  1. A good idea on TiVo Basic · · Score: 4, Interesting

The subscription requirement has always turned me off from getting Tivo. Why would I pay for a program guide and title searching when i have this inlcuded in my satellite/digicable service already. Basic sounds like a good idea for people who just want the hardware.

  2. Well Actually ... on iTunes Music Store sells 275,000 Tracks in 18 Hours · · Score: 1

    It does.

  3. no worries on High Density CDs · · Score: 2, Informative

But if you're putting programs or even DivX movies on a CD, believe me, you want that error-correcting information.

Which is why you encode your Divx movies not into AVIs, but into OGM ogg file containers. Not only do they have error correction, so you can use 800 meg mode 2 cds, but they have multiple audio track, multiple subtitle track, and chapter support. Divx 5 with Vorbis audio, subtitles and chapters, and you got near dvd quality on one 800 meg cd. Its great, and not used nearly as much as it should be.

  6. two different services on SBC Considering Buying DirecTV · · Score: 1

the switch away from your cable company deal isnt as appealing as it might seem. I have comcast cable in my area, and it sucks. Thats why we switched to DirecTv years ago, and are quite happy. However, for internet, we have comcast cable internet, and it works quite well. As bad as Comcast may be, its cable internet is far better than the DSL around here. Guess who's dsl that is? Yep, SBC.

  7. Advice on Ask Kevin Mitnick · · Score: 4, Funny

Then wait for a secret box that decrypts everything to come along, and hire your former best friend to steal it for you.
    Simple as that

  8. Article mistake, not credit cards on Russian Student Arrested For Revealing DirecTV Secrets · · Score: 2

The student, identified as Igor Serebryany, 19, of Los Angeles, was accused of sending over the Internet hundreds of sensitive documents describing details about DirecTV's latest "access card" technology - credit-card devices controlling which of the company's 11 million U.S. subscribers can view particular channels.

The P4 and all other DirecTV and Dish access cards are Smartcards, not magnetic strip cards like credit cards. The Amex Blue and one Visa card are also smart cards, but credit cards in general are not, and Blue still has a mag strip. Sattelite access cards do not use mag strips.

While you provided excellent examples in the UK, there is no need to look any further than US satellite services. Directv and Echostar both use smart cards that have been hacked since the beginning. When one gets swapped out for a new one, that one gets hacked in a matter of months. Nothing new.

  13. cable vs dsl on DSL Rising · · Score: 2

i live in a town that has both, but dsl was available first, so thats what most of my friends have. i have cable on the other hand. The one advantage I find is that on DSL when you are uploading, your downstream gets the crap kicked out of it, whereas on cable I can u/l and d/l at the same time no problem. All my friends on DSL have this problem, its SBC aDsl for those interested.

  18. Great, now just another domain everyone will need. on Kid-Safe Domain Created · · Score: 3, Insightful

Every company is going to be forced to get a kids domain now, or be left out of this "new internet". What if i want to include a google box to search my own kid site, or link to current headlines at CNN? I can't because these are .com, and obviously not safe enough. Big companies can afford it, by why should everyone be forced to create new, possibly edited domains(cause they can only like to kids domains now too), just to be a viable part of the internet
