About half of the comments so far are about simoniker being missed, and they're all modded off topic. Why? Wasn't more than HALF the newspost about this very topic? And come on, moderators, where's your sense of compassion, anyway? =)
Now THIS post, on the other hand, is clearly off topic, and SHOULD be modded likewise.
Well, I can honestly say that you were my favorite editor here on/. Of course, I've never really paid much attention to the actual editors, but I liked the fact that/. games weren't just a summary of the latest (p)reviews and press releases: it actually felt like the editor (you, simoniker) wanted to convey something more.
And, I've just gotten myself yet another reason to read Gamasutra.;)
Thanks a lot, simoniker, I hope that/. games will be as interesting as when you were the editor! Cheers, and good luck with the new job!
Well, why don't you just use a service like Spamhole to avoid e-mail signups? That's what I use. If I remember correctly, none of my FilePlanet info is real. I just use my usual Spamhole address, and then type in random stuff. Works great =)
Unfortunately, the online, downloadable part of Uru has been cancelled, claiming the reason to be too few subscribers. However, the would-be downloadable content will be released in the more traditional form of expansion packs.
Pointing out that we can find traces of the breakdown products of nicotine, flame retardents, DDT, etc is meaningless unless you actually say:
1: How much 2: How toxic it is
OK, so in order to believe something, we need solid facts. I'm with you so far.
The truth is, you are a thousand times more likely to die driving to the store to buy your fruits and veges than you are to die from the trace amounts of pesticides on the food. Everything you eat contains hundreds of toxic chemicals in some amount.
Didn't you just point out that we shouldn't believe things unless we're given facts, yet you still try to tell us that what you're saying is the truth, without backing it up?
So, your statement is as believable as the article?
The theroretical maximum of medium-format is roughly the same as the image in the article
Though that may be the theoretical maximum, there are quite a few people who would say that the detail level of medium film isn't all that great. A good example of this are these articles, comparing medium format film to high end DSLRs such as the Canon 1Ds.
The results are quite interesting, and there are similar comparisons with similar results floating around the 'net.
These days, teams of hundreds of people work on eye candy and very few develop the actual gameplay.
That's one way to look at it. Here's another: On a lot of old games, you only had one or perhaps two persons working on all gameplay. Today you most often have several specialised people; a team doing the maps, a couple of persons writing the story, a team devoted to gameplay mechanics, someone doing the AI etc. It could be argued, that with all these specialised people, gameplay is/should be much better.
Though I'm not saying that newer games are better, or vise versa: The last two games I played was Deus Ex and Bubble Bobble, so I sort of prefer to mix things up a bit. =)
Neil Gaiman was here in Stockholm the other day, holding a q&a with his fans. One of the questions was "How come you aren't involved with the Hitchhiker's movie, writing the script and directing it?" His answer? "If Douglas [Adams] couldn't do it, I can't either." He also said that the best Hitchhiker's movie is and will always be the book, or the radio show. "Hollywood can never render Ford turning in to an infinite number of penguins better than you can in your head," as he put it.
And why was the above modded down? I agree with him, this (aspecially the student side of the competition) is an excellent place for game studios to look for up and coming talent.
Though you make a good point, I'm not so sure if I agree. Example: GTA3 and GTA: Vice City. They were both huge successes on the PS2 and later, the PC, despite the games being out on the PS2 a long time before the PC versions finally emerged. True, it was "only" little over a year between the versions, but the games still sold quite a lot of copies on the PC. And the graphics weren't even all that great, compared to the "standard" of the day.
Of course, some of the other improvements are multiplay via network, two new weapons in multiplayer and a semi-new vehicle (Warthog jeep with rocket launcher instead of the regular machine gun). I think that multiplayer over the internet is definetely the biggest improvement, at least the most interesting.
Actually, there are submarines in the game, and has been since its launch. screenshot check the fourth shot. And if you go to the official site and click the 'armies' link, you can read about the sub.
A couple of weeks ago, I was a LinCon (RPG/board/cardgame convention) here in Sweden and played Cheapass Games' BRAWL for the first time.
For the uninitiated, this is a card game played in real time. One round lasts for about sixty seconds, and then you're stressed as hell.
So, me and my friend sat down and was introduced to BRAWL. We found it exilarating! The fast-paced, constantly changing gameplay was really neat. Anyway, we played it for about twenty minutes, and were dead-tired by the time thy yelled "time for the BRAWL Tournament! You two, we need two more contestants!" So, being rookies (to say the least) we entered into a tournament with 30 or so people, some who've been playing it since it came out.
Guess who came third. =)
Though I'm not sure it was worth it, since the tournament took five hours to play! And I won one set of cards; you need at least two to play. My friend bought me a second deck, and I've been forcing my friends to learn it ever since.
one of the interesting benefits of ordering one was a contest that any pre-order customer could enter. to enter the contest the purchaser needed to write an essay, each week 6 people are selected to be flown to the segway ht headquarters in manchester, new hampshire, 2 full days of training on the segway ht, factory tour, a visit to dean kamen's house (the inventor of the segway ht), some special surprises and the most exciting thing of all, delivery of the segway ht before december 24th, 2002, 3-4 months before the general population gets them.
Well, suppose they actually did manage to compromise the key. Say, having an inside contact on teh XBox project development team.
Wouldn't this code cracking business be quite a nice disguise for releasing the actual key they've gotten their hands on? After a couple of months running this project, some machine suposedly manages to find the key, but in actuality they've just released the key that they had all along.
If you just have a proper fan and heatsink, you will have no instability.
That's not excactly the point here. If I'm a good enough driver, I won't ever get into an accident.
Every processor is stable, so long as you have proper cooling, basically no matter how much you overclock it.
It's more a question of wether the cooling that comes with it from the beginning is enough or not.
So, let me get this straight:

If they're ever going to develop an Ender's Game, uh, game, I sure hope that the developers doesn't read this Penny Arcade strip.

Pedophiles are disgusting enough, but zombie pedophiles? That's the nightmare scenario.
Inverted necrophilia, eew!

Highly recommended game (and company)!
Though Blues have been mentioned here in other posts, I'd also like to mention ve3d.com, another great site that summarises a lot of other news sites.

Well, though it may be closed, that hasn't stopped people from implementing the protocol in other open source programs.

With all the recent stories about India, this reminds me of how Japan made leaps and bounds ahead of other countries not long ago in our History...

If you are going to be a bad person, you should at least do it quietly, without confessing in full view of anyone/everyone.
So, to recap the moral of the story: Don't do bad things, unless you know you won't get caught.
