  1. Darknet on IBM Warns Quantum Computing Will Break Encryption (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

In the near future, encryption for darknet transactions, bitcoin usage etc will be cracked. I wonder what will happen with the intel for thousands/millions of drug users who otherwise pose no threat to society?

  2. The govt knows you have a huge outstanding debt and possibly where you were on a particular day. Struggling to see the evil applications of this knowledge.

  3. Good for environment on US Births Dip To 30-Year Low (npr.org) · · Score: 1

Next generation struggling to afford kids will be bad for pensions but good for the environment. The UK is also doing their best to make conditions difficult for parents.

  4. Unexpected, but I'd go for Excel - it is very, very damn good at what it does (and it does a lot).

  5. Water levels on 'Bird Scooters Are Ruining Venice' (latimes.com) · · Score: 1

I thought rising water levels and tourists were ruining Venice, but apparently this article is not about the little-known place in Europe of the same name.

  6. Um, is this obvious or just me? Of course people die early when they have physically demanding jobs - what did they think their aching bodies were telling them? Exercise really isn't all that great past a certain point.

  7. Apparently the greatest desire of the average American voter is to die poor, stupidly, but free.

  8. Cold, dead hands etc on California Bypasses Science To Label Coffee a Carcinogen (undark.org) · · Score: 1

  9. Oops on Nobody Knows How Much Energy Bitcoin Is Using (vice.com) · · Score: 1

I'm sure Bitcoin seemed like a good idea at the time but the thought of the human race's death being hastened due to a made-up currency for drug dealers and launderers is hard to swallow.

  11. Qualifications? on Carnegie Mellon Launches Undergraduate Degree In AI (cmu.edu) · · Score: 1

Who is going to step away from their seven digit salary, working on bleeding edge technology, to teach said technology to ungrateful assholes? I'd want to know what qualifications my lecturer had...

  12. Who the hell is buying all this retro stuff? I love the tactile nature of physical media but you know what I love even more? Space! My collection has gone digital and I have a streaming account. That is an entire wall I have reclaimed. Millennials can't even afford houses so where do they plan to keep record players and tape decks?

  13. Looking after drunk people on Google Maps Is Getting AR Directions, Recommendation Features (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

I find the idea of a talking animal guiding me home after a few beers very comforting. If it can find me a good pizza on the way then bonus points! (Just don't use in Barcelona or any other pickpocket-prone area).

  14. Re: We should be sunk in unemployment on In Banking, 70% of Front-Office Jobs Will Be Dislocated By AI (americanbanker.com) · · Score: 1

For something to come along and solve our employment issues would require a massive leap into areas we haven't yet discovered (or a plague). When we went from Agriculture to Industry there was a shift in society. The shift from Industry to Service also necessitated a change and was fairly bad for vast swathes of the West. Let's see what happens when we lose another industry - there just aren't enough new jobs out there to do full-time hours.

  15. Work/Life balance! on In Banking, 70% of Front-Office Jobs Will Be Dislocated By AI (americanbanker.com) · · Score: 1

AI will strip more jobs than foreign workers already do.... the only way you will get better work/life balance is if you actually own the AI, or the business that uses it.

  17. At least this kludge will make it easier for office anarchists to skim a fraction of a penny off every transaction and deposit into a bank account... JS precision is so bad nobody would ever notice!

  18. Don't care on Are Two Spaces After a Period Better Than One? (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

Who cares if it is more efficient to read? It's annoying to type and there is no logic behind difference in space after commas or full stops. If we cared about ease of reading there would be more pictures in books!

  19. Re: This article is wrong on The Rise of the Pointless Job (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

The fucking unions will be the ones crying about immigrants taking their jobs as well, immigrants who generally want to work for a living. Either get exploited by companies or unions, either way the average worker loses.

  20. Study something interesting on Ask Slashdot: What Should I Study? · · Score: 1

Go on Coursera and find something interesting... learn a foreign language, study geology or biology. Sounds a bit like you have learnt to use useful tools but don't have anything to do with them. Data analysis is boring when you have no interest in the data - find something you want to learn more about and worry about tools and frameworks another day.

I'm a bloke, so being realistic, I don't have stalkers and nobody is searching FB for nudie pics of me.... but, if I was using FB for dating, would I really want a stranger browsing my old photos and viewing my contacts? This hands over more info to a potential date/psycho than I am comfortable with.
