  2. Secret Code in Zero Wing on Videogame Character Threatens National Security? · · Score: 2, Funny

It's really Japanese video game programmers whom the US military should be afraid of. "Somebody set up us the bomb" read backwards is "Bomb the US, upset somebody!" Looks like they are using a false pretense of a bad translation to hide secret code messages to their allies.

  4. I got a letter from Rogers here in Ontario, Canada on Comcast Targets Internet "Abusers" · · Score: 1

We would like to advise you that there has been excessive usage on your Rogers Hi-Speed Internet account which is in violation of our end user agreement with you and in particular, your agreement not to use the service in a way that creates an unusually large burden on our network.

Rogers has a responsibility to ensure that all of its customers experience a high quality of service and performance when using Rogers Hi-Speed Internet. Your usage consumes a disproportionate share of our network's resources which has a negative impact on network performance. In fact, you fall within the category of less than 1% of our residential customers whose usage exceeds that of the average customer by well over 2000%.

Please be advised that it is important that your account's usage returns to reasonable levels. Unfortunately, unless your usage pattern significantly changes starting in the next two days, we will have no choice but to suspend your Internet account for a period of seven days.

According to my logs, I was moving about 2.5 GB, on average, combined up & down. I was surprised that they considered this above average. (If that's 2000% of the average user's use, the average user uses about 150 megs per day. They should be lucky the average user only uses that much.)

A friend of mine & networking insider told me that according to Rogers higher-ups, they do not go after servers (even though they tell you not to run them) -- but "you better not show up on their Top X bandwidth hogs list."

It sucks that I have to guess at what unlimited access really means. Then again, if these companies had true unlimited service, I probably couldn't get a cable modem for $40 Canadian monthly.

Yahooka.com, a marijuana activism site, is obviously a takeoff on Yahoo, and they even provide directory-based search engine services. To date, I think Yahoo has left them alone. I suppose it's because they're a not-for-profit website though.

  6. Technical on USPTO Grants CA Lawyer Domain-Naming Patent · · Score: 1

I think the problem isn't so much with the number of patents, it's the lack of technical expertise on the part of the courts that allows these sorts of patents to get... well, patented in the first place. For the legal system to survive down the road, there is going to have to be a "tech court" where the judge, lawyers et al have concrete knowledge of internet and technology issues. But I'm not the first one who said that, by any means.

  11. Re:DRM is the old Internet. on Digital Rights Managment Year in Review · · Score: 1

DRM doesn't do anything but hurt the people who want to use the music and video legally.

If I am legally entitled to own music that I can't copy to my car player, I am being hurt. Steve Jobs said that piracy is not a technology issue, it's an ethics issue. Whenever you have a bitstream, it's possible to copy it; making protection schemes is just going to piss everybody off. There's no sense crippling the technology and ruining it for everyone, even the people who don't steal.

Squarepusher's albums are top-notch but his live performance is relatively lacking. I was disappointed too when I went to see him, much more impressed with his long time opener Luke Vibert. All the Pusher did was hook up a bass to some really crazy effects, and played random notes.

  13. Re:And. . . on Debian World Domination Plan · · Score: 1

Gentoo and Debian have their merits. I like Gentoo's ability to build from source, but sometimes that is a disadvantage, such as on a slow computer (took KDE over a week to compile on my P233 with 64 megs :). Debian is *gasp* a little easier to use, and has more packages and is more supported by the linux community. But both are really good choices.

That is Code Red, which accounts for 99.99% of the exploit attempts. It's gone down a lot though; used to be 10 a day, now it's less than 1 a day on average.

Using the Shoutcast DSP (dunno about Odd or Ice), you can specify the soundcard as your audio source, not Winamp. Then, all you need to do is change your recording source in the windows mixer to "What-U-Hear" (not all sound drivers have support for this). Then you can capture anything that opens a windows wave handle. The quality will probably suffer a bit.
