Not ironic at all. First of all, American citizens are almost unique in that we are subject to double taxation, first by our host governments and then by the U.S. government. Other countries don't pull this shit.
Second, where's the "he wants to pay taxes now" thing? Where was that? I must have missed it in the article.
Third, since when is your status with the IRS any sort of grounds for being refused help from your own government? When did this happen?
Do you realize that these Apple architectural decisions were made by Ph.D.s with more education than you, and they have already thought more about maps than you ever will in your life? Are you a cartographer? What's your Ph.D. in?
"Bar floozies"? How in the name of all that is holy did these misogynist shaming words get moderated up to +5? They were not "bar floozies", they were respected Swedish feminists.
Bzzt wrong. I live in an area (China) that Google has decided to disallow everyone from buying from their market. It's simply not available. When I click the in-app "upgrade now" button, I get taken to a "Not available in your country" screen in Google Play. Paid apps simply don't show up in search. I thought I would be clever and install a VPN on my phone and try it that way - nope. Google checks your SIM card. China Unicom? Nope, can't buy anything. This is by design.
An interesting question: what if Global Warming, as a scientific phenomenon, required the entire world to adopt right-wing solutions to problems? How would the science be different, then?
Just kind of funny that because Global Warming requires us to adopt many far-left solutions, many long left in the wings due to lack of any sort of evidence that they actually work in the real world, that suddenly human nature changes and becomes incorruptible when faced with any other option.
We all know the typical way of presenting news - whenever an (R) does something bad, the party affiliation is right up there, and whenever a (D) does something even more despicable, the party affiliation is omitted and both parties are said to be equally bad. We all know this already. What's interesting about this story is how Blackburn is conspicuously identified an an (R) while Khanna's party affiliation is left blank - even though Khanna is a Republican through and through. An ignorant or negligent observer might conclude that (R) are uniquely and despicably evil while (D) never seem to be attached to anything bad.
Funny, even back in the good old days journalists were exactly the way you criticize them for being today...I think that's called "false nostalgia" or something.
The sooner the Americans come, the better...One hundred million die proudly.
-- Japanese slogan in the summer of 1945.
Japan was finished as a warmaking nation, in spite of its four million men still under arms. But...Japan was not going to quit. Despite the fact that she was militarily finished, Japan's leaders were going to fight right on. To not lose "face" was more important than hundreds and hundreds of thousands of lives. And the people concurred, in silence, without protest. To continue was no longer a question of Japanese military thinking, it was an aspect of Japanese culture and psychology.
-- James Jones, WWII
We will prepare 10,000 planes to meet the landing of the enemy. We will mobilize every aircraft possible, both training and "special attack" (kamikaze) planes. We will smash one third of the enemy's war potential with this air force at sea. Another third will also be smashed at sea by our warships, human torpedoes and other special weapons. Furthermore, when the enemy actually lands, if we are ready to sacrifice a million men we will be able to inflict an equal number of casualties upon them. If the enemy loses a million men, then the public opinion in America will become inclined towards peace, and Japan will be able to gain peace with comparatively advantageous conditions.
-- Imperial General HQ army staff officer in July 1945, from Weintraub's "The Last Great Victory"
"We hated the Japs but nobody had the slightest desire to go there and fight them because the one thing we knew was that we'd all be killed. I mean we really knew it. I never used to think that, I used to say the Japs would never get me. But there was no question about the mainland. How the hell are you going to storm a country where women and children, everybody would be fighting you? Of course we'd have won eventually but I don't think anybody who hasn't actually seen the Japanese fight can have any idea of what it would have cost."
-- Austin Aria, veteran of the Okinawa campaign
The middle class, otherwise known as the bourgeois, has been a class enemy for decades. How's it bad they're being wiped out and forced to join the working class?
Opera had tabbed browsing in 2000. I remember because that's why I switched, opening multiple tabs at modem speeds was awesome. Read what you've got on the screen, and by the time you finish, all your other tabs have finished loading. Firefox? Bullshit.
You know, I would listen to opinions like yours more often if you did not use slurs. Fat acceptance is real, we need to stop using size as a shaming word for those who are different from us.
Industrial espionage is one thing. This is a government employee entering your hotel room to install software on your laptop and image your hard drive. It has been happening for years in China (but has just now made Slashdot). It is practically a signature move of theirs.
Do you REALLY not understand, or is this one of those play-acting things where someone pretends not to understand to "show how ridiculous society is". Showing up in a suit says, in our ridiculous society's unspoken language, "I'm serious about this job and I'm willing to conform to your expectations." It's just something that's expected to get any decent job, much like a college degree. Guess what: every society has its unspoken rituals and if you don't conform to them you won't be accepted as a member of that society.
If you're one of those "oh, that's such bullshit, I would never do that to get a job" then congratulations for having such remarkable skills that you can shrug off job offers. It may be news to you that the rest of us don't enjoy such luxuries. But then again, you're the only one who sees the societal dysfunction at play, so I'm guessing you're not really used to thinking outside yourself.
Well, this one is pretty obvious. I'm seeing it in the job I took a month ago. Instead of giving users what they want, the website is deciding what it wants to show. That's backwards. It's good to see they went out of business, but how many people got negative performance reviews and lost raises and bonuses because they had been given an impossible mandate from the top?
Abstractions are the primary reason my four GIGAHERTZ computer with four GIGABYTES of RAM is less responsive than my 450MHz computer in 1998. All the performance gains are immediately devoured to make life easier for developers with no benefit to users.
That's because there is no foreigner on the ground in China checking quality. This is a common greenhorn mistake made by people who have no idea what they're doing sourcing from China, and who think it's too expensive to pay airfare, hotel, and salary for one of their staff to go over. You're going to get defective products, either because the factory is actively cheating you, doesn't understand your requirements, or just doesn't care. Chinese factories will do good work but they need supervision. If there WAS a foreigner on the ground, then he needs to be fired for incompetence.
I came here to say this. Why wouldn't the bread get stale all the same? Staleness isn't caused by mold at all. The starch in bread degelatinizes and crystallizes over time, causing the hard texture.

You know, I do a lot reading of 20th century history, and this comment would not be out of place in Bavaria 1936.
I. Cannot. Buy. An. Android. App. Even. If. I. Wanted. To.
So let's STFU about cheapness, eh?

Funny you should use the example of Woodward and Bernstein, as they were handed a journalistic "scoop", in which a whistle-blower handed the story to the likes of the Washington Post with a bow on it.
Funny, even back in the good old days journalists were exactly the way you criticize them for being today...I think that's called "false nostalgia" or something.
Point of fact, it was not 'hacking' the phone network, it was 'phreaking' the phone network.

Komatsu (full name Kabushiki-gaisha Komatsu Seisakusho) is Japanese. Caterpillar is neither environmentally nor socially responsible. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

It must be nice, being able to possess such luxuries and privileges. It's not like that for the lower 99% of us. Fuck off, 1%-er.
Sorry? What do we call Major Hassan, then? Oh, right...bog-standard workplace violence. I mean, the fact he was shouting "Allah Ackbar" is irrelevant.
On July 4th, 2002, a man shot up the El Al counter at LAX. There are more. 100% effective my ass.

Actually that works quite well when customers have no choice.

It was a nefarious plot. According to treaty, products are labeled with the COUNTRY of manufacture, not the city. Nice try, though.
