If this person would re-run this test with the latest Abiword and Gnumeric beta releases (which by the way are releasing the stable versions of both in 3 days), they would see that both applications have as good or better MS Office file compatibility as compared to Star and Open Office. I haven't touched Microsoft Word nor OO in over a year and have been able to open, modify and save all Microsoft Word files sent to me (and this was running with the development versions of Abiword!). Check it out...if not for anything else than the fact that Abiword is a lightning fast application.
Sounds all nice and fuzzy in theory, but in practice - this would create a legal nightmare. In the current status of our country where everyone sues everyone for the slightest thing done wrong to them - this would create all kinds of lawsuits in software and then it'd be a matter of weeks before the U.S. Supreme Court started coming up with many laws restricting software. I would predict that software would then become a political party thing that would divide instead of bring together. For instance, it'd be the Democrats who'd support regulation since it'd "help the working people out." The Republicans and every other sane party would say down with regulation because it encroaches on our Constitutional freedoms. Anyone who's willing to compromise on this either doesn't care about their freedom, is being paid off by someone, or hasn't thought through the issue fully or logically.
Red Hat did not make a mistake. SCO has been spreading FUD about Linux and Red Hat's primary product is Linux - therefore Red Hat is only making sure that SCO just can't sit back and call names and raise a fuss without actually having substantial claims. Red Hat is calling SCO's bluff - just a simple hand of poker here.
I 100% agree with you. Compile-time is not an issue with Gentoo. The only time investment is on install but like was discussed on this thread - it's a non-issue since it's a total learning experience. One of the things I like the most about Gentoo is how (for the most part) the software that is installed is the default version straight from the open source projects and not customized by a distribution vendor to work with this GUI and that other CLI program. When I need to know how something works about a program, I can still completely use the actual documentation for that program and know that it's the same thing. That is a big help.
I would take a look at the way you use Gentoo again. This is exactly what Portage is not. If you take a look at the USE flags for each package you want installed, you can see what it will be compiled with and what it will not. And if you do an emerge -p you will see the list of dependencies that it needs based on your current USE flags. Please learn how to use it properly and then you can critique it.
Yes, I have had exactly the same experience. I am a better Linux user and in general a more knowledgable computer user in general as a result of using Gentoo Linux.
Why are you so angry sounding. Can't you leave the name calling for the people still in grade school? My gosh, the guy just had a concern and you could just reply back with your information and leave the anger out...what has he ever done to you?
This is absolutely unbelievable. Yes this is America and yes you can say whatever you want...but come on SCO...show some real evidence and stop pouting and bringing other people's successes down with your miserable company.
Have you heard that Gnome is open source!? Anybody can make anything for the project and submit a patch. You automatically think that this was the core team of developers (you might not have said that directly but your remark was sure pointing that way). Please think before you direct such a "witty" comment towards Gnome.
Wow, that's really cool. From which car companies are these processors in engine controllers? My dad used to work on the Tahoe, Suburban and Hummer diesel engine controllers at Delphi Automotive Systems. But I know they weren't using Linux...they were using 80k bytes of assembler up until now. Now they use C because size just doesn't matter a whole lot anymore.
Amen to that...choice and diversity is always a good thing. Letting the masses choose is what it's all about. And watching Linux on the desktop get better each day along with OS X is nothing short of amazing. To the death shall we fight Windows!:)

Simply amazing, I love it. Can't wait until I can afford to buy a Mac (after the college bills stop happening).
Good one, isolated cases without proof. Not mentioning the number of fantastic things that Bush has done. It's always about "what do I get from the current president?" The man brought much needed integrity back to the presidential position. He is a strong leader in the time of terrorism, war and uncertain economies brought about by Bill Clinton. What more do you want? Nobody's perfect nor sees things your way all of the time. Give the guy a break.
You really need to get your "facts" straight. I won't even mention the numerous areas in which you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I find it hard to believe that you worked for a fortune 500 company in such a role as you say. This sounds more like a troll post than a factual insightful explanation of real experience. Nice try, if you came out and said you were paid by Microsoft to say this stuff, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

It really doesn't matter what version you're using. You could use the 1.2 release CD to install initially and once you run "emerge rsync," you're up to the latest and greatest anyway (besides the initial hardware detection done by the installer).
MySQL is an extremely fast database engine. With the latest 4.0 release of the database, I'd put it up past SQL Server. I use both, SQL Server (latest version) at work and MySQL at home and I'd prefer MySQL over SQL Server any day just alone by the fact that I don't have to have a Windows box to run it.
