As a Linux user wanting to spread The Word, I tried to get my parents interested in Linux and Open Source Software. I showed them Mandrake - all the cute little icons and the cool games and screensavers. Since they dont do much other than web-surfing (mainly reading email thru a web interface), it seemed like a natural choice.
Then, I made the mistake of showing my mother a Gentoo Linux install - a screenfull of bizzare and verbose gcc flags scrolling across a text console. She became frightened and intimidated. I tried to explain to her that all I did was type 2 words, "emerge gnome", and that it was nothing to be scared of - and I tried to explain the process. Now, shes afraid to try Linux - and everyone I try to recommend Linux to gets scared off by her proclamations of how "difficult" it is.
*sigh* Oh well.....who was it that said "GUIs are like diapers - everyone grows out of them eventually".
Hmmm.....maybe. But as I recall, somebody had a hacking contest with default installs of Mandrake and SuSE, and nobody rooted the servers. I think that noobs would have to go out of their way a little to make their system insecure.
Contrast that to.....IIRC Extremetech, which set up a Win2k and IIS server, and had it infected with Code Red Twice within like 26 minutes of connecting it to the web and downloading updates from Microsoft.

I think that Mr Love's defence of his Buisness Model is very weak. I appreciate the Red Hat/Mandrake/Gentoo. etc. ability to download an ISO, and then burn it onto a CD. Not FTP'ing the files, not being given a limited time trial....And I thought that it was interesting that United Linux, essentially has forsaken the Desktop. It looks to me like United is just the last ditch alliance to stop Red Hat from complete buisness market domination. The companies making up United Linux dont really have the best Desktop/ISO policies, and as far as I could see there was no asssurance at all that the Desktop Distros would be LSB compliant. I came away from reading this very underwhelmed....
Okay, Ive got an Athlon 1300 with a Geforce 2 Ultra. Under XP, Winamp visualizations that are greater than maybe 600x400 look really bad because of the raw crunching power necessary to make the pretty shapes. I know that WINE (or the Linux graphics subsystem in general), sometimes has speed problems relative to Windows so if that problem continues with these visulizations, I think it would be pretty wimpy if a good system could only run Visulizations adequately at like 200x200.
Well, ignoring the spelling error, I am still pretty surprised. Among my friends, nobody has ever had a "local shop" assemble our computers - Theyre either HPs, Dells, or DIY projects. Of all the people I have helped get computers, They never go with the local shop - They seem more comfortable purchasing from a big, stable company, like Dell. I do not know anybody that has a local shop computer, and yes, I do live in an area where there are local shops. But I have never seen anyone with a White Box computer.
However, I can see how a local shop computer might be cheaper or more reliable. So that said...Do any/. readers have a white box computer? Were there any significant issues regarding warranty, price, or component quality? And most importantly, would you recommend a White Box over a Big Name for people looking to purchase a new computer?

I hate to say this to all you Linus-junkies, but the Crusoe processor runs SIGNIFICANTLY slower than a similar Intel or AMD processor.
For instance, check this out. The Crusoe laptop does SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the other "ultra-portables". The hyped "larger cache" is an absolute necessity for the Transmeta processors; they rely on the larger cache to do stuff like "code morphing", because Crusoe is naturally a 128-bit proc, and all these apps are 32-bit, kinda like an emulation mode. That's really why the larger cache is necessary.
I would imageine, however, that a Linux distro with all software compiled on a crusoe would run a lot faster than Windows XP.

I hate to say this to all you Linus-junkies, but the Crusoe processor runs SIGNIFICANTLY slower than a similar Intel or AMD processor.
For instance, check this out. The Crusoe laptop does SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the other "ultra-portables". The hyped "larger cache" is an absolute necessity for the Transmeta processors; they rely on the larger cache to do stuff like "code morphing", because Crusoe is naturally a 128-bit proc, and all these apps are 32-bit, kinda like an emulation mode. That's really why the larger cache is necessary.
I would imageine, however, that a Linux distro with all software compiled on a crusoe would run a lot faster than Windows XP.
