Or are you complaining that stalking a starlet or ex-girlfriend is not -precisely- the same crime as stalking a police officer?
Yeah I think that she should just consider it point-taken and move on. She got the buzz out there (er, here) and could probably simply admit it was a form of harassment. So long as it's not aggravated or any other rider. Kind of a win-win for the authorities too.
But I don't live there. so YMMV.
If her point is beyond "there is a DEA force working our area" then I fail to see it. A blog titled "mass corruption" or "inefficient/unqualified members of force" or something like that then the blog currently fails to motivate.
whether an officer investigating a woman without a warrant, or a woman investigating a policeman without a warrant
As a citizen of the USA I object to a qualification like that! A warrant is issued by authority because *the act is illegal otherwise*. When an officer wants to break down your door, that's B&E. With a proper warrant it is a protected act such that no damages can be awarded.
You have the right to "pursue..." which means learning is just a matter of extent. You straw man when you play that as 'Investigation'. And if you play it as needing a warrant that's just wrong.
Why do you think there are laws against inciting to riot? Because it's easier to suppress dissent!
oh and [citation needed] because AFAIK the blog has not incited even one riot. Not even a public assembly. Hell, not even much in the way of local coverage until the arrest. sigh.
The fact that she's putting this stuff on a blog seems to be irrelevant, by which I mean it's not a special form of expression here. She's not acting in the manner of a journalist,
I'm trying to figure out why someone who has backed freedom of expression cases would ever try to tie that right into being a journalist. Or why it must be "special" in some way.
I think you may be thinking of this from Jonathan Swift?
" That the remaining Hundred thousand, may, at a Year old, be offered in Sale to the Persons of Quality and Fortune, through the Kingdom; always advising the Mother to let them suck plentifully in the last Month, so as to render them plump, and fat for a good Table. "
which is a satire, published in the early 18th century, by what served as AC at the time.
Also, I'd like to caution you that we are a extreme set of the population. Opinions here may not be valuable to someone trying to reach the rest of the population.
Which is a way of saying that you don't have a clue how to leverage gaming to edification in science.
Science isn't problem solving, it's problem identification.
An attempt at game-play within the goal of "increasing science literacy and awareness" should constantly present new technical facts and procedural scenarios. That's not game play.
And is it science or scientific "literacy and awareness"? They're not the same thing.
I'd like to know from whence this alleged mandate comes.
I think you mean you are another group with a common bond and you have a goal. "Non Profit"? I didn't see any mention of 501C.
Increase science literacy and awareness - maybe you could explain just what metric you would use.
"Science Alberta Foundation operates under the governance of a volunteer Board of Directors composed of accomplished individuals from across the province"
I agree that that phrase is less often said than it needs to be said.
But by itself it accomplishes little. It can even be counter-productive. How often do *you* want to hear your loved one tell you "I'm sorry!" for exactly the same thing. Without some commitment to change (and progress thereof) it's really pretty meaningless.
You are a wise person. I found myself nodding as I read every one of your points.
Watch that temper though. A time may come when the wife just won't agree to disagree and you *will* go to bed angry. At that point your marriage probably needs some outside help.
(I liked #6 by another poster)
7. take time out. Choose something invigorating that gets you both away from the job, the kids, the in-laws, the computer and the budget. Do this regularly. If you have divergent interests, you pick one time, the wife picks the next time and so on. Optimally these "excursions" should be something completely out of both of your comfort zones. Neither of you know Matisse from Manet? Go to an art gallery or even a local showing. Volunteer at an archaeological dig.
8. Be aware of each others' stress indicators and help each other in recognizing the buildup. We're not always very aware of our own stress buildup. Do #7 proportionally;)
I get the joke, but can't let this pass. Communication and Commitment. Way too many people go into marriage thinking it's love that will keep us together. HAH! Wait till you can't pay the bills. Suddenly cuddling doesn't quite cut it.
