I'm all for paying money for the music I download. But let these guys asking for my money, first decide who's gonna get it.
I'm certainly not in a mood to pay every tom, dick and harry who wants to jump on this bandwagon asking for cash!
If I pay for a song when I download it (ie. thru iTunes and the like) then I certainly don't want to be taxed for downloading something I already paid for. Then it is for the songwriters to negotiate with the recording industry dinosaurs to get their piece of the pie.
If you choose to post about things that could be deemed to harm the interests of your employer
Read the comment completely before replying. If you did not understand the meaning, let me explain it to you. When I say deemed to harm the interests of the employer, I'm not talking about the personal tastes or likes and dislikes, political or otherwise, of your boss. I refer to the interests of the organization you work for.
And I'm not talking about "slander" here. Slander means "words falsely spoken that damage the reputation of another". Thats is straight illegal. And if a blogger does that, he's being an asshole, period. What I'm speaking about is... if a blogger posts something about his company's internal policies and makes a comment on it, then it could be deemed as a breach of security coz the blogger's essentially talking about something that's confidential between the company and its employees. In such a case, the organization has every right to sack the blogger/employee or at least give him a severe reprimand.
Freedom of speech is the most abused of all rights.
I agree with your opinions though. Only thing is that you've confused two issues here.
If you can't talk about work, or if you're afraid of being fired when a coworker surfs by... Why bother with a homepage or blog at all?
Your homepage or a blog you contribute to, is just your voice in the online world. If you choose to post about things that could be deemed to harm the interests of your employer, then the employer is well within his rights to fire you. That is true in the real world as well. For example, you go to a bar and after a few rounds, start criticizing your boss or his policies at the workplace. If,by chance, a lackey of your boss happens to be around, you can bet your bottom dollar that a pink slip would welcome you in the office the next time you go there. Thats pretty much what happens when you post certain things on your blog. The only difference being... the content on your blog stays on as 'evidence' to incriminate you beyond doubt.
but, in practice, there are far too many useless, egotistical homepages
But those are just a reflection of the personality of the website's owner. It takes all kinds to make up the real world. Likewise, it takes all kinds of websites to make up the online world.
The analogy of a website being the online home of a person is very valid. You'll see so many garishly decorated homes in real life... while a few tastefully done, organized and neat houses. That does not mean one should go around criticizing the unorganized, tackily decorated ones. Its a matter of personal taste. After all, thats why they're referred to as personal websites.
Smartness has very little to do with taste!
Blogs, on the other hand, are like standing on the porch and talking aloud... airing views... sharing news.
I quite agree that Yahoo! has a great system to filter out spam to the Bulk Mail folder. I've almost never had a spam mail delivered to my Yahoo! Inbox.
Using custom filters in Yahoo! hampers the spam filtering mechanism and spam does manage to elude the Bulk Mail folder and ends up in some other folder.
Attachments will not cause a mail to be filtered out. In your case, probably the person you sent the image used the whitelist feature in Hotmail and your mail id wasn't in it. Or perhaps a custom filter caused your mail (with attachment) to be delivered to the Junk Mail folder.
Spam filters, firewalls, pop-up blockers are not perfect. They cannot ever claim to be (unless of course you have tiny little people inside your computer filtering out spam or pop-ups). They work by casting their nets wide. We have to grant them some leeway. Always check before clearing your Junk/Bulk mail folders so that you don't miss some important mail that might have got caught in the net! And be regular in cleaning your junk/bulk mail folders or you'll have a huge list of mails to scan before you're sure that none of your regular mail gets deleted alongwith the spam.

I don't think there are any restrictive sales practices being used over the web by vendors. US has had a head start over the other countries as far as setting up shops on the web is concerned. So, naturally one would see a lot more US centric stores on the web than say a country like Hungary. But then, its upto the other countries to get their acts together.
You say that the local country websites have limited range to offer. So, isn't that more of problem with those local manufacturers then?
I'm from India and I've generally had no problems with buying stuff over the web... though I haven't bought laptops yet.

I believe they have a new ratings system for video games. It rates the games on the basis of the level of violence in the game. e.g. cartoon violence, fantasy violence, intense violence and sexual violence. This will come into effect from Sept. 15.
I wonder why Thai authorities could not do the same instead of imposing curfew.
Anyways, I don't think the curfew is gonna work. It never does! After all, the forbidden fruit is always the most desirable... and the best way to ensure that children do something is to disallow it!
This is a neat thing. I guess they're using it or have at least tried it out at a few other places around the world.
I had read in a newspaper report some months back that authorities in Mumbai, India were planning to install this kind of 'travelator' to link two of the most important railway stations in Mumbai, Churchgate and CST. But I don't remember seeing any action on it since then.
Btw, I would like to advise the travelator operators in Paris to hand out barf bags to people travelling on these contraptions. *heh*

Obviously... multiplication isn't your strong point!

Real World : a place where I can actually punch a person in the face for making a smart alecky comment! :-P
Where, then, would I post pictures of my dogs, cats and freckly nephews and nieces? ;-)

If that doesn't constitute butt-kissing, I don't know what does
Maybe it does! But if he didn't do that, he would've had the RIAA after his butt, sooner rather than later!
In any case, you seem to have missed the sarcasm in " great anti-piracy website"
Apple takes it's (big) cut and then the Artist's (frequently RIAA affiliated) label takes most of the rest.
On the contrary, a big cut of the $0.99 goes to the RIAA while the credit card companies swallow the rest. Steve Jobs says so.

Well maybe if the post would've been about a satellite being shut down by a tanker truck, I might've sat up and taken notice.

When those bugs crawl out from under the rug... that's when you start feeling the pinch... quite literally... coz they're nasty bugs that bite.
