"The League" is different from the older "Blitz" series; it focuses on the shady, scandal-ridden side of the football world, as much off the field as on it. It revels in injuries and late hits, even showing close-ups of bones breaking, and lets you "juice up" when the pain becomes too much to bear. It's a surprisingly brutal game.

Hot Coffee is tame compared to normal game play in Playboy The Mansion.
That's my point. Hot Coffee, rightly or wrongly, was enough to warrant an AO rating. If the ESRB could go back in time I doubt Playboy: The Mansion (or, say, Leisure Suit Larry: MCL) would have earned anything less.

Pretty much as a society it has been decided that calling black people niggers and "nappy haired ho's" is not acceptable in any venue. You do it once and get fired from your job. You do not find virtual worlds where people get to practice calling black people niggers. Creating such a virtual place would result in a large outcry and banning such a thing.
Guess they should shut down Xbox Live then.

Well...isn't that what they hire professional writers for?

I've always thought that writing in games has been lagging behind the technology. There was kind of a golden age for a while there with the interactive fiction and whatnot, but things have declined lately. Bring in a pro, make that stuff sparkle. Don't leave it as an afterthought. Humor requires an especially deft hand.

And people wonder why there are so few genuinely funny games out there?

If you're waiting for a fighting game with proper physics, the Virtua Fighter series will definitely not be it. The game's far too balanced at this point to worry about the randomness that can come with true physics. Many players plan their strategies through knowing exactly how far a certain move will stagger/stun/juggle a player, every time. I agree that those high-flying juggles are rather ridiculous, but by now it's part of the game, like it or not.

Of course, I'm not saying a fighter with real physics wouldn't be great fun, just that you'd have to build it from the ground up. You couldn't just tack something like that on and expect people to run with it.

That's actually an good question, but I'd say no. You weren't tasked to play Oregon Trail because of its inherent "gameness," it's because it depicted a true event/time/place that you were studying anyway. Your teacher could have had you watch a video about the Oregon Trail, and for a lot of students that probably would have been enough to learn what it was all about, but he/she probably thought a game would be more engaging (and it was for me; I loved Oregon Trail). But as far as cultural worth from pure game mechanics...I doubt Oregon Trail would be remembered today if it had been about travelling across an alien planet (though that does sound interesting).
