I would like to take a slashdot troll up and see what the effect of zero-G is on said troll with a view to simulating any nausea and vomiting right here on the ground upon the user hitting the submit button. All I'll need is myself, a troll, a barf bag and a stick to whack the troll with.
If a country wants to enact oppressive laws that censor citizens and foreigners alike that's their perogative. Just another reason to boycott travel to such a country. It's not the only country I'd choose to forgo unless I had to travel.
Meanwhile their Royal Family becomes less and less atuned to the sentiment of their populace. In other places and at other times similar action has usually led to poor leadership, the Royal Family becoming less relevant, and eventually the deposition of that family, often in a bloody revolution. It's the Royal Family that should be asking for this crackdown to end, if they know their history.
I've been very careful but does the above paragraph mean it's no longer safe for me to travel to Thailand?
Computers aren't like physical objects--they're vastly more configurable. Most users seem to value convenience and ease-of-use above all other attributes, and the way they've embraced webmail shows it. I'm not one of them, but that's the way users are going. Their definition of "best" is different than your definition of best.
Email is inherently suited to being a web based application. For a start retrieving and sending messages requires an Internet connection. Secondly, most email messages are just text and don't require fancy controls. (Where you need rich text, controls are still easily accomodated. Wher eyou need more, you use attachments for which funcitonality is also easily provided in a web app).
It doesn't matter how configurable a computer is. Web applications have limitations that desktop applications do not have (and to a lesser extent the opposite is also true). It really is a question of using the right tool for the job.
Hey this guy is an idiot and should be prosecuted - you simply can't let people get away without paying for malicious damage like the - but is anyone on the case to make sure the idiots that ran the business into the ground are nailed if they did the slightest thing wrong? They did a lot more wrong.
Right now web apps are king because they're always only the nearest computer away, and work on almost everything.
Incorrect. The assumption that you always have a net connection everywhere you go is a terrible one. That's simply not the case and while the net will reach more and more places and wireless broadband will get cheaper, having a computer crippled because you're not online is not acceptable for a large number of applications.
Right now, you can either develop for the web, which will work everywhere, or write one app in Win32/.Net, one in Objective C for Mac, one in Java with Blackberry specific apis, one in Objective C for iPhone, one in [whatever palm is up to], one in.net for winmobile, etc, etc etc.
What's wrong with writing it in Java for all platforms? Sure you need to test on each platform, but if you think that's not the case for the web as well you're either not very experienced or you're in denial.
Sure a lot of apps can be moved to a web interface. A lot of carpentry can also be done with a hacksaw. The question isn't "Can it be done?" but rather "Is this the best tool for the job?". For example I strongly believe a web app is an awful idea for an office suite. (Having non-sensitive documents stored and editable on the web may be a good idea depending on the application, but there's nothing wrong with using a standard format and using the appropriate document editor. Sure a web interface would give you consistent editing but the requirement that you're online and the speed at which a web app will work are a bigger disadvantage.)
Personally I don't find any of Joel's ramblings interesting anymore. He has a very skewed view. Some of what he says is just plain wrong. (He completely lost me when he posted about Bill Gates' arrogant behaviour in a hero worshipping tone. If you can't even recognise unprofessional behaviour when you see it your professional opinion means very little to me).
After all, what's a dutchman (or woman) to do when they have the economy blues but hoist the Jolly Roger and go out for a good old pillage on the high seas.
Then get a dog of the same breed - behavioral traits are fairly inbred in dogs.
Temperament varies wildly within a breed. Consider the number Labrador puppies that fail seeing eye dog training. Consider the amount of money people will pay for a show dog based on it's parentage.
And just to point out something that seems to have dropped from the wayside here - THESE AREN'T TRUE CLONES. At least I'm pretty sure of that. Unless they've changed technologies, they implant a magically adjusted nucleus into an egg of ANOTHER individual. That egg has mitochondria which has DNA which has been implicated in gene regulation (look it up if you're interested).
A TRUE clone would have both clonal nucular (thank the FSM we can say that in jest) and mitochondrial DNA. This is close, but not cigar sharing material.