Like any geek the poster is probably looking for, but not directly, some kind of acid test. Here's a suggestion; Borrow a kid for a week. Preferably two or more. Preferably tweens. Two smart people can go very badly wrong if they don't have some kind of Confidence in each other when it comes to decisions about their children. I don't mean that one would do something wrong - that's the easy one to solve. I mean regarding rational choices; Is bedtime 8 or 9 pm? Should a 10 year old have a cell phone? Johnny wants to go to church with his friends, but we're of a different (or no) faith.
I have to agree with GP. The reflectivity should probably be different. So some kind of satellite picture should be available. Maybe just not to us great unwashed.
Maybe it's a regional thing but I've often heard here in the midwest USA of canoe referring to "some kind of vessel". I liked the hyperbolic touch actually.
Our carrier is fighting a battle to install a new cell tower. Just the thought that it's within a mile of an elementary school has half the town in an uproar. There's a smallish, but vocal, group claiming long term effects to health, DNA damage, etc.
I don't think there are many school systems which could afford the liability.
I'd prefer my computer allow me to write to it with my own code. that's harder if the normal flash process involves signing. and even harder if that must be bought.
I've always wondered that too! I mean, there is obviously information in the spectra outside average sensitivity. InfraRed especially! Some organisms *have* developed some detection in that range.
Driving your nice little environment degrading Toyota Prius to Germany and finding out they have trimmed all branches of trees so that only VW, BMW, Merc and Audi can pass through without being scratched would probably upset you just as much
Fantastic! I nominate yours for a Slashdot Achievement (which if they don't have then they certainly *should* have!)
Everytime I get fed up with the inanity of slashdot posts and tired of the fanboy astroturfing and sickened by the pure opinion without foundation... along comes a great post like yours. thanks.
I agree that's a pretty sad decision in terms of student first amendment rights, but she's also got the Guiles v. Marineau case to her credit on the same issue (the difference being the latter more obviously dealt with clearly political speech).
Please point out to me the First Amendment applying more to political (or any other kind of) speech?!
Amendment I: Freedom of speech, religion, press, petition and assembly.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances
he put 6 cans of coke in a refrigerator in an office kitchen, unlabeled and unguarded. of course, the cans of coke slowly disappeared. then he put 6 dollar bills on a plate in a refrigerator in an office kitchen, unlabeled and unguarded. guess what? no one took the money
People were probably too interested in finding out how that plate of money might become a cake or a plate of cookies or something. They had to assign some reasoning for there being a plate of money in the office refrigerator. If it were me I'd guess that for whatever reason, it being the office and all, it was much smarter to leave it alone.
I wouldn't take either but I'd value it like this: The can of pop is immutable the dollar is not. Assuming there's no pop machine, then that 'thing' cannot be replaced. Taking a dollar still leaves open the scenario of then going to friends to borrow a dollar to replace it. Or 4 quarters. Or a check for a dollar.
Actually, there's plenty to improve in a typical OS: making the OS more componentized, programmable, adding new layers of APIs for different functional domains, and otherwise supporting the developers that write code for that OS, so that they can be more productive and write more functional code in a fraction of time.
I think your example fails supremely in representing your point. I think your point is valid. Add to your citations the constant need to upgrade the OS for new hardware paradigms (give! me NBTP - Nano Bot Transmission Protocol) and I think there's a lot of room for new ideas in OS.

wow. just... wow.
Tell it to Jefferson, Adams, Franklin.

total BS.
oh God our poor poor devalued constitution. /cry
you need to turn the gummy bear upside down!
no, er, wait, that isn't right.... ;)

we *never* know whey they're angry. That's half the battle; getting them to clarify. ;)

I already blew my mod on this thread but I hope others find it as ironically insightful.

you severely over-estimate the size of children.
Dear God,
You can set up sorting rules.
thanks,

I think those capabilities are demonstrably useful. Why haven't human developed those abilities?
