A few weeks ago, we had a major storm that knocked out the power for a good part of the city. Most places were closed, and one of the few that were open had a big "Cash-Only" sign on it.
I've learned to be paranoid about saving, even before Windows. Once, in the mid 80s when I was still a newbie, I was working on a program, typing like crazy. I hadn't saving for hours and the network connection went down. If you heard a loud scream about that time, it was probably me. Ever since, I've never typed for too long without saving.
There's one hill, near my house, where I don't know if I can get up it until it's too late. Basically, if there's nobody else on it, I'll make it. If there's someone ahead of me and they don't make it, I've lost my momentum, and I probably won't make it either. Wonder how a self-driving car would handle that.
My mom doesn't have one of those new-fangled computers and doesn't need it. Except for all the stuff I've ordered online for her, and the occasional account I've set up so she can get some discount or other.
On the other side of the coin, I've found that I hate working from home in the summer, and enjoy it in the winter. The winter, with -40C -- well, the reasons are obvious. The summer? Well, there's a lot to see on the way to work, it's pleasant and nice to get out.
I haven't worked from home, but I'm sure my opinion of it would be based on the season. Winter snow and ice, great. Summer, with no central AC, not so great.
If your region loses electricity for any significant period of time your local gas station won't be pumping any liquid fuel. OTOH during the last hurricane evacuation from Houston - bumper-to-bumper traffic for 16 hours - Priuses made it through due to regenerative braking while liquid fuel vehicles ran dry. So there's that.
A prius isn't a true electric car. Last week, I had a power outage, and true enough, the gas station near my house was out. I ended up driving to my GF's on the other side of town. I MIGHT have made it there in a non-Tesla electric car - barely if I started with a full charge. I didn't even think about it in my trusty gas car.
Generally the passwords I reuse are the ones that don't matter much. If someone cracks my/. pw, they might have the access to several unimportant accounts, but not my main email or banking accounts, all of which are unique.
Not only THIS, but even on Netflix, binge watching a series, the constant dramatic-crisis-leading-to-a-black-cut-and-back-to-the-scene-not-quite-as-it-was every 4-5 minutes showing where the commercial was "supposed" to be is highly annoying. It interrupts the story and wastes valuable story telling time. Agents of Shield and Once Upon A Time are recent series I have noted with this issue.
I've noticed that. Often I start reaching for my remote before realizing "This is Netflix! I don't have to FF past the ads".
It's not news that MS would release Win10 on July 29. It's news that Win10 would be usable by July 29. From what I've read, there was considerable doubt on that.
Even Netflix streaming is starting to show ads now, granted they are only for Netflix produced shows.
So far I'm not bothered by Netflix's ads. As long as they don't interrupt or delay the show I want to watch, I don't care. As for Hulu, I've never had Plus, but free Hulu isn't worth it for free. The ads, last time I saw it, were as bad or worse than network TV despite their relative shortness.
The thing people are avoiding isn't "television" (video dramas, comedies, etc). The thing people are starting to avoid is "television" (getting those shows via cable companies). I don't think any predicted the death of video as a form of entertainment.
Absolutely. I watch plenty of TV, much of it from the networks. But I'm watching more and more on Netflix, and now that they're creating content themselves, the old networks will only get smaller.
Talking about ads - the other day I was watching some news show live. They switched to a commercial break, so I hit pause and did something else for 10 minutes. I got back and FFd past 5 minutes, they talked for maybe 3 minutes, and started another commercial break! Reducing ads my asss!
The other day, I was driving on a narrow street in an older area and had to pull over to give the car going the other way room. My mom said something about the narrow street, and I commented that it was probably wide enough when it was built for the horses.
They do the same thing as a human? Treat it like a four way stop.
I'm confused. Will they do what humans do, or treat it as a four-way stop?

Truth: Uranus is (sometimes) visible with the naked eye.

Yes, I've read that it's sometimes visible. However, few people will admit to staring at Uranus.
and maybe if you stand on a public street (as long as it really is a publicly owned street).
Unless you get shut down for noise violations.

Nah, I'm too busy trying to get the horse in the barn.

Even houses that don't have garages, requiring outdoor chargers, make ownership less attractive.
Yup! I have a mental picture of a loong extension cord running from my driveway to my house. Not very appealing.

OTOH, I don't even remember who my first grade teacher was.
I've been told I should quit comparing Congresspeople to gorillas and chimps. The apes find it very offensive.

Win 8.1 isn't too terrible, as long as I can avoid Metro. But I'm still going to upgrade. Not sure if I'd upgrade from 7 though.

Would you prefer $20 or $30 per month for ad-free Hulu Plus?
No, because the ads on Free Hulu were so bad that I can't even think about Hulu without barfing. OTOH, I'd have no problem paying that for Netflix.
Hulu Plus is a paid service.

As long as I can still google for "alternative search engines" and still get results, I have no problem with them. ;)

I find it ironic that Ask would do that without, er, asking. Clearly, it's questionable behavior.
As long as my laptop and my desktop don't go pfft at the same time as Dropbox, Onecloud, and Google Drive, I'm fine.