That's just pointing out the current flaws and limitations of the technology. It is not addressing why people would want to do it, which is the question I was answering.
Not a clone! Not!
Happy to concede that the process is less than perfect and the use of the term "clone" might be misleading. It does depend on your definition of clone.
I'd love a clone of my current pet dogs to share with my infant son. (They'll be dead before he's old enough to appreciate them). Then again I also look forward to the adventure with a new dog (if my son grows up liking dogs), and I wouldn't mortgage the house to clone my dog.
But what's the point of cloning a companion animal?
- Familiarity. Similar looks will bring out similar emotions. (Reminds me of a couple of guys I know that dumped or were dumped by one girlfriend only to find another that looked and acted almost identically)
- Similar temperament. Eliminates non-environmental variance. Same breed, perhaps similar inherent tendencies and trainability
- Similar to having the animal's offspring - you feel like you have a part of them
- Curiosity. To see how similar or different the new dog actual is to what you remember of the old
- Inability to accept or deal with the loss of the pet
I STILL don't think the LHC will kill us all but the fact we're debating it says something.
People are still debating evolution.
Hell the flat earth society is still debating the shape of the earth despite an abundance of evidence to the contrary. Anything can be debated, especially when you're willing to ignore the facts, twist the truth, and push your agenda
For f' sake, whoever modded this flamebait needs their head read. Read the summary. A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER has done extensive testing and both SUBJECTIVE and OBJECTIVE (quantitative) tests. He use to like Mac notebooks, but the latest crop doesn't suit a pro photographer. What do the fanbois want before they'll consider an opinion they don't like? A goddamn scientific study?
For the last time Flamebait does not simply mean someone's said something that you disagree with or find inconvenient. Grow up people!
I, too, used to use my real name. Then, time went on, I grew up, mellowed, and suddenly the political screeds I penned in the heady days of youth looked like, um, really bad ideas. And in one case, I was a complete sanctimonious prick and was correctly called out for it...
I've been on pseudonyms ever since.
It appears you've given up on integrity. That's what you learn from being wrong in your youth??? And you're proud of this?
How about learning to stand by what you say, or admitting you're wrong. Much better approach than continuing to say things you can't later justify but doing it anonymously. You're a true AC.
Basically; I figure coal power kills more people every year than Chernobyl accident did period, and it bypasses our nuclear bombings in less than five years.
The flip side of your statistic is that it only took one nuclear accident to kill the same number of people as all the coal power plants in the world kill in a year.
It's a bit like running FSCK on your brain, in an attempt to recover data from bad sectors.
That's not the first time FSCK has been used to justify marijuana use, nor the first time FSCK has been compared to marijuana. You're a sysadmin aren'tchya!?
Backward compatibility. Sure you can run 32 bit apps on 64 bit....unless they're drivers...or contain 16 bit code....or rely on 16 bit code...or don't play well with WOW64....etc. There are businesses today that rely on hardware and software that simply won't run on a 64 bit system without a rewrite.
One other suspect. I have been trying to work out what I had eaten each time I've had my symptoms. Cherries and plums are one possibility. Each time I've had a problem I had eaten one, or both of thse. Tuna is another possibility, but less likely because I don't think each time I've had symptoms I'd eaten Tuna. I initially thought I had food poisoning after going through about 4 small cans for lunch one day. Bread and wheat products don't seem to make a difference at all, and my Ign/Iga is low, so it's not likely to be coeliacs.

There. Do I get my free zero-G flight now?
Fatal parse error in article: Innovate and 1st person shooter in same sentence.

We watched and applauded as OLPC began only to watch in dismay and tears as they project allowed itself to be taken over from within.
Perhaps YOU did but WE did no such thing. Toughen up, princess!
You've preordered it and you're happy? Did you actually receive one also or are you just happy with the specs?
If he's happy with his pre-order, boy do I have a deal for him! For a limited time only you can pre-order this bridge

Dive-bombing? This isn't Pearl Harbour the movie. Try "highly elliptical" orbit, and "close approach" or "close proximity". This is /. not 5th grade.

Bah, don't worry. I'm sure Keanu will do a fine job as Decker.
And here's a picture of him getting ready for his upcoming role or should that be roll:

That would explain why every time I pay council rates I itch!
