He says that only pages google returns are getting hit. This only means that google is the only one to actually return those pages. It is perfectly reasonable the MSN has pages that it doesn't return but might use in future crawls. Maybe it realizes the pages don't exist and therefor doesn't return them but tries a couple times to see if the page comes back.

As for pages showing up after someone searches them, maybe they spider specific sites that are searched for that it doesn't have. It's called lazy loading and has been around forever.

Maybe MS is benchmarking itself against google, though I'm sure if they did it with any serious amount of queueries google would complain about the bandwidth hit.

There's some truth in what you say about MS. They offer a lot of nice benefits like free soda, pool tables etc. that make working late not so horrible. but I wouldn't say they specifically encourange socializing to keep you there longer, in fact most of my co-workers only really worked late because they came in late, and they would usually work really late from home not the office. That was my last group. The previous ones were more structured in their time schedules, more 10-6.

Have you been to Microsoft before? They have a wonderful corporate campus and a unique corporate culture. Everyone is very friendly and sociable, as well the campus is setup to allow socializing as well there are many recreational activities through the halls, including a number of classic arcade machines.

This is in contrast to when I worked for Lincoln Laboratory, where it was built in the 50's and is only recently being renovated. The culture is also reminescent of the 50's with most of my co-workers being old enough to be my parents.

I think one of the desires of anyone should be to strive for a work environment they enjoy going to everyday and remains to be 'so very cool' as long as they are there. You may not like the words but the sentiment is still valid.

I think one of the productivity killers is just how sweet some companies/campuses are. I've interned at microsoft three times now and I always found it hard to concentrate because the whole experience of being there was so very cool. I'm not diagnosed ADHD though as a tech geek I'm probably it to some extent, and being in that environment made it hard for me to buckle down and concentrate.

I'm not saying that this should be removed from the companies, cause it's the major appeal of some places, but it's definetly something to keep in mind for any particular employee I think.

My twist was this though, use it as a means for long distance couples or even just people you care about to keep in touch in a different way. Part of the setup in my system would also include a camera system at one of your windows. Maybe a camera in each corner looking out. Then someone with another virtual window could 'dial' up your view. Imagine if you were seperated from your family for a while, but you could still have a view into the back yard of your house. And your spouse could have a view into the world you see outside your normal window.

  22. Re:the point is? on Microsoft's Midlife Crisis · · Score: 1

No. The point is that if people see a $1B difference from a previous year, they won't look at why, they will just pull out. Sometimes profit drops are bad, sometimes they aren't, but in situations when they aren't, educating stock holders rarely works, so MS's attempting to make that $1B smaller by reducing the number of expenditures they make. I would bet that this is all temporary until things stabilize and then they will give the benefits back in some form or fashion.

  23. Don't forget about the $1B on Microsoft's Midlife Crisis · · Score: 3, Interesting

MS needs to make up for a $1B loss they will take over the next year. I forget the exact reason for it, but it's nothing special, they made some acquisitions and some such that gave them higher profits previously and those are now going away, it's natural and to be expected.

The problem is stock holders will see $1B less and think the company is going under and freak and sell, despite any amount of education MS tries. Companies that have had similar things happen and tried the education route found it didn't work out.

So MS is choosing to reduce the $1B as it showson paper, part of this is to not spend as much money, hence some of the cut backs.

And while there might be cut backs the benefits offered by Microsoft are pretty damn amazing. It's like saying a rich kid is going into poverty because there dad took back on of there 4 mansions from the kid. The employees are still pretty nice off.
