Given the rather surprising amount of Artificial Intelligence related categories recently, I think the powers that be should seriously considering adding an AI topic. Just my 2 cents.
ForensicTec officials said they stumbled upon the military networks about two months ago, while checking on network security for a private-sector client.
Someone new to a Dvorak probably tried to type in "lynx http://www.google.com" but instead got "nmap -v -p 1-1024 -sS -P0 army.mil -T paranoid".
I think "sell-out" is an excellent term with l0pht. I remember when l0pht crack was free.....a free GUI password cracker...It was tremendous to me. But then they sold-out, and the next version of their software wasnt free, it had all sorts of little catches unless you wanted to shell out the 200 bucks to get the real thing. So I went looking for the previous version of their software, and it turns out they deleted the GUI version from their archives, so that people couldnt download that for free and take away from their buisness.
It was at that moment that I knew L0pht had sold out. As punishment, I suggest officially taking the leetness out of their name: Loft.
How about selling Microsoft Action Figures for 30 bucks a pop? There could be a role playing game and everything! This could easily drive the price of Win XP Home to 10 bucks a CD.
Imagine the glint in a child's eyes when they see their new:
Steve "Basher" Ballmer - Crushing Competitors as easily as he totally freaks out about Microsofts "Message". Now with optional Club to beat you choice of AOL icon, Penguin, or Whatever-the hell-that-demonic-OSX-Platypus is!
Bill "Money" Gates - Teached Children the values of sound financial management - buy low, sell exorbitant. Also instructs on how to "borrow" TCP stacks from BSD Licensed software! Now comes with optional "Small Carribean Island with mountain shaped like Skull" (150$ retail) - a perfect lair.
Richard "Get a Job you Hippie" Stallman - Comes with Stinkbomb activated when you touch his software - The message is clear Long hair and free software are Communist. The ultimate in family values - America, Microsoft!
Evil Tux - Painfully teaches children early about the dangers of playing with penguins - Keep him away from face and Groin areas!
Bob, the Well-Bankrolled FUD Software Study producer - Just poke his belly, he'll come up with classics like..."Linux is less secure than Windows", "Nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft", "The first hit is free!" and everybodys favorite "Did I mention youre going to need some backup servers?"
Microsoft - The Toys. The Game. Resistance is futile!
A sample size of 1 is in fact an experimental sample size of many--just here during Earth's climatic history Ummm....Im sorry, but I thought that there was, perhaps many singular events where life was formed billions of years ago, but simple evolution and extinction dont "scale" to be equivalent to non-life becoming life.
Furthermore, I recall reading a book..."Probability 1", that spend several chapters mucking around before submitting a "proof" that there must be intelligent life elsewhere...As I recall, it hinged on one instance of life, which is us.
Parent makes a very insightful point: Roadrunner is saying "fuck off" to these customers, and they dont give a damn about whomever gets pissed off by this.
Users who get pissed off are going to be the largest consumers of bandwith - that 10% that consumes 90%. This is also why ISPs block ports 80, 21, etc.
I fully agree with the Roadrunner on this issue. It makes a great deal of sense if you look at it from a buiness perspective. The number of consumers who feel so adamantly about file-sharing that they will jump ship is relatively small - an overwhelming amount of net users dont even know what the hell "ports" are. Oh, and Roadrunner wont hafta service any more of those irritating DMCA-violation RIAA letters.
As a Linux user wanting to spread The Word, I tried to get my parents interested in Linux and Open Source Software. I showed them Mandrake - all the cute little icons and the cool games and screensavers. Since they dont do much other than web-surfing (mainly reading email thru a web interface), it seemed like a natural choice.
Then, I made the mistake of showing my mother a Gentoo Linux install - a screenfull of bizzare and verbose gcc flags scrolling across a text console. She became frightened and intimidated. I tried to explain to her that all I did was type 2 words, "emerge gnome", and that it was nothing to be scared of - and I tried to explain the process. Now, shes afraid to try Linux - and everyone I try to recommend Linux to gets scared off by her proclamations of how "difficult" it is.
*sigh* Oh well.....who was it that said "GUIs are like diapers - everyone grows out of them eventually".
Hmmm.....maybe. But as I recall, somebody had a hacking contest with default installs of Mandrake and SuSE, and nobody rooted the servers. I think that noobs would have to go out of their way a little to make their system insecure.
Contrast that to.....IIRC Extremetech, which set up a Win2k and IIS server, and had it infected with Code Red Twice within like 26 minutes of connecting it to the web and downloading updates from Microsoft.
First off, theres a formatting error in Question 4...needs to be bold and italicized, etc.
Pardon me if im wrong, but if that interview was viewsed as very "straight up", then/. must have been interviewing advertising pamphlets in the past.
Dont see what I mean? "enabled" "facilitating" "global".....at least he didnt say "paradigm".
Desktop derivatives will be made available by each of the respective Linux companies. Since they will not carry the UnitedLinux brand and do not need application certification, their binaries may be available based on the individual company's policies.
I think that Mr Love's defence of his Buisness Model is very weak. I appreciate the Red Hat/Mandrake/Gentoo. etc. ability to download an ISO, and then burn it onto a CD. Not FTP'ing the files, not being given a limited time trial....And I thought that it was interesting that United Linux, essentially has forsaken the Desktop. It looks to me like United is just the last ditch alliance to stop Red Hat from complete buisness market domination. The companies making up United Linux dont really have the best Desktop/ISO policies, and as far as I could see there was no asssurance at all that the Desktop Distros would be LSB compliant. I came away from reading this very underwhelmed....
Okay, Ive got an Athlon 1300 with a Geforce 2 Ultra. Under XP, Winamp visualizations that are greater than maybe 600x400 look really bad because of the raw crunching power necessary to make the pretty shapes. I know that WINE (or the Linux graphics subsystem in general), sometimes has speed problems relative to Windows so if that problem continues with these visulizations, I think it would be pretty wimpy if a good system could only run Visulizations adequately at like 200x200.
Well, ignoring the spelling error, I am still pretty surprised. Among my friends, nobody has ever had a "local shop" assemble our computers - Theyre either HPs, Dells, or DIY projects. Of all the people I have helped get computers, They never go with the local shop - They seem more comfortable purchasing from a big, stable company, like Dell. I do not know anybody that has a local shop computer, and yes, I do live in an area where there are local shops. But I have never seen anyone with a White Box computer.
However, I can see how a local shop computer might be cheaper or more reliable. So that said...Do any/. readers have a white box computer? Were there any significant issues regarding warranty, price, or component quality? And most importantly, would you recommend a White Box over a Big Name for people looking to purchase a new computer?

