  1. Copy protection? What copy protection? on Newest Audio CD DRM Proves Ineffective · · Score: 1

I just bought the new Meatloaf CD. On the front of the case, it says "Copy Protected". I brought it home, put it in my computer, and ripped it into MP3s using MusicMatch Jukebox, no problems at all.
So... what's up with that? (And no, I'm not sharing it)

  2. Pen/pencil/PDA-stylus combo on When Word Processors Are Out: What's The Best Pen? · · Score: 2, Informative

Here's one on my site that can write in red or black, .5mm pencil, hilighter, and pda stylus, all in one regular-sized pen-like unit. The ultimate geek pen?

  3. Verisign.... verispensive on VeriSign Shutting Down Site Finder · · Score: 0, Redundant

I stopped doing business with Verisign long ago (well, ok, with Network Solutions), when they continued charging outrageous rates for domain registration while prices plumetted everywhere else. Same with their certificates.

  4. TheGadgetBox.com on Expensive Geek Toys Roundup · · Score: 1

Damn, I'm late to the party, but TheGadgetBox.com has lots of cool stuff listed, both cheap and expensive. Yes, it's my site...

  5. Anti-spam web service on Anti-Spammers Wage E-War · · Score: 1

Just putting the finishing touches on a web-based anti-spam offering - feel free to check it out:

    http://www.spamvac.com

In the month I've been using it myself, it's quarantined well over 600 spams from my accounts alone, saving me from having to download them into my email client.

  8. Downloading music on Music 20 Cents a Track in India · · Score: 1

If I could "preview" (ie, bad quality streaming) music tracks for free, I would totally be willing to pay 50 cents or even more per track for good quality downloads.
Oh, but I have to be able to use them on more than just the one computer I downloaded them with (ie, play them in the car, and on a portable player)

  9. Re:$70 million a year loss? on Public CD Copying Machine in Australia · · Score: 1

Hey, here in Canada apparently every blank CD sold is used for music piracy, so why not elsewhere?

  11. Re:Parked Domains on March Netcraft survey · · Score: 1

Not to mention that just about all parked domains at any given registrar are probably on one server, and are likely even pointing at the same virtual site. Hack that one site, and you've just hacked thousands of domains.
Parked domains should *not* be counted in web-server surveys!

If all you need is to access your pop3 accounts, and don't need yet another email address (YAEA), use a sitelike Zotmail

  15. Re:Documenation is not your only problem... on Beginning Project Documentation? · · Score: 1

You can create as many standards and methodologies as you like, getting knucklehead programmers to follow them is a completely different ballgame. The last place I worked, half the web developers were eastern-european, and some of them, no matter how much encouragement they were given to do things according to company standards, seemed to persist in naming variables in Russian. These individuals just didn't seem to understand that the next person to look at the code most likely wouldn't be them.

  16. Re:Might be a bad idea on Analog Tachometer PC Mod · · Score: 1

A spinning computer would be pretty cool, especially if it was in a circular transparent case, and the motherboard spun around inside it. And with the motherboard spinning, you might not even need a CPU fan. Cable connections might be an issue though... so most connectors would have to be wireless.

  17. Developers and security? Pffft... on Security Engineering · · Score: 1
I recently worked on contract at a *major* bank doing web (intranet) programming in one of their IT departments. There were about two dozen people in this department, working on everything from banking apps to back-end HR systems, and *none* of them really had a clue when it came to security.

We had people embedding SQL userid/passwords in client-side javascript, passing stuff in plain text in query strings that should have been SSL'd, and other fun stuff. I tried to hit a few of these people with a clueX4, but most just couldn't be bothered learning even the basics of security standards. It was pretty scary.

All developers should be forced to take a few security courses before they even get to touch a computer in the workplace, and even then, audit audit audit...

  18. Great, now how about a vacuum-tube-shuttle? on ULTra Robo-Taxi · · Score: 1

It would be much cooler to have a transportation system that uses a network of transparent tubes, and shuttle-pods propelled by air-flow in the tubes. Anyone remember the systems they used to have at those old catalogue stores for delivering your order to the warehouse at the back? That's what I want, a giant-sized version of that.

  19. Re:Global wargame - a road to peace? on The Challenges of Making a Multiplayer Game · · Score: 1

While such a game could be cool, there would be a number of rather large problems involved. Generally, in an online game, the players are fairly equal, and each player can only do so much in terms of killing off other players. Now imagine your game scenario... two sides, each composed of foot soldiers. So far so good. Now give one side an Apache helicopter. All of a sudden you have a *huge* imbalance. It would be very difficult in such a game to not have such imbalances. Not to mention the idiots that would ruin it for everyone by suddenly carpet-bombing their own ground forces with a B52...

  20. Opens the door for tiered pricing on New HDTV Encryption Obsoletes Sets · · Score: 2, Insightful

I can't imagine that the industry would screw over the millions of people that will have bought HDTV sets by the end of this year. More likely, is that they might start offering different levels of service - at the standard rate, you get 480p analog, but at a higher rate, you can continue to get 1080i. If there's money to be made from selling to the capabilities of the existing sets, they'll do it.

  21. The good news is... on Targeted Sound Beams · · Score: 1

Lifeguards in public pools could use this technology to yell only at specific idiots, rather than annoying everyone in the pool with their whistles and bullhorns.

  22. The potential for abuse is staggering... on Targeted Sound Beams · · Score: 1

So now, not only can your grumpy neighbour throw stuff at your dog in the backyard, he can torment it with aimable ultrasonic waves.

And if you thought idiots with laser pointers were annoying, just wait until they get ahold of the "pocket sound projector."

  23. Fair use... on Canada to Hold Public Hearings on Digital Copyright · · Score: 2, Insightful

Fair use: I have a young child. I have a DVD player. If my child attempts to load or unload or even think about a DVD, it is rendered unplayable within mere seconds. If I can make a backup copy of the DVD, and use the backup, well then, problem solved. I should be able to do this legally.

  24. Transparent tiles on Transparent Aluminium · · Score: 1

  25. Re:Cartridges on Industry Agrees On Next Gen Unified DVD Standard · · Score: 1

When you start buying CDs and DVDs for your kids, you start wishing they were in cartridges really really quickly.
That's the beauty of VHS - they're virtually indestructable in the hands of a 3-year-old, but I'll be damned if I'm going to spend $20 for a movie on VHS.
