I remember commercials in the movie theaters at least 40 years ago. I would be very surprised if they didn't have them in the 1920s.

My mom used to have an olde record player, and one of her records was of a very olde radio show (probably 30s, but I might have been late 20s), and it was sponsered by Oxidol.

I don't think Tivo ever automatically skipped commercials. If you're watching recorded or time-delayed you can FF past the ads, or use the undocumented 30 second skip (don't know if the newest models have that), but you still have to manually hit the button, and might go deaf from sound before you can.

When you are watching a action packed movie, and have the surround sound turned up as high as you can comfortably stand without pissing off the neighbors, and a *BLARING* commercial pops on that doesn't retreat on the volume, and you're scrambling to find the remote while you can't even hear the voice in your head, it needs to stop

The flip side is, you have the sound down low enough that the commercials don't blow out your eardrums. The show returns, and until you turn the volume way up, you can't hear a word anyone says.

I have my money in two banks. One is a B&M bank that I picked in prehistoric (or at least pre-online banking) times because it had branches near home & work. Also, it's been great for customer service. My other bank is ING Direct, because its interest was far higher than the B&M. I only have a tiny amount at my credit union. There's no real reason to use them. Their interest is comparable to the B&M, and they have very few ATMs.

  24. Re:Use CASH on Credit Cards That Think They Are Gadgets · · Score: 1

Too bad. I always swipe a credit card no matter how small the transaction, because it's faster than cash. A lot of stores don't even make you sign for small transactions these days. I also don't have to deal with bagfuls of loose change in my pockets. I hate waiting behind people in line while the cashier fumbles for and then doles out a dozen little physical tokens to each one of them. (Although I admit that's not nearly as infuriating as when I see someone start to pull out a checkbook after the final total gets rung up.)

Faster than cash? I don't think so! Usually, when I'm at the grocery store, and the line slows to a crawl, it's because of someone swiping their card. Best case, they have to hit "credit or debit", type the amount, and answer "Are you sure?", which is slower than pulling out the damn cash. More often, they don't know what to punch, or they try paying from an overdrawn account, or any of a thousand things that can go wrong.
