  1. Re:Offtopic advice on Lowest Raw Score Ever on the SAT · · Score: 1

As a recent conqueror of the college application process, I think that your advice should be tempered a bit.

You can generally only take the PSATs (pre-SATs) twice, "for practice" during sophomore year and "for real" during junior year. The PSAT is curved easier than the SAT and has generally easier questions. A good score on the PSAT can make you a National Merit Scholar, but that won't guarantee your acceptance to Harvard (not by a long shot).

A lot of colleges will break apart your math and verbal scores and only look at the highest ones when your file gets reviewed. This means that if you score poorly on the math but well on the verbal, you can take the test again without worrying that you won't match your verbal score a second time.

That said, however, more presigious colleges will note if you've taken te SAT more than 3 times, especially if it is taken in succeeding months with very little score change. Take the SAT 4 times, and you're just hurting yourself.

Maybe I'm just being stupid, but I think the pairwise system of voting for national elections would be pretty cool. Completely infeasible, of course, but still cool.

I imagine the 2000 Presidential candidates would be:
    GW Bush
    Al Gore
    Pat Buchanan
    Ralph Nader
    No One

It would require each voter casting 4+3+2+1=10 votes, so of course it wouldn't happen, but I imagine that the "No one" option would probably finish very strongly, perhaps even winning the election. (I think Scott Adams discussed that if one of the major parties nominated a bag of lettuce, it would capture 40% of the popular vote because it "has good character").

Where this sort of voting might actually useful (if voters wouldn't mind) would be in primaries, where definitive preferences for certain candidates would be shown, and other candidates would find out if their campaign will go anywhere much faster....maybe. Then again, this would require voters being well informed about each candidate, and we all know that isnt gonna happen.

Most of the crap that includes terms like "blog" or "blogsphere" involve some pompous blowhard with an inflated sense of importance ranting about triviality. Okay, so that describes most of slashdot, but regardless, a blog topic would be nice so I can filter all this stuff out.

As someone who spent a lot of time working with an actual Turing Test bot, I'd just like to say that the term "Turing Test" really only applies to a "conversation" between computers and people, not emulating behavior in games, etc. I mean, when Turing wrote Computing Machinery and Intelligence, this isn't really what he envisioned to be a Turing Test.

From what I could gather, this is a lot closer to a programming tournament rather than a Turing Test...

Actually, Turkey is a distinctly NON-ISLAMIC democracy. The success of democracy in Turkey can be traced to the rather forceful seperation of Church and State following World War One. For instance, women are not allowed to wear veils. A much better example of a true Islamic democracy is Egypt, but that has been plagued with problems.

Wow....judging from the earlier games it seemed like Kramniks methodical defense with black (whatever happened to the much vaunted "Berlin Wall"?)and vigorous attack with white were going to yield a lossless set for the world champion. But now with a 3-3 set and Fritz going 2.5 - .5 in the last 3 matches, it seems that the computer has "turned the tide"...

IMO, this is only because of Fritz being allowed to make changes to itself to edit its openings. Previous matches were usually charachterized by the games falling into a predictable queen sacrifice. But it looks like by changing the openings around, Fritz is preventing Kramnik from forcing the game into a defensive draw.

Also, The last 2 games have been charachterized by risky Kramnik moves that might be very beneficial against humans, but Fritz is able to play essentially perfect defense. To me, it seems like Kramnik has thrown out his very defensive strategy that gave him a 2 game lead in favor of a more attacking strategy.

    5 bucks on Fritz.
