  1. Re:Why do you want a degree so much? on On Balancing Career & College... · · Score: 1

    Amen to that.

I started attending university simply because it was the expected thing to do in my family. There wasn't even a question.

But when I got there, I realized--beyond career, diploma, and the like--that I just loved learning! The world is a vast, complex place and you'll find a passionate professor for nearly every subject.

Of course, this is the idealistic view. There are bitter, burnt out people in academia too. But it is one place where you can find people who are entralled, absolutely captivated by a subject. Their enthusiasm can be contagious to the bright students.

Anyway, the point is that I agree. There's more to life than 401K's and paying off one's mortgage. Learning is exciting, and it's too bad that pre-college education, traditional child rearing, and the "work ethic" in America and elsewhere can crush the daylights out of any curiousity children begin with.

  19. Some (possibly) new tips on How Effective are Ergonomic Keyboards? · · Score: 1

This is one of those recurring topics, like "Should I go to college or get experience?" Well, here are my suggestions; some may be new.

SWITCH MICE HANDS. Spread the wear and tear. I use the mouse right-handed at work, and left-handed at home.

NO COLD HANDS. Wash your hands with warm water, use fingerless gloves, etc. if you're forced to work in a cold office.

GEL KEYBOARD WRIST REST. Not only do they just plain feel good, they will also keep your wrists straight and prevent you from resting your wrists on a hard surface.

TAKE BREAKS. And I don't just mean the occasional water cooler break. Take whole days off with no computer usage. Note that, depending on the damage, it may take several whole days.

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS. Use them whenever you can. Even Windows has a surprising amount of shortcuts; you just have to search the web a bit. Example: ALT+SPACE+X to maximize a window.

STRESS REDUCTION. Working at the computer when you're stressed will do lots more damage because your upper body is tense. So exercise, meditate, escape into novels or movies, or whatever helps you kill tension.

But it also has to do with scarcity. Sure, for movies that play in thousands of theaters across the country several times per day, you're right. A couple points:

    1. I'm a "starving college student," but I plunked down $150 for a leather chair from Office Depot. It is *definitely* worth it--it is super comfortable. I figure, any component like a chair you sit on all day, or a monitor you stare at all day (100 Hz refresh, baby!) is worth spending extra for. Your body is worth more than a few bucks, right?

    2. I agree that most of these keyboards are gimmicks. But I love split keyboards. I bought an I-MMT basic split keyboard (no annoying Internet function keys) for $40 a few years ago. Now I'm looking at a basic split-key from Belkin at $22. My arms always feel scrunched up when I type on keyboards without a split.

    Regards.
