This statement will soon become true for anti-virus.
It is pretty much true for defrag. M$ includes a crippled version of diskkeeper to allow competitors a tiny amount of breathing room. Not much room as most users don't see any value except for servers to pay for a defrag program.
M$ has stated that their products will always be moving targets. If they stand still, then their competition can clone them and they will become irrelevant. M$ biggest fear is standing still. Ironically, this fear causes them to plan ever greater giant leaps forward that take more time to deliver for each leap. Longhorn, Whidbey, Yukon will be the end of the line. Nobody is waiting 10 years for the next version of anything. Think of the time frames of windows 1, 2, 3, 3.1, 3.1, NT 3.0, NT 3.5, NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Longhorn and hellfreezesover. SQL server 6.5, SQL Server 7.0, SQL server 2000, Yukon and hellfreezesover.
M$ will become a content, drm, media company in the long run. The programmers will get run off by suits that figure out the cost of building ever newer platforms is much higher than building new content delivery channels.
We would not want to spread software piracy via official NASA government vehicles. Perhaps they should immediately subpeona and inspect all code used on all space vehicles. NASA may have to launch a mission to Voyager to patch the system. We would not want alien civilizations to get the wrong impression of us.
Anyone who get their cert in change your life in a week for $10,000 school has only proved that they can memorize answers to questions.
The value of a cert to me is that the holder should have learned more than how to click install/next/next/next/.... A real cert (not Microsoft Cleaning Person Front Page Windows washer) indicates that the individual has made a commitment to mastering a technology and/or environment. This commitment may be superficial, since I have met stupid unmotivated lawyers. It seems to me that there are a lot of people working in the industry as DBAs, programmers whose SQL skills, for example, are limited to days 1-7 of learn SQL in 21 days. These are the people with the 36 hour daily posting processes in production. The value of the advanced cert to me is an indicator that the individual has made a significant personal effort to train themselves. The cert does not so much indicate real world skills in less experienced people as an attitude towards learning.
Until we find a way to learn about new products/brands that does not require broadcasting we will have spam. The difference between the superbowl commercials and my email inbox is only a media choice by the product marketers. Email adds to television, dvd, vhs, print, telephone, billboard, bumper stickers, magnetic car sign, window sticker, bandit sign and fax channels. The limitations being imposed on broadcast by telephone are spilling over into increased fax and email advertising. The spam problem goes away if you only accept email from sources who are in your contacts. Perhaps a chicken and egg problem in some cases. I do not have the same control over other media.
Aside: If drinking beer makes the farting horse funny, then I will never drink another beer.
In the toll fres space, there has been intense competition for memorable/easily spelled numbers. 1-800-flowers is one example. The misspelled domain squater issue is also present as competitors to 1-800-flowers bought numbers with one digit different to ride on the free advertising of the base number.
Unlike the current anti-theft technology where bulky visible tags are easy to spot and remove, the RFID tag can be a permanent invisible part of each product. The next time you wear any RFID tagged clothing back to the same store/chain, they can greet you ala minority report, aggregate your purchase history, sell such history to others. When you purchase items with your credit card, then you provide additional information useful to many people. The police could find you with scanners in public places such as airports by retreiving your purchase records from stores by determining where you bought your clothes from your bank transactions. We do not need a national id card when every retailer is going to tag the population for the government at no cost to the government. RFID scanners are much less obtrusive than the video cameras with face recognition. Add RFID tags to currency to prevent counterfeiting and trace illegal transactions. Am I being too paranoid?
To quote my less technically literate neighbor "What's email if you can't click on things!" His son routinely rebuilds his computer which is on a cable modem. No amount of O/S security will overcome user stupidity. This man is not ignorant of viruses. Just that viruses these days are little more subtle than the old format c: variety. I will bet that every one of the computers infected with mydork are also running every spyware and adware program in existence. This is why people need to upgrade, their old computer just grinds to a halt with self-inflicted infections.
Same difference.E.g. three 8 bit images take the same bandwidth as one 24 bit color image. Additionally, they may only want a b&w image in ultraviolet or infrared. This case would only take 1/3 the bandwidth. The link speed is on the order of 10 to 1000 bits per second except thru the mars orbiters. Maximum information for bandwitdh is optimized, not pretty tourist pictures with a limited drugstore camera.
How about releasing a Thai language only version. I only know one person who could use a Thai version in the us.
MS could produce a version of XP that only supported languages of emerging markets.
We should begin to designate all sites of landers and moon landings as historical sites. No entry within some distance. Otherwise some kid will stomp man's first footprints on the moon out of existence. All the landers on mars will be recycled into local products for the first colonists. History is now and for the future.
Blue of course! The night sky is the same color as the day. Just not as bright and we see it as black (At least if you're not in a city). The sky on mars will not be blue. The atomsphere is much less dense than earth so the scattering of light will be much less. The Martian atmosphere contains more dust and much less water than earth. When I look at the ground portion of the images, the ground and rocks are colored appropriately. The groud greatly resemble many places in the southwest, with the exception of the total lack of plant life. SOme images of the sahara desert would be indistinguishable except for the overall color due to the different minerals and sky color.
My organization has grown from 5 to 25 programmers in the past two years. However, the last 20 hires are in Shanghai at $800US/mo. When computer jobs expand overseas there is no real benefit for professionals in the USA.
Little endian vs big endian has nothing to do with Gulliver's travels.
In a computer architecture the bits of a binary number can be read right to left or left to right. Understand that left to right is an extremely abstract (and culturally dependent) concept related to viewing increasing memory addresses being read from right to left. For example 123 one hundred twenty three in big endian and three hundred twenty one in little endian. This term came from which part of the binary number is on the left, either the most significant (big) or the least significant digit (little). Intel is the prime example of a little endian architecture. Most other computer manufacturers did use big endian including the internet.
China's self sufficient economy exists because most of the chinese population make their living as subsistence farmers.
Replace all your hordes of workers with a handful of lawyers. Pay them % of the profits. Sue anyone listed in the phone book. (pat pend.)
Title says it all ;)
the machine catches fire
Now there is a remote exploit that will catch everyone's attention. ;-)
but not a small fraction of M$ income. Why give away your cash cow. Sell the dead horse instead.

Upgrade to windows xp so you are completely dependent upon poking the screen with a mouse.