I just thank God that I use and prefer web browsers like Mozilla that will disable unrequested pop-up windows if I choose. Still, this is a new low for ads and these will be the ultimate in making end users mad beyond belief.
I've got a brand new Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC running the latest version of Microsoft's WinCE (really called Pocket PC now, at least for this type of handheld). For normal use (non-network stuff) it works great and rarely if ever crashes or messes up. But insert any type of network (wireless) card, and I have to soft reboot the thing just about ever time I use the device. The networking layer in Pocket PC 2002 sucks a lot...it has huge PPTP compatibility issues (if you don't use WEP on your wireless network). Also, Pocket Internet Explorer is a big piece of garbage. It was so useless that I actually opted to pay $20 for the amazing pocket browser called NetFront3. If a pocket version of Windows can match the functionality (the good, not the bad) of Pocket PC 2002, I won't even hesitate to switch over to it. I cringe at the day that WinCE devices take over. But if you can handle rebooting everytime to use the wireless network, then I say it's pretty neat. I really enjoy having streaming shoutcast music from anywhere in my house or my yard or my university. Like I said, the only thing missing is getting some big bugs out and stability/consistency.
Well I don't choose the God vs. time being infinite route because God is easier to believe in. I choose it because I have experienced God myself which is not open to scientific scrutiny. I also believe in God because of the history of the man Jesus. It is not disputed that he actually lived. Yeah, certain religions may say he never existed but most do and most modern scholars won't deny that he really existed. You'd probably dispute the history of Jesus saying the Biblical stories of Jesus are not accurate and paint a false picture of him. But I've done the studying, I've read the books, I've done the debates...most of the extra-Biblical history of Jesus is highly speculative and very inconsistent with other written history of Jesus. That is why Jesus is the rock that is available to hold onto and know he will not waver. How is it hard to believe in a God when God became man and lived among us? It is much harder to believe that a purely random, completely unintelligent force such as time is the "god" of the universe than a perfect, almighty, all-knowing God. Yeah, if there wasn't evidence that God exists and Jesus never lived on Earth I'd probably agree with you. But look at the facts, they all point back to God. Just as you look at the world and see the order and intelligence around you as arrising from random mutations due to infinite time, I see it as order and intelligence coming straight in the style of a great and almighty God. But I won't convince you of that, only a real experience from the one God will convince you otherwise.
That's fantastic that you are finding success now. I would like to hear your story personally. Could you send me an email maybe and we can establish communication via email? I can give you some more details about myself if you want to email.
I agree with you in terms of the slashdot community. Very hypocritical indeed. However I would disagree about this method being fundamentally flawed in that the idea is that sin, and I mean any sin, is terrible in the sight of God. God judges all sin as equal in the end according to Christianity. But different sin affects people on different levels and pornography has been shown to have a very negative effect on a person's mind and general demeanor. So the idea is to get rid of this sin in any fashion possible. The idea of this particular way is to get rid of it with the help of a trusted friend or family member which in time will form a new habit. And then hopefully there comes a point in time when self control is possible by this person who once struggled with a pornography addiction. If tempted in the future to view some explicit material, that person would be able and willing to listen to God in this decision and choose to not look at this material. To say that someone could get over this addiction by themself is not realistic. The fact that most people keep this problem hidden from other people is the source of many many problems. Internet pornography is the worst thing to happen to this world in a long long time. And sadly enough, it makes up the majority of all websites on the entire Internet. That's my $0.02 though, not meaning to bash you comment though. I just seem to be coming at it from a little bit of a different angle.
Yes, some religious people and some religious organizations like churches, homeless shelters, etc... are like what you describe. But you forget that they are still people. When one believes in God (in Christianity at least), they do not become like God being incapable of doing something evil. Christianity teaches that they will know what choice is wrong and what choice is right. And I've found that to be true for myself all of the time. But Christians can still choose to sin and every last one of them does for the rest of their lives.
The majority of churches do not pressure people into anything. It's all about free will. They obviously do make suggestions of what is right and wrong. Try visiting some different churches some time with an open mind (not saying you don't have an open mind, just suggesting that you try with an open mind again). And some of the most educated people go to church. I myself plan on getting a pHD someday and I attend church. I think for myself, act on my own and thoroughly enjoy my church on Sundays and volunteering during the week.
