The answer is the designers who create such things need to constantly create. Even if there's nothing wrong with the product and the users love it. Where are they going to get their next job from? They need to point to a design they just finished. Who is asking for it? A better question is why do the cruel users wish to oppress the designers with their lack of taste? Why aren't they demanding new and exciting products? Designers need to drag people kicking and screaming to "better" products, otherwise the designers are in real danger of the disdain of their peers and unemployment.
Boy, mass immigration sure put a stop to that, didn't it? Imagine, the deplorables benefiting from The System? The 60s and 70s sure were fucked up, weren't they?
Skyjackers are why we have airline security checks. Before that people just drove to the airport and got on airplanes. Airliners used to get hijacked *all the time* back then. There was a Monty Python bit where a man hijacks a bus and orders it to take him to Cuba, for example. But it's gone down the memory hole today, as you point out. There were also a bunch of left wing terrorist groups that bombed buildings and planted bombs on airliners and there been completely forgotten as well.
What world do you live in where people hate law enforcement? The one where Black Lives Matter inspired a man to murder five Dallas police officers? That's a world of hate for sure.
This ridiculous anti government attitude is what is killing us. We need more government, not less. Less government just leaves a power vacuum. Leave your Ayn Rand stupidity behind and move into the 21st century.
Way to treat fellow Americans as The Other. How much did Putin pay you for this post? If you didn't get paid, you're a sucker to do it for free. The Russians pay good money for people to spread divisive propaganda that sets Americans at each others' throats as you have done.
Bad for the people? You mean the deplorables? Bad for Wikileaks? You mean the Russian controlled enemy intelligence operation? I don't understand what you're arguing for. Are you a fascist? If not, your positions are indistinguishable from the positions that real live fascists hold.
So America's imperial march through southeast Asia was OK. Huh. How many died in Vietnam? In Laos? In Cambodia? Now how many has China killed? What, nobody? What kind of imperial march doesn't kill anyone?
Whataboutism is a propaganda technique first used by the Soviet Union, in its dealings with the Western world.[1] When Cold War criticisms were levelled at the Soviet Union, the response would be "What about..." followed by the naming of an event in the Western world.[2][3] It represents a case of tu quoque (appeal to hypocrisy),[4] a logical fallacy that attempts to discredit the opponent's position by asserting the opponent's failure to act consistently in accordance with that position, without directly refuting or disproving the opponent's initial argument.
Yes, I get that. Let's say they know every packet on my phone and every keystroke. What can the Chinese government DO with that? How would they use it against me? It seems to me that they're not interested in me at all. They're only doing this free VPN stuff to entrap their own people who are trying to leap the Great Firewall.
It's not jealousy, it's resentment that the educated people have used their advantage to ruthlessly destroy the working class. Our elites don't just look down on the rural working class. They look down on urban working class and poor people as well. The term "ghetto" doesn't exactly describe small-town America.
It's doubly offensive because, first of all, there's not a damn thing wrong with being a worker who lives in a trailer. I mean for chrissake, do we need to have the French Revolution all over again? Are people actually proud of being economic parasites who live off the sweat of others? And second of all, what kind of bigotry is it that can't get past a southern accent to appreciate someone's character and intellect and actual accomplishments? Weren't we supposed to be past all that superficial crap?
You failed to address the question so I'll repeat it: " Let's say for some bizarre reason the Chinese government wanted to trick me into installing a free VPN and then somehow use it against me. What form could that possibly take?"
A lot of people use the word "liberal" when they really mean "leftist". There's a big difference. Liberals believe in free speech. They might disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it. http://liberalismunrelinquished.net
Speech that offends campus activists is actually violence, and we've seen activists use actual violence to stop it - and to defend this as self-defense - when administrators fail to do so. http://www.dailycal.org/2017/02/07/violence-self-defense/
In America, a lot of people are really righteously angry at elites, and with good reason. They led us into the Iraq war, which destroyed whatever good reputation we had built up after Vietnam. They came up with NAFTA, which devastated our working class. These elites knew exactly what they were doing, knew how harmful it was, and did it anyway. The backlash created a lot of very angry people who responded the only way they could: by voting against the elites' approved candidate: Hillary Clinton.
America doesn't have a representative government. It doesn't matter what we want, but it does matter very much matter what our elites want. Take an idea that literally nobody supports, and it has about a 30% chance of becoming law. Now, take an incredibly popular idea, one that literally everyone supports. Same 30% chance.
Elites, when they want something, the government is twice as likely to do it: 61% chance. But when they don't want something, it has a *zero percent chance* of happening. No matter how much the rest of America wants it. They block us without thinking about it.
How about Oliver Stone? There's a man whose art is taken seriously by the intelligentsia. Heck, look at what our own politicians think:
"These days, the American dream is more apt to be realized in South America, in places such as Ecuador, VENEZUELA and Argentina, where incomes are actually more equal today than they are in the land of Horatio Alger. Who's the banana republic now?"
-- Bernie Sanders
This is socialism, it has lead to ruin and misery in many states before. At some point when its failed economic policies start leading to starvation, the people start revolting and it inevitably starts demanding more authoritarian power to maintain its control. You know, like is happening in this very story we're discussing.
I'm curious: how are they going to screw me, exactly? Let's say for some bizarre reason the Chinese government wanted to trick me into installing a free VPN and then somehow use it against me. What form could that possibly take?
From where I'm sitting, I have far more to fear from my own government than the Chinese. The only reason they even set up these free VPNs is to keep track of their own people who use VPNs to vault the Great Firewall. As long as I'm not involved in attempting to overthrow the Communist Party, how would they even be interested in me? Heck, I can go years between even doing anything remotely relating to China or its government. I write snarky comments once in a while, but the CPC doesn't give a shit about anything anyone writes in English.
On the other hand, the US intelligence community regards the American people as the enemy. Why else do they spend such tremendous efforts to spy on us?
Do you have any proof of such corruption? What do we call people who assert without proof?
Why would we want to give such a prize to one of the deplorables?
"This guy is evil, therefor his claims are wrong." works just fine when it's Donald Trump. Why's it a logical fallacy again?

Colonialist? Wait, what?
COuld you reproduce your comments here so we could all read them? I've got a sneaking suspicion you're a weird political extremist.
Because the managers need to make their jobs last as long as possible.
Fewer choices, not less. Nice for you to learn something today.
Whataboutism.

So discrimination on basis of gender is wrong, and we're going to prove this by discriminating on basis of gender.

Because as nobody else has stealth aircraft, the Americans can't detect them either. Do try to think before you post.

Leftists will happily censor you and will engage in violence should you persist in speaking. See Lisa Feldman Barrett, a psychology professor who wrote in the New York Times defending the idea of speech as violence.

This is democratic socialism, as much as Slashdot refuses to accept it. The Venezuelan government was democratically elected by the people to seize the means of production and ration out the benefits. The United Socialist Party of Venezuela instituted democratic socialism built on the socialist policies of Hugo Chavez. It was failing long before the oil prices fell, there were chronic food shortages back in 2013 when the oil was close to a $100.
