There should be a standalone Composer, IMO. X-Chat Aqua satisfies my IRC needs under OS X, but Composer is a freely available and easy-to-use WYSIWYG HTML editor that has been my primary work environment in the past for my personal websites.

There's probably going to be a number of people who believe "WYSIWYG sux" and quite a few more who think that Composer is irrelevant in the face of far more expensive commercial packages, but I just want something that I can use to make non-mission-critical personal webpages. I can do this now with regular Moz, but I'd rather not download a 15MB alpha every few weeks over my 56k, or load a web browser, email client, and IRC client into memory along with my editor of choice.

Some of us, regrettably, are still stuck without broadband.

I have much the same setup as this uClinux gadget would provide, except using an Apple AirPort base station connected to a 10/100 switch. It still provides the wireless access which is its primary design purpose, but my biggest use for it is as a dialup router. It performs all the functions you would expect from a router (DHCP. port filtering, etc) and is set to dial out automatically when it detects outbound traffic.

I concur with your point that having multiple computers using the same dialup connection at the same time is essentially pointless, but this is a whole hell of a lot easier for me than having a modem hooked up to every computer and dialing out seperately on each one. The whole idea is getting tossed out the window as soon as I get DSL (middle of this month according to ATT), but until then, it's made accessing the Internet with each of the computers I use a whole lot easier.

Just wondering... the article says that Burst now only employs two people. I don't know how functional the company still is (their website is up at least), but I would think that like SCO, their primary goal is pursuing this lawsuit. The obvious difference is that Burst seems to have a legitimate claim. After they (hopefully) win the MS case, I would hope that the two people working at Burst would continue to develop their business and their technology, rather than just sitting back on a fat cash settlement or award.

What other programming do they have to choose when the broadcasters are afraid to take risks and would rather stay with sappy soap operas, sports, and "reality TV" that have all proven to be popular? Networks don't like risk-taking because it doesn't have an ensured, built-in profit margin. When something good comes along, they'll milk it for all it's worth. Once again, see the endless deluge of reality crap, "Friends" ripoffs, and for more tragic examples, the recent declines of Star Trek and the Simpsons.

On the other hand, I know nothing about producing television, and seemingly even less about herding sheep.

This actually isn't true. Back to the Future parts II and III were originally a single script called Paradox that was to include all the future/1985A/Wild West storylines of the completed films in one 3.5-hour long megasequel. Universal made Zemeckis and Gale split it up into two movies for much the same reasons the parent asserts Kill Bill is being split up.

  17. Themes, no Beige G3 support on Panther Analysis Getting Underway · · Score: 1

Just in case anybody from Apple is reading...

I'm quite glad to hear the number of positive reports about the new Finder; I guess that means the thing that bothers me most from the screenshots is the Brushed Metal interface. It just doesn't fit for me. I'd like to have theme support back as it was in OS 8.5->9.2. Not that I'm pining for the days of Classic or anything, but I would eagerly use a Platinum theme or Dark Platinum from OS X Server 1.x. I would also take the current Aqua (with graphite buttons) over the new "toned-down" Aqua.

Another thing that bothers me is the lack of Beige G3 install support. With the new Sonnet 1GHz G4 ZIF or even the XLR8 800MHz G3 upgrade, I can make my Beige the rough equivalent of a more modern Mac desktop, tho possibly not a top of the line one and definitely not the G5. I'm not too terribly worried about it however, as XPostFacto will allow me to install even if Apple doesn't want me to.

No, really. My grandfather bought them for me at the local Goodwill. It's a pity I don't have a link, but one of them even has the exact same color scheme as the original Intellimouse. It's optical, has 4 buttons and two scroll wheels, and works really well under Mac OS X. To make a different point, I would argue that even some soundtracks don't have a coherent theme, at least those for popular wide-release "teen movies." Quite a few (let's see... Spider-Man is the first example that pops into my mind) exist simply as vehicles for the pop singles that are shoved indiscriminately onto them, 3 or 4 of which may actually appear during the movie's closing credits.

However, SBC just completed a huge revamp on their local CO, so I may now have some hope for DSL. However, I want to give SBC the finger since their DSL plans seem a ripoff, and go with somebody like Speakeasy, who has much more lax restrictions on my bandwidth usage. But I'd like to hear if anybody has had any trouble with getting installation, service, etc. from a provider who isn't the phone company running the CO. Also, has anyone had any problems dealing with the phone company itself afterwards, assuming you kept them for voice service? Thanks.

  25. Good riddance. on Microsoft Kills Off Mac IE, Blames Safari · · Score: 1

I have to say that IE for Mac OS X gets my top billing for worst computer program ever. I had used IE 4 and 5 regularly under OS 8-9, and when I installed OS X beta I figured that version of IE would be pretty much the same, being a straight port. Boy, was I ever wrong. IE under Public Beta and 10.0 was the slowest program on my machine to launch, was terribly slow at loading pages, and would occasionally crash when I tried to access certain websites. Granted, there could be other factors involved in this, namely my dialup, the relative speed of my computer (400MHz G3), and the fact that both PB and 10.0 were essentially unfinished releases; but that doesn't change the fact that whenever I searched out an IE alternative, invariably its performance was far superior to IE. Even a full install of Mozilla, with all its infamous bloat, was consistently more stable and usable than IE, if somewhat uglier. With the advent of Camino and now Safari, I personally have no reason to use IE. I haven't used it regularly since a brief spurt in the early 10.1 days when my Moz install mysteriously broke. It's still installed on this iBook (for some reason), but I've launched it maybe twice in a half-year of ownership. Under OS 9, sure, IE was pretty good. But I'm never going to use it again under OS X.