It is official; Shanghai Newspaper confirms: Western Civilization is dying!!!
One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Western Civilization community when Al-Jazeera TV confirmed that Western Civilization market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of the World Culture Market. Coming on the heels of a recent Beijing Times study that points to the implosion of Western Civilization, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along: Western Civilization is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by these last ditch attempts to maintain "control" over an increasingly restless populace.
You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict Western Civilization's future. The hand writing is on the Eastern-styled wall: Western Civilization faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Western Civilization because Western Civilization is dying. Things are looking very bad for Western Civilization. As many of us are already aware, and this story further demonstrates, Western Civilization continues to lose the trust of its citizens. Red ink flows like a river of blood.
All major surveys show that Western Civilization has steadily declined in market share. Western Civilization is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Western Civilization is to survive at all it will be among academic dilettante dabblers that survived the horrible asteroid strike. Western Civilization continues to expand, and will eventually implode into a forgotten footprint on History. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Western Civilization is dead.
I noticed that hte patch in question was being hosted by Loki. Given the high cost of bandwith (at least en masse) and the fact that theyre bankrupt, why are they still hosting patch downloads? Or did I miss something in this whole Loki debacle....
Anyways, Im glad that support for Tribes 2 has continued for Linux (Can you still buy it?)....But are there any other companies that are doing what Loki did?

Yes, yes there are 64 possible amino acid encodings. However, by only yielding 22 possible amino acids, the system provides a level of redundancy. The redundancy usually occurs around the third nucleotide, for instance, Ser can be coded AGU and AGC. This redundancy compensates for "point mutations", mutations that effect only one nucleotide. Because of the redundancy of the genetic code, the effect of point mutations is reduced by about 1/4. From looking at the old Codon Table, it is clear that the new amino acid was coded by UAG (the "amber" discussed in the article). However, UAG obviously stops for some organisms (Scientists dont make things up), so perhaps UAG stops unless the complementary tRNA can be found? If this is the case, then it is likely that all three if the "stop" codons code for certain new amino acids in some organisms. The trick, of course, is finding them.
The most curious thing is that if sys admins are proced at 60k for the transmeta, then Athlon platform will be less expensive than the Transmeta Blade solution. Somehow, I would feel more comfortable with the putatively more powerful Athlons....
When I started looking at/. about a year ago, I was amazed by all the times JonKatz would post a story and at least half the responses were of the effect "Katz sucks". Why did people hate Katz so much?

The people around me, however, didnt seem to mind. Fools.) and plain stupidity (didn't he give Zoolander or some such trash a confident "thumbs up"?).

Probably true, but just to fill all you non-Us people in, NPR is generally thought of as representative of a very liberal viewpoint in the States. One would of thought they would embrace open formats rather than more closed formats.
Seems like an obvious example of hypocrisy, from an institution that's one of the few sources of really high quality media (in general, the content on Public media outlets [PBS and NPR] is vastly superior to the commercial tripe we're all used to).
I seriously don't understand why virtually all of NPR's (National Public Radio's) online stuff is real audio encoded. I mean, wouldn't.mp3 (or.ogg?) encoding be cheaper and enable a wider variety of players?

For instance, check this out. The Crusoe laptop does SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the other "ultra-portables". The hyped "larger cache" is an absolute necessity for the Transmeta processors; they rely on the larger cache to do stuff like "code morphing", because Crusoe is naturally a 128-bit proc, and all these apps are 32-bit, kinda like an emulation mode. That's really why the larger cache is necessary.
I would imageine, however, that a Linux distro with all software compiled on a crusoe would run a lot faster than Windows XP.
