While I agree with you, it might be because of grammar differences between two languages. I speak both dutch and english and I notice that I use more comma's in a dutch sentence than I use in english. (Which I understand permits only one comma per sentence but I might be wrong.)
In a typical FreeBSD installation you make the root partition (/) quite small, these days 128MB to 256MB. This is to make the chance that when something happens that could damage your hard disk, the chance of it damaging your root and leave your system unbootable is minimal. This makes the chance that you can get to single user mode and run fsck on the damaged partitions bigger. In FreeBSD 2.x and 3.x the default root was even smaller and this made upgrading to 4.x in the general make buildworld sense nigh impossible, this might help the people with legacy machines to upgrade.
This whole article feels like a *OSS* is dying troll. This part is especially good: Linux is a form of Unix, like FreeBSD was
So Bill thinks that FreeBSD is dead or he thinks it isn't a form of UNIX. It might also be a referral to the AT&T lawsuit and that the BSD's codebase was officially cleaned.
Ah well, just some random observations. Hope they made sense, sleep deprevation can do that to you.
I halfly agree with this, I can only concentrate on things when I smoked a joint AND really want to do it. But then I get it done and done well.;) If I don't want to do the task, I better not do it while high cause I won't even start with it.
First of all, I love my cube, I bought it because of exactly this reason. When I ask people what game I should play on the X-Box, the only answer I get is 'Halo'. Well I played halo now and to me it just seems as YAFPS. (Yet another FPS)
So now I bought a cube with metroid prime and I'm loving the thing. MP rules so much, just the exploring and the platform action it retained makes it so much better than a plain old shooter.
Further more I got super smash bros. melee which must be the most fun fighting game I've ever played. Simple to play, hard to master and very good gameplay.
And now I got Super Monkey Ball 2 (from SEGA) which is probably one of the most addictive games I have ever played.
I used to get bored with a game far before I came close to finishing it but these games just keep me playing even when I finished the game.
I can't seem to find anything like that on the X-Box or the PS2, all the games on that side of the fence feel like I've played them before.
For example, if someone kept a supply a joints in his desk, and smoked one or two during his lunch hour in the bathroom, and your noticed, would you mention something?
Ok I'm a dutch tech worker who does smoke a joint before/during work every so often and I think there is nothing wrong with this cause I can do my work allmost as well as when I'm sober, it takes the edge of those uber stressfull days. But on the other side there are people who can't work on weed but this depends on the person. So I wouldn't report him to anyone but if his performance would suffer I would talk to him about it... And you can't compare weed smoking to child porn cause smoking weed is a totally victimless crime. (Well here it isn't even a crime...)
Actually I can't think of coming back to windows as my primary workstation platform. Not because I don't like MS. (which I don't but that is not the reason) The real reason why I prefer a UNIX workstation is for all the apps/features windows doesn't have like ssh-agent, icewm, mutt, x over ssh forwarding, ultimate customization, powerfull CLI and powerfull CLI apps, standards compliance (I so HATE developing web apps for IE, it chokes so badly on the simplest CSS) and other things. Sure no normal to moderatly advanced user would understand my setup and its not userfriendly. But the thing that matters is that it is ME friendly and windows doesn't do that for me. And before anyone asks, I'm a sysadmin/coder who doesn't need much more besides mplayer, xmms, gkrellm, (g)vim, mozilla, aterm, nethack, freeciv and the occasional zsnes session. I don't need all those state of the art games because I'd rather sit in the pub than buy/play games.
P.S. I'm posting this using mozilla on FreeBSD 4.8;)
Well, maybe because we're not all that stereotype. I mean do you think that everyone here comforms to the 'nerd' stereotype? I think there would be a lot of people here that are skilled with computers but do not comform to that, and maybe they want to lose the stereotype which goes with computers...
If we give a thank you for everything that came out of the US in the last 100 years, will you give a thank you for everything that came out of europe the last 1000 years or so?
While I might agree that the lunux file layout is a chaos. (Alltho that depends on the distro)The UNIX system is infinately superior to how windows makes it... In UNIX land the notion of seperating bins docs and the OS should be seperated is very old. It usually does it even better as all binaries are in the bin directory, and then depending how important they are for the system (or if they've installed by the user) are put in/bin/usr/bin or/usr/local/bin respectivaly. Same as for documentation and which should be in share. (with the same usr hierarchy as the bins) Further more the whole concept of mounting makes it easier to change your filesystem if you notice that directory X is getting too large but you don't want them to change location in the FS. So what is the problem?
Well it might be like that, but we shouldn't give up trying to get answers because we think we're not intelligent enough for it...
For example, a few centuries ago we where sure that the earth was flat, that the earth was the middle of everything and a million of other things we found to be false and more complicated.
And then there is the theory that we only use 10% of our brain. And it took us 'only' a few thousand years to get to use that. So maybe what looks too hard for humanity now, might be childs play for humanity a few generations later, or maybe even the next.
And in the meantime we have enough problems for us to bang our heads against... (Like how to get the gros of the people to actually use their brain at all instead of thinking that the TV knows best...)
is the one in that family guy episode where 'Shatner' does fiddler on the roof... 'A fiddler on the bla bla bla...' -shatner trembles- 'KAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
pkgdb -F (fix some deps) portupgrade -ra (compile compile compile) go away (to sleep or something)
and when you come back everything is on the newest version and even better.... everything is compiled from source =)
And what's so hard about upgrading FreeBSD's base system? just type
cvsup -g -L 2 supfile make buildworld make buildkernel mergemaster -P make installkernel make installworld mergemaster reboot
and thats all, you now should have a freshly upgraded freebsd box, OK I admit, if you come from redhat/mandrake land all those commands might be a bit scary but I'm a console kiddie anyway...
Well, I for one would love a phone/pda combination because then I'd have an option to SSH from my phone. Granted I won't use it often, but the ability to try and troubleshoot a server while I don't have to leave the place (bar/club/whatever) I'm at.
Trust me people that are on call would love these...
We have the same here in amsterdam, especially with english speaking people.(Keep in mind that I don't hold them fully responsible for this) In my fav pub I talk english all the time becaus the a big percentage of the people there don't speak dutch, just english. They want to learn dutch but it's hard for them to learn because dutch is not the easiest language to learn, and on top of that most dutch peole I know speak english quite well and rather speak english to them than try and decipher their (still) bad dutch. But we have other groups not speaking dutch (mostly maroccans and turks) who are getting a much harder time because of it as maroccan or turkish isn't really a common second language here...
hahahah, yah me 2, I read this and my first thought was 'wtf did they do this _AGAIN_'. I mean what is up with so many of my kinsmen and dominoes. Ah well, bet it's the same thing as what makes my kinsmen listen to crappy music, follow their herding instinct, make them watch terrible game shows which go on allmost as long as I live (FUCKING LINGO!#$!@) and a load of other stupid shite.
Oops, that's a dutch mistake like the AC said allready. One learns something new every day... ;)

Thanks for the information.
Someone mod the parent up if only for enlightening me
Don't know, we'll be destroyed 5 minutes before we know...

the answer to all of it is 42
Ringtones, THE way to get your music out there if you're a mediocre musician with no originality at all...
After all, did you ever hear an original ringtone...?
I agree here, on FreeBSD it is very hard tho:
/usr/ports/multimedia/mplayer && make install
I have to *TYPE*:
cd
man, even the most '3l33t' of hackers would find this hard
is the one in that family guy episode where 'Shatner' does fiddler on the roof...
;)
'A fiddler on the bla bla bla...'
-shatner trembles-
'KAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
Anyway I rather liked it
