I wrote a paper on Environmental Impacts of Technology Waste for anyone interested. It's a general paper discussing the issues from an environmental point of view, rather than a pure geek or business point of view... though written by a geek.
It's a general read, no serious background needed, not to technical. Just a general FYI I did for a gen-ed biology class last semeseter.
Default
installation doesn't include many functions; you have to download additional features via the Extensions Manager. Will not load ActiveX and VBScript; this prevents certain kinds of attacks, but also disables the normal functions of some sites.
Emphasis mine.
Now explain this? It's got boatloads more functionality (find as you type, tabbed browsing, popup blocker, livemarks [0.9+], etc etc.)... but it 'doesn't include many functions'.
Now how does IE rank? Please don't tell me feature rich. That's like calling is secure.:-D
The proportion of critical bugs was also comparable with other software - 33% of the OS X vulnerabilities were "highly" or "extremely" critical
by Secunia's reckoning, compared with 30% for XP Professional and 27% for SLES 8 and just 12% for Advanced Server 3. OS X had the highest proportion of "extremely critical" bugs at 19%.
Emphasis mine.
Were not talking solid numbers, but numbers made by personal opinion. What is 'critical'?
MS can butter up the numbers so none of their holes are 'critical' if they so desire. So can anyone else.
There several reasons why prices won't drop anytime soon:
- Networks expanding. Broadband means more bandwidth per customer. As more people use it, more websites get bulked up for broadband... more bandwidth used... more capacity needed.... then faster networks needed... websites bulk up more... cyclical
- Limited networks in competition. Most people don't have much broadband choice. Theres either cable (one provider), or DSL (if your lucky enough to live in DSL's short range).... soon power companies will join in, but the technology is still up in the air... and it's not cheap to implement, so I'd expect power companies in rural areas may jump in, but in areas where cable/dsl penetrated... doubt it. Most people have 1 broadband option. Lucky people have 2. Satellite is way to expensive for most people.
- It's a package deal. Cable networks sell packages. That's how they operate. Not ala Cart. They like to do services as well. That's why you have basic cable, premimum cable, sports packages, digital cable, HD TV packages, broadband packages etc. That's the business plan.
This must be for blog communities. Not the majority of websites. I can't see any admin asking the CIO "can we have some additional funding to buy a statistical analyzer that looks like sim city".
Must be for bloggers.
Lets see if in this economy (with these gas prices in particular people will part with that much cash.
Mac OS X showed me how great an OS can feel - Smooth slim feel - UI feels right (can't explain it much better than that) - never crashed - software update is nice and elequent, pretty secure. - inexpensive ($129 isn't to bad) - minimal clicks.
Overall: Higher quality, gets my vote every time. Windows is just an inferior product.
I read slashdot *while* having sex.
Then I had to take my hand out of my pants so I could post a witty comment.
I read it, and agree that the web could be better, and they have some great ideas on how to do it...
But some things just drive me nuts, so I decided to sit down and blog it.
If the can't manage to do it, what makes them think the world will do it?
They have always been fans of backwards compatibility... but not in a very fundimental sense.
I'd rather a form control not appear properly to NN3, than a large chunk of the web be unable to view my content.
Just my $0.02
I'll believe it when I see it.
:-D
I've been hearing about this mythical Doom 3 for ages now.
I'm guessing when it finally comes out, expect 1 TB disk space, 512 GB RAM, and a PowerPC G7 (because we all know Apple will dominate with power).
So they may not be good at making nuclear weapons in secret, or diplomatic relations.
But they know their server side technology.

They want parts from your old products (which aren't in production anymore). They will recycle what they can't use.
Comes off as environmentally friendly, and may prevent some of the new laws in the works as well.
But the ultimate thing they want is access to the parts. You help fill their toolbox, they get rid of your garbage.
Emphasis mine.

Hmm... could it be because Rock & Roll with a guy on a CASIO is just awkward?
Ugh, I hated that stuff.
I'd say fine.
But no off hours stuff. If they ask why? Well, I don't have internet access/cellphone/whatever anymore.
A company shouldn't be burning your personal assets (cell phone minutes, bandwidth etc.).
So if they need you to do work, they should be providing the means to do so (that's why companies have offices).
I'd play hardball. Want me to do work? Provide the means.
Want me to be accessible via my cell phone? Reimburse me for the minutes you use.
Simple as that.
Shouldn't have to pay a company to do work for them.
Try a stone tablet and a chissle.
;-)
Proven to last a long time.
Though quite labor intensive. Could employ slaves?
Emphasis mine.

It should be a weapon too.
Well classify the Pentium IV, as a rock, and the G5, as an atomic bomb.
All I know is my dodge neon is like a lawnmower with side doors and a larger gas tank.
As several politicans have said "we are a christian nation"...
and remember: according to the christian beliefs, God created man and woman.
And everything God created is evil and shameful.
The only thing worse than a human breast is a baby or a kitten.
Kid of makes you wonder doesn't it?

I wrote this the other day, if anyone is interested:
It's time for an international standard on Instant Messaging
ha ha ha
Perhaps if you used Open Office and made a spreadsheet, you could have plotted out your financial plan ahead of time.
Oh well, they deserve it.
Remember when people perfered DOS 2.11 over version 3. because it was lighter?
I'd say it's still just as slim... just on scale with modern computing.

Apple's new G5 is just to sexy.
;-)
I think the Heat Sink isn't the only thing getting wet
I'm drooling.
The Palm OS features a very prominent Todo list. It's been a focal point (deserving a button) for years (I think about 10 now).
Didn't the Newton have one too?
My reasons:
- Slow bloated feel
- Awkward UI
- Buggy
- Insecure, always virus concerns
- Expensive
- Everything takes 10 clicks.

- Smooth slim feel

Perhaps.

But it's working so far
People seem to get really upset and mad when they smell burnt testicle.
;-)
Perhaps now some penis oven mitts?
Some say this heat thing is a problem... I say kill the sperm. My laptop is my birth control method
