  1. What that means for me... on The Eyes Have It · · Score: 0

I've never been on a plane before. In 24 years of existance, the only time I've ever been inside any aircraft was when they were on the ground at air shows or something similar. So what does the new lie detector thing mean to me?

Since I've never been on a plane, I'm going to be hella nervous. I mean, with all the airline disasters I've seen on TV, compounded by the events of September 11th 2K1 and subsequent threats by radical Muslims, I'm goinig to be shaking in my boots. Literally.

Yeah, they might let me slide since (a)I'm an American, (b)I'm whiter than the whitest white man, and (c)I'm agnostic, so I don't have any religious ties. But will the initial hassle be there? Will it cause an incident? And if it does, can I sue the hell out of the security firm that operates these things?

I'm willing to bet that around 60% of people who fly post-9/11 are nervous anyway, whether they've flown before or not. Granted, the fear of a hijacking or worse shouldn't slow us down, but the fear is still there, even in small doses. And those eye scanning cameras are going to detect that. 1 in 10 innocents? I say more like 6 in 10.

You'ld think that with all the millions they're going to spend on airport security they could come up with something that would weed out the bad sheep from the flock of passangers without risking the hassle and wasted time they'll end up with by pinpointing the wrong people...

  2. Are ya really surprised? on FBI, Pentagon Talk to MS about XP Hole · · Score: 0

Yeah, I don't like Microsoft. Just look at my Karma rating. Over the last 3 years, I've had ME eat a hard drive and start munching on a second one, had to rewrite the registry several times, and a boatload of other problems. This is why I switched permanently to Mandrake.

I wasn't at all shocked when I read that XP has a serious hole. Heck, the whole "Upgrade/Shutoff" issue made me walk away from the idea of ever owning it. And now, there's a hole big enough that the FBI is on their case. Granted, it's because of the current state of the world. But really, are you surprised at all?

I know nothing about coding an operating system, but in all reality, I just don't get Microsoft's logic. Linus, Alan and a slew of other keystroke kings/queens work diligently to produce a solid OS (all OSs will have holes, noone's perfect), and they don't even get paid for it! Microsoft makes billions and they can't even get over their e-mail virus hurdle (short answer, stop making e-mail clients open everything with scripts). Now there's a serious hole in XP? Could someone explain that logic to me?

I know it'll never happen. We all know it. But until MS gets its act together, I'll be running Mandrake nearly full time and trying other distros. Anyone care to place bets as to when the next big problem with XP will be discovered? My money is on sometime in the next 10 days...

  3. Video Games ARE art, and it doesn't stop there. on Are Videogames Art? · · Score: 0

I was never really much into programming. Did some BASIC when I was a kid, but then I lost myself in Digital Design and Production. I've always looked at programmers as artists in their own right, and they deserve that recognition.

When you take away the flashy graphics, killer soundtrack and story (depending on the genre of game), left alone at the heart of a game is the code. Programmers spend countless hours tweaking, re-tweaking, debugging, doing end-runs around functionality problems, more tweaking, etc. That in itself is an artform. One that I'll probably never learn, that's for sure.

That's not to take away from the writers, designers and producers of the game. Their job is equally important, taking that code and putting a face to the gameplay. How many games have we fallen in love with (FF, Chrono, Ultima, the list is huge) because of the look and feel of a game? The story you become immersed in? The sheer challange of it all?

Video Games ARE art. From Pong to Final Fantasy 10, it's evolved like any other art form and should be considered as such.

If there's anything the Clinton era taught us, it's that peace negotiations in recent years don't do squat. They hit us hard, and as the old saying goes, an eye for an eye.

The one thing we have to remember is that we're not attacking Afghanistan as a whole. Only the Al-Queda group and their hosts, the Taliban Militia (who, by the way, are made up of alot of non-Afghani Arabs). So before any of you start flinging "towel head" comments, use your own head. We're not Anti-Arab, we're not anit-Islam. We're anti-people-who-think-they-have-a-reason-to-kill-t housands-of-innocents.

If you want to help out, I suggest donating food and/or money to the humanitarian effort aimed at helping the innocent Afghani people. They're the ones being forced into this kind of crap by the Taliban. It will show them that we're not after them, only those who wish to control them and cause havoc around the globe.

Why doesn't the RIAA let the FTC know about TopText while they're at it. I'm sure that the FTC would be interested in taking that waste of code down, since it overlays links without user knowledge, not to mention is installed when KaZaA is.

Good thing I didn't download KaZaA when I heard about it. Noticing that it REQUIRED Windows Media Player killed any chance of that happening. I like my WinAMP in Winblows, and love my XMMS.

By taking one of the best series to come out of Japan in recent times and replacing it with what are obviously the most violent cartoons in history is preposterous.

Living in the area I do, I don't get to see much of my beloved Anime except what comes down the pipe at CN. I was really looking forward to seeing Bebop and see what the hype was about. I was deffinately liking it, too. What next, no Die Hard Trilogy flicks on TBS? We know this is real, and must deal with it as best we can. Watching scenes we are familiar with (as far as cinema goes) will not hurt us at all.

He's clueless on foreign policy. While his tax cut is good, he hasn't done jack for the economy. He's gone and destroyed a budget surpluss by jacking up military spending, among other useless spending initiatives. He can't make up his mind on the environment (being a big oil pawn). His presidency amounts to Comic Releif, not Forward Progress.

He makes Clinton (who I don't like, either) look like a saint. And what kind of family does he come from? His father was the head of the CIA and knew all sorts of dirt on all sorts of people, but didn't know his own son was snorting coke? Come on...

  24. Violence, Video Games, and the Human Race... on Japanese Researcher Finds Gaming Stunts Brain · · Score: 1

Violence exists in us all, whether we like it or not. How that violence is expressed is a product of Environment or Circumstances, not because of a video game or cartoon that has excess violence. We're quick to place blame for our instinctive actions (which, yes, include violence) on something else to make ourselves feel better. Am I the only one who saw the underlying meaning to the story of Gundam Wing?

Common sense says that a child raised with an abusive parent stands more chance of reciprocating that action that a child with decent, loving parents that plays Ultimate MK3 for hours a day. One is a potential life and death scenario, the other is entertainment. We have to teach our children (as parents, that's our number one priority, isn't it?) the differance between reality and fantasy. And we also have to let them know that the world we live in IS violent, and it almost assuredly always will be. Violence is human nature.

Sheilding your children from violence is another bad move. Taking away that UMK3 game isn't going to garuntee that your child isn't going to see violent images. He may walk into the living room while the news is on and hear about the 13 people killed in an arson attack. Instead of protecting them from it, we should explain to them why it happens and what can be done to avoid it.

The point is, the world isn't a Walt Disney feature (god help us if it were), and we have to deal with that fact. Taking away violent things doesn't make violence go away. Dealing with it head on has the potential to, though...
