  1. MS Coders on Software Engineering at Microsoft · · Score: 1

A friend of mine grew up near Redmond and his father was on of the electricians that worked in the compound. He taged along a couple times, being a geek and all, to see what it was like and he was not impressed. He said that a lof othe people who worked there were either at one end of the human spectrum or the other. People were either 300 pounds or 120 pound weaklings .... lots of them worked on the floor because of karma, while others were high schoolers in a C++ class working on trival parts of the OS for 'experience.'

Thats not what I said. I admit that I could be wrong but from what I read it sounded like the OSI certification was something brand spanking new and that python signed on to it recently. I didn't say I was the first, I just said I have had it for at least a week and have seen other projects with the mark on it for a little while now.

I admit I could be wrong though ... maybe pything has it had since the very start and it's just getting reported now.

  12. Thompson Computer Warehouse on Home-Built vs. Store-Bought PCs · · Score: 1

TCWO is where I purchased my parts last time I did an upgrade (about 3 months ago). They had really good prices and great web/phone support. I had a problem with my order and emailed them (I put only 256MB RAM instead of 512MB) and they got right back to me and fixed it.

I had a problem with Tiger Direct about a year ago. While their prices are allright their service is terrible. Phone support is nonexistant unless you want to be on hold and then told to call back later when Mr. X is in and their products seem to be a bit diffrent than what they give. Heck, one time they didn't even send me the product!!!

  13. Laptops Versus OSS on IBM Dropping Laptop Linux Support · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems like most companies don't support Linux because of the 'driver problem.' Really it just boils down to laptop manufacturers not wanting to give out specifications or open the drivers up so non Windows drivers can be made.

Luckily, it seems that apple has a pretty good track record when it comes to laptop drivers and specs. Unfortunatly, their products cost a bit more.

Music is not where they make money. I worked for Best Buy for a few years and got to know how they do their buisness (and networks too ...). CD's and movies (which are all lumped into the Media Dept.) are there to bring people into the store and browse at other items. According to my old manager, Best Buy actually looses some income because of the Media Dept. in theft and in unsold items.

Best Buy makes their money when the music lover checks out the mp3 players and decides to splurge, when the suburban family comes in for a PC, or when the teenage rapper guy comes in for a new sound system.

In a nutshell, Best Buy has always lost money due to CD's, why would they care now?

  24. Not EQ's Fault on Suing Sony for Everquest Related Suicide? · · Score: 1

While this story is sad, there is a good chance it wasn't EQ that pushed him to suicide. Look at the medicine Accutaine (sp), they say it causes people to commit suicide because of one case in which a boy who lost his girlfriend during prom and had a history of depression killed himself. What it comes down to is this guy had some heavy mental problems that needed treatment and it really is his own fault. He was an adult; he chooses what to do for himself. His mother could have helped but not paying for EQ or Baker Acting him into a clinic getting him help if he wanted or not, but she didn't.

Also, why would anyone release information on an adult to another adult cause they want it? By law they can't anyways. I know when I turned 18 my mom couldn't ask for my college records to be trnasfered to another college because she had no right to do so (or even see what they were).
