Interestingly (OT, just for the record; I'll be nice and post without the bonus), the same thing is happening with SUNY Stony Brook. Not only is it a sin to call it "SUNY" these days, but they're actually trying to go private (state isn't being to nice about it) within the next few years. Just in time for me to get my degree and slip out right before tuition goes through the roof.

I think the police department in your town should require citizens to have RFID implants, and their movements/location should be recorded at all times. If anyone is ever murdered/raped/abducted, or if a robbery is ever reported, someone can check the recording and use the unique ID to tell almost instintaniously who the criminal is. There wouldn't even be a need to have a live watch over the feeds.

You wouldn't mind that, would you?

"Gates...when on to say that '[Open source] doesn't guarantee upward compatibility.'"

He's right - it doesn't. I'd say it guarantees it evenly with the way Microsoft guarantees it - if you just happen to have the correct version of the correct software, you'll have upwards compatability. If you chose the wrong end of the fork, then you're screwed.

On the other hand, Open Source, by definition, allows unlimited forking. And if there's a compatibility break between versions, you can be sure that someone, somewhere is going to start up a backwards-compatability fork, or write a backwards-compatibiltiy patch; if the problem is enough to bug you, it's probably enough of a problem to bug other people. And, if there's no backwards-compatibility fork available, you can always Do It Yourself, or put up a note on the proper mailing list, letting people know that the demand is out there, and asking if anyone else has the same need/desire.

With propritary software, the user is basically under the company's control. Unless you're a huge corporation with massive buying power and enough pull in the management level of Microsoft, all you'll wind up with is a "You're screwed, buy our other newer, more expensive software."

Overall, I'm pretty sure Open Source Software is more compatible, and that there's more old versions of software available to reduce the need for backwards compatibility.

So? I have no problem with a political party having a closed meeting. It might not be the best idea, if the standard is for such meetings to be open, but it's perfectly fine.

In fact, the idea that party meetings should be open is a pretty scary one. The party in control could mandate that all meetings must be open. As a result, that party could continue to hold closed meetings (if they've got enough power to unilatterly push through such a law, they've got enough power to ignore it), and smaller parties which challanged the government would find themselves the scruteny of law enforcement.

If you actually bother to read the articles, rather than just look at the pictures, you'd see that they used the images to scare new inmates.

The problem was/is basically that the prisons are over-populated and understaffed. Most of these prisoners are incredibly rebellious. The only way for the under-trained, under-manned guards to maintain order was to use fear, and these took these pictures to show ariving inmates and post in their cells, to scare them into behaving.

I'm not justifying what they did, but it would be nice if people actually read all those little squiggly lines that are next to those pretty images. It might help to save time, or even lives, in the future.

They're still making devices with USB 1.1? Especially for something like an MP3 player, where you're moving large amounts of data, USB 2 is a must. For low-end devices with only 512M of storage, you're going to be doing a lot of adding/removing of files, which makes having to constantly wait during every session a hastle; for the larger devices, it's insane to have to wait forever for your collection to transfer over the outdated 1.1 spec.

In a world where modern machines come with USB 2, and it's also backwards compatible with USB 1, there's no excuse to make an mp3 player that only supports USB 1.1.
