One way to put the announce, IMHO, could be to put also links to how people can install the kernels, why they should do with, etc... And do the same when posting news about a new version of other projects.
Yes, it's a very fundamental thing as a community to have on Slashdot a discussion of some of the most important developments of the LINUX/GNU world. Like the Kernel but also about Mozilla, X, Xmms, Emacs, GCC.
It's the first place I look to see the news and I really want continue to see that here.
That was a demonstration of what you can get, even if you don't agree with the final decision, when all the facts and positions are presented.
The fact is, I think MS will be very much pressured to deliver a good service or get all the bads. I don't think that they are able to do that now. But will they be? Sure if enough pressure is put on then by concurrent processes.
Normal ordinary people don't know the full implication of what they are doing when given their data do Passport, namely Credit Card number, Bannk Accounts acess, etc. If Microsoft will be getting this data then they should be treated like a Bank and be accounted with the same responsabilities and ethics. Microsft should be full aware of the consequences of a bad implementation of XP/Passport technologie, like banks are full aware of rogue individuals having access to sensitive data.
A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped inches from a shop window. For a second, everything was quiet in the cab, then the driver said, "Look mate, don't ever do that again. You scared the living daylights out of me!" The passenger apologized and said, "I didn't realize that a little tap would scare you so much." The driver replied, "Sorry, it's not
really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver I've been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years."
Hei, people loke to do different thinks, I like to see old movies, you maybe like to see black-and-white movies. Diversity is nice. If they enjoy what they are doing, great. Maybe Konqueror will be better than Mozilla, maybe not. Maybe they grow together. Be happy!!
But they sure will sell the know-how, experience, etc. And there yuo will find the real money. Probably what they are selling is this, the experience, not only a box.
This really seems to be similar to what people think is the MS business model. Buggy software to the masses, they will find the bugs, then sell them a little improved version, wait for more bugs, sell again,... And do a lot of cash in the mean time. And build a reputation of constantly improve your software.
It's amazing! it's incredible! Theirs stoxk is rainsing like a rocket!

A Stock Exchange to be able to run fast and with good time quality is not dependent so much on the operating system type. As far as I know, you have big stock exchanges qorking with clusters of Compaq o.s., IBM o.s and others proprietary o.s. only by historical reasons. Linux has proven in others places that it is able to give a good quality of service woth a lot of stress and big loads of traffic. So you should be able to have Linux as the main o.s. on a Stock Exchange, with very low costs ( don't pay the leass of the o.s). And with a good team of technicians great control of what the o.s realy does and realy don't need to do.
I think they only are using Compaq, IBM and MS nowadays.
Not the firsr Sotock MArker of the world with Linu

You forgot this:
"Don't use it, wait for a stable one"
They would work like the Microsoft Car.:-)
The judicial system is independent of the legislative. So if given enough info and different views I'm most optimist that things will not be so dark.

And Mozilla is only a tiny little project on a BIG BIG Corporation. It was only little figures, $, for them.
She was been paid, it wasn't a free project for her.
She probably will try to find out someone who will pay the same for the same work. She didn't worked for free.
She worked on a free project but not for free.
