I've tried in my personal life, but it is a "truth-which-must-not-be-spoken". Folks here are bombarded with Orange Alerts and political ads about how the terrorists will kill us all if Kerry gets elected. It's like Fahrenheit 911. They are pretty young. I think this is an opportunity for you to give the "science is cool" lecture -- that it is cool to be a scientist discovering new things and that scientists do good things for everybody.

IT might be a little tougher to envison than some fields, "Kids can you imagine a world without relational databases!?!" But make them aware of all the digital devices around them: cell phones, DVD players, microwave and VCR timers, alarm clocks, portable music players. Let it sink in that somebody had to invent those replacements for earlier tools and if the robots in the movies are ever to exist, a lot of people are going to have to add together their discoveries over time to achieve those future wonders.

Remembering that they are young, here's another angle. If you know they have been exposed to computers already, do you know anybody who has a working manual typewriter? Borrow it and bring it in with some paper and white-out. Let the kids somatically experience what the old days were like. After that, you could probably lead a meaningful discussion group as much as a lecture.

That said, it is unlikely "good middle-class" jobs will spring up like dandelions in spring if Kerry is elected. Considering that Al Franken has had Kerry over to his place for potluck and strategy, I thought it was pretty telling when someone called the show and demanded details on a job strategy and got, "Hmmm, yeah. That's a tough one. Can't roll back global trade. It's a new world. Yup, a tough one." All I ever hear is eliminating tax breaks for off-shoring. Surprising. With the meager experience of two servers and two workstations, I'd have to give the party-line answer that lock-ups generally mean hardware problems. I just don't see "random" linux lock ups -- and I would like to think that our workstations are pretty darn rich.

I was having a problem _specifically_ with the mplayer plug-in and some movie sites the other month. Seemed like it was calling a fresh mplayer every frame or something. Would grind the desktop to a halt if I couldn't log out fast enough. Even then, I could (slowly) make a VNC connection from the other workstation and do an orderly reboot.

So, no. I just don't see it. Lock ups with bad hardware (duh) and lock ups during installation while fumbling for the correct drivers, yes. During normal operation, no.

When we moved to Baltimore City, the first thing I did was go down to the city hall planning department. They looked at me like my spaceship had just landed when I asked whether they had a similar publication. So, in a moment of inspiration, this WASP midwesterner asked where the Jewish neighborhoods were. _THAT_ they knew.

Worked like a charm and I've used it in subsequent moves. Some subcultures really do want their kids to grow up to be doctors and practice the family values the redneck fundamentals mouth off about. Just my experience, folks.
