It's compatible with the BB client, but has far more features and includes some basic MRTG graphs.

I have yet to find an all in one integrated open source solution for monitoring (cpu, processes, port reachability), alerts (email, sms, etc). The closest I've found is JFFNMS, but writing alert rules and such is difficult to say the least.

While on the subject, if it's not too terribly off-topic, what do people use to bill based on network usage (MRTG, RRD). Both claim that you should NOT bill off of that information, but I have yet to find any other open source solution.

If you have a Java application server set up (like Tomcat - which can only take a few minutes to do)

Tomcat must have progressed quite a bit in the last 5 years then. I was supporting some jsp-writing devs on an Apache/Tomcat setup in 2000something, and even finding docs on the correct connector for the two, or even *choosing* from the 80 available connectors is a nightmare.

Yes, you could run Tomcat on port 80, with no Apache, but I seem to recall that Tomcat specifically leaves out much of the functionality that Apache does natively- perhaps lock something down by IP, etc.

Once you've gone through the nightmare of setting this up properly, you then get to learn Ant to make your WARs. While I did find Ant appealing/nice/whatever, it's quite a bit more complex than you're making it up to be to be serving up .jsp.

Compared to the horror that can be involved in compiling and configuring compatible versions of apache and php required for particular PHP applications, this is a dream.

Again, Tomcat must have come a long way since then, or you should be using FreeBSD.

In early 2006, a TiVo is coming out that allows this. CableCARD is what you desire. A dual tuner CableCARD TiVo will be released that will be compatible with all (U.S., not sure about the rest of you) cable/digital cable standards, QAM. I can't seem to dig up pictures of it now, but a prototype was shown at the most recent CES.

I'm sure that for these, the digital stream will be recorded directly to hard drive like the DirecTV units do. The current HD TiVo does with over-the-air ATSC broadcasts already.

First off, It's not the TV that needs to be "built from kit", it's the tuner. Why try to build a projection device when it's likely much less expensive and simpler to just tune and strip broadcast flag from a signal?

    That said-

Grill me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of the Broadcast Flag is that it exists to prevent copyrighted material from being "ripped" to something such as a PC's hard drive.

I have an HDTV, and an HDTiVo. Both obey the broadcast flag and encryption (HDCP) via its digital interface- HDMI. When the FCC/whoever decides to "broadcast-flagamaphone" a show, I will see it just as it's intended, in all of its HD glory.

If however I were using the Component/Analog outputs from my tuner (TiVo), the broadcast flag will force the TiVo to downres it to 480p on the analog connections, but it may remain in 720p/1080i/1080p on its digital path.

Yes, very early HD adoptors with analog-only inputs will have to get new sets- but all sets prior to about 2 years ago didnt support 720P as n input or display format, so they're likely going to do this anyhow.

So who's hurt here and what are we whining about?

The DishPVR doesn't even have a season pass. When I was watching a a few minutes behind "real time", when the Dish PVR has to record the next show, it would not allow me to continue watching my timeshifted show- it simply forces you to start watching the new program.

This also happened when I simply went into the MENU. (Similar to TiVo button).

I'm a TiVo owner for years. A few months ago Dish Network had a "deal" to their current subscribers that offered their own PVR for $25 shipping + $5/month. Since their PVR has Optical out for Dolby Digital, I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Well, Dish Network's PVR is useless. You can't even go into the main menu without it stopping recording what you're watching. I had it plugged in for an hour and it went back in the box to be shipped back.

Dish Network also has their own brand of HD PVR, but I beleive it runs the same OS as above, and is pretty horrible.

If this 2wire box has season passes and works similarly to a TiVo, it could be a good thing. It would, however, need an ATSC tuner (or two) to "compete" with the HR10-250 DirecTV TiVo. Otherwise, there's no way to receive/record local channels in HD in the vast majority of markets in the US.
