The reason you get emails with your personal information has nothing to do with https (secure) v/s http (insecure), it has to do with the company you did business with sharing/selling your information with their 'business partners' and / or selling it to marketing companies, and the tracking cookies from other websites you've visited.
If you really love the mechanical keyswitches and want a Mac Friendly layout, I'd recommend the Matias Tactile Pro:
http://matias.ca/tactilepro/
I've had one for 4 years now and absolutely love the beast. Won't solve your usb port on the side problem though.
It's been replaced by the tactile pro 2 http://matias.ca/tactilepro2/ which I have no experience with, but If it's anything like the original it would be a great keyboard.
I run into that too, and here's what I do. I install both elvis and vim, and in my.bashrc alias elivis to vi.
That way I get the best of both worlds, by calling either vi or vim depending on my needs.
I have a Motorola Q running Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone edition that I really like. I've had it for 4 months now, and never turn it off. It has yet to crash, and I've added several applications to it.
I'm not a Microsoft apolagist, far from it in fact, the only Microsoft software I have is that phone. I work with a friend who's addicted to his Treo 650, and after playing with my Q for a bit he's already shopping for a Windows Mobile 5 based phone.
The name has been around for a couple of years now... Unobtainium!! Haven't you seen The Core?
In fact, we already know it's properties - Gets stronger when under pressure, and converts heat to electricity!
It's S.O.P. in many different industries too. I have given 2 or more weeks notice in 2 different industries (non IT related) and was immediately terminated with pay as soon as I served notice. Once actually without pay.
I don't think it's necessarily "unethical" to do so as long as they pay you for the time you intended to work. If they don't, it's a different story.
First Post!
Seriously though, I don't block inline ads in web pages, but I do block pop ups. I don't mind advertising if it isn't annoying, and in my book, pop up/under/click through advertising is very annoying. I go out of my way to avoid the products that are advertised that way as much as possible.
You can most certainly run a program as root on an X session that is runnning as another user.
Yes, I am aware of that, but my question is still pertinant - WHY would any security conscious admin risk that? IMHO, any distro that sets that automatically has very poor security policies. And if he set that himself, again I say it speaks volumes for his personal attitude for security.
Um. Puhleeze. Anyone with a clue about decent security practicies would open a vein and bleed out before running any X programs for system configuration. That's just common sense.
If he could run gedit as root, then he must have been running X as root which speakes volumes about his lack of care for security.
*Disclaimer* I an NOT a Fedora fan, I don't use fedora. And oh, yes, VI/VIM rules!
If you want a word processor that's more powerful than TextEdit, WordPerfect 3.5e for Classic can still be found on the web, Remember that Corel released that version as a free download.
I keep it going on my powerbook running under classic (works wonderfully) out of nostalgia, but it is still a very capable and quick word processor.
Wal-Mart? If they treated Apple like some of their other manufacturers, they'd be trying to make Apple cut corners to reduce their prices.
Hm.... anyone remember the Macintosh Performa series and Sears? I for one would rather not have a retailer dictating to a company what to build and how to build it. Has anyone ever seen that actually result in better quality?
That says it all for me. I recently switched to Macs for that exact reason.
I spent several years running linux (as a desktop for personal productivity), and before that OS/2 with a brief side trip running Windows (that didn't last very long, was way too unstable compared to what I was used to).
When you count the time I spent adminning/fixing/configuring other operating systems verses what I spend on my powerbook, Apple and OS/X are hands down winners for me.
That, and spyware and viruses will be able to execute twice as fast and compromise your box twice as quickly!
Imagine, if a virus like code red spread around the world in a matter of hours, this could potentially make viruses spread in a matter of minutes, overloading bandwidth and really bringing the internet to it's knees!
Quick, let's set up a subnet so that when these processors running windows hit the market, we'll be ready for the bandwidth overload that is sure to follow when virus writers realize how quickly they can r00t every MS box on the planet!
It all should work, except for 3d. The ATI cards have had excellent 2d support in Xfree for a while now, and progress is being made on the 3d support.
From what I can gather, the mach 64 series, and Radeon 8500 series should have 3d support by Xfree 4.3 or 4.4
I certianly hope so, they are excellent cards IMHO, and the only real player left for open-source accellerated 3d.
Yes, I know that Nvidia makes drivers available for linux for the Gforce series of chips, but they are propietary only, and not officially supported. Try calling up Nvidia's support line and asking for help.
Nvidia won't release their specs so the Xfree project can't easily write good drivers for them. I don't know about you, but I really don't want a kernel level driver that is closed source mingling with my kernel. How are you supposed to fix it if it breaks something?
Red Hat updates are free. It's called up2date, and the registration through Red Hat Network costs nothing for a single user.
And it's not just the updates, you can install new packages through up2date. Up2date will download and install the necessary dependancies automatically as well, again at no cost for a single user.
IMHO, you should approach this like any other purchase. What tasks do you want your laptop to perform? Define the job, the software you want to run, then pick the best machine for the job.
Once you get past that, get some real world opinions from people who have had the machines you are thinking of.
In my case, I wanted a laptop that would run linux well, had a native resolution of 1024x768 with at least a 14" screen, was thick enough to support larger format hard drives, had a decent feeling keyboard, a DVD and a CDRW for as little cash as I could get away with. I wound up with a Compaq 17XL570, and it has been great. Over a year old and not a hiccup yet.

Hope you have better luck than I have. Every team meeting I hit my boss up for a dispensation for beers with lunch. Hasn't worked for me yet.

Agreed! Dog shit on the carpet is dog shit on the carpet, not temporary and circumstantial evidence of a defective canine training program.

But what do they taste like? And are they as fun as salmon to catch?
I hope (fingers crossed) This. I doubt it though, Apple seems tied to including a monitor with thier consumer line :P
Outsource it, pay 1000 people in an impoverished country to memmorize all of it !

I just used my mod points up the other day. Damn.
Absolutely I'd be up for a David Eddings movie. Great stuff. IMHO he's one of contemporary fantasy's premier authors.
You loose Powerbook 1Ghz here :)

X clipboard. Works just fine.
