPeg-Video-Level1 wastes incredible amounts of data on those.
This Eyeball-Knife also is totally darkened, nearly not watchable at all. Even raising the Gamma and Brightness with FFMPEG sucks as there is nearly no contrast left after all those encoding failtures.
My personal oppinion: The Ideas are smart, the realisation is ok too, but that ridiciulus encoding makes it impossible to watch. Stay away, don't waste bandwidth.
I must be too stupid for Bittorrent. After One hour I still was uploading at 9kb/s and downloading at 1-3kb/s with an estimated Downloadtime of 20h. So I went over to fileplanet and start sharing it now by edonkey.
Munich is the biggest hearted city of germany, therefore its nickname "Stadt mit Herz", but not even close to the biggest city in germany which should be the Ruhr-Area or Berlin.
From what I guess the sozies just tried to test how far Microsoft may go. As Microsoft went very far they knew Linux would be a great choice:-)=
Actually Microsofts desperate attempt in avoiding Linux was Microsofts Doom. There is only one thing which might backfire: Microsoft also has a big department in munich with lots of workers, so lets hope they dont pack up and run to some Microsoft-Village next door.
> One is confusion among a less educated (some might > also say intelligent)
I wont jump for your "Mac users are stupid" trollbait, but let me me use my words to describe your theory:
"the average mac user runs in danger downloading sources and binaries from a nearly secret cvs-like structure aside of the official updatemanager without noticing his wrongdoing"
As teenagers we build tasers out of some scrap electronics. I accidentially hit my CBM64 and fried it, some years later it turned out my VIC-Videochip was crisp.
Also I killed a Quantum-LPS240 - I just punched twice my Amiga3000 which got a lose wire at that time and needed this to "wake up" - I didnt hit it hard and the also installed Seagate-ST1239N runs fine until today. You bet that was my last Quantum drive.
95% of all/. wouldnt know a gigatroll when getting bitten by one into their nose.
Gobble is a first class troll: He is insightfull, he steps on hot topics, he is mostly unsympathic and his flaimbaits are mostly close to reality.
What really makes him stand above normal trolls and even megatrolls: some of his posts can only be identified by trained professionals (trained trollbusters or trained technicians, your call). I must admit he could do LOTS of damage to the scene if noticed outside the scene - whatever scene he is trolling at the moment, eg opensource.
At least he is trying to be funny. Or at least I think so (trying to be funny, not succedding:-)
Hey, say whatever you want, but this could be a BIG funthing for the elitehackers:
Why now hax0r the mod-detection-routine and ban ALL xboxlive-accounts?
Hey, it may be THEIR xboxlive-service, but it is still YOUR xbox and who can sue you for using a new ID every day or at least report another one every day?
In the very early 1990 I was using subnet, which was assimilated by usenet meanwhile, with uucp and wazoo.
Even way back then there was vital interest in more efficient filetransfer. uudecode simply sucked. Everybody agreed to this.
But what did happen in the last 12 years?
Nothing.
There are now more powerfull uudecode-implementations, but I havent really seen anything practical invention in the basics.
I totally agree that yEnc is a quickshot with none thinking at all and its weird and so on. But the usenet-gods havent done anything wort mentioning in the last 12 years and they will not do in the next five years. They lost it and are now crying for not getting asked. Sad fate, but graveyards are half full of indispencable people and half full of people who dispenced with them..
IBM offers programs for managing their harddrives. Sorry, no URL, but look out for
IBM Drive Fitness
IBM Feature Tool
Those fine programs can measure the temperatur inside a IBM drive, so you can at least see if you are running at risky temperaturs.
My drives are running with 34-37C while havin a room-temperatur of 20C - you will most likely not be able to get such a low temperatur, I am using a 12cm-220V-fullsteal-ventilation. Be happy if you get below 40C...
its a major difference if the US decides to "filter out" their own NAVSTAR over europe, which would be their best right, because they pay the bill,
or if the US activily disrupts european infrastructur - which would be basically an act of aggression against europe.
True aggression against europe (worlds largest econonomy, half a billion citizens, technolocal mostly equal to the US, a large military, nukes, whatever, name it) is something completely different from pulling the plug from US-NAVSTAR over europe.
I wonder why the US fears an alternate GPS. Only high-tech-powers will depend on GPS, dont think GPS makes any difference in libyia, india or most other regions in the world. GPS is only vital for powers like the EU, US, China, Japan and so on.
And by the way, if the US needs all GPS over one region shut down, they just need to ask and explain. Thats all.
At a local Coder-Party I had the opportunity to show my System around. One of the mainaspects of that party was "no windows", so a lot of Macfreaks, Amigafreaks and Unixfreaks showed up. My System was a SuSE7.3, Thunderbird-800, 512MB-PC133, Geforce1-DDR, I didnt put too much effort into personalizing it, because I got SuSE7.3 only some days earlier.
And guess what...
The Macfreaks said "its basically the same but comes with more software bundled" and got red heads when I told em what I paid for this old junkyard.
the Amigafreaks where puzzled by the fact that they found nothing my system couldnt do better than an Amiga,
the BSD-Freaks still thought "X is a way to display several Shells at once, twm is enough for anyone" but had to recognise that SuSE7.3 looks damned sexy, but maybe it was just my Fay Valentine wallpaper:-)
and several of the Debian- and RedHat-Crowd quickly changed to KDE.

Get it and forget about DivX...

Only the paranoid survives
Most of my systems parts come from europe (germany, hungary) and Taiwan, maybe also a little bit from china.
I cant think of even one piece of equipment coming from the states.

How do they expect to watch this?
There is no Quirktime and no Windoze Media for my system available and this is not going to change.
But there is Realplayer available and DivX and MPEG, the later two even work on my PDA.

Usenet is not Internet.
Usenet works without IP.
Usenet can be used with a C64, a 1981 IBM-PC, a Amiga500 and everything else.
Usenet needs its own way of distributing data.
I always share /dev/zero, that does the job. If they still insist on "share more" then I also share /dev/random. :-)
