Ok So RealNames picked an idea that was somewhat obvious. They are allowed to do that (Its a free market). What everyone is missing is WHAT IF MICROSOFT STARTS DOING THE SAME THING IN HOUSE?. Than what will we say?.
I see this becoming an issue when someone will be typing " web browser" in the adress bar and Microsoft redirecting them to IE (or pick your own example where microsoft decides where you will end up) Remember That ALL Default settings in Microsoft's Browser points to thier own in jouse web sites. )and to change that setting you have to be a little tech savvy.
but I always wondered how powerful is the/. effect and this is a great way to find out a quick look at his counter (when I first glanced at the page) was 2002 I think we should take a look at the counter when this post is afew hours stale to see how many people actually hit the page. (or when the server crashes;)
I find this very troubling considering how much power the DMCA has (currently). what if the RIAA forces microsoft to hand over these logs?(so they can track piracey)
I perceive a lot of thorny issues here where the regular citizan gets hurt to protect the corprate interest!
(and whats up with you-just-can't-make-this-stuff-up dept.?)
This disc is a great idea pity they are selling it to consumers. I belive that the buyer for this technology would be the ARMY. Imagine them being able to communicate with something and than having the data destroyed AUTOMATICALLY.
they can put this in AWACS or P10 planes (remeber the incident with CHINA?) and if they get into a nasty situation just pop out the disc and watch all the programs they spy with disappear (yeah I know you would not be able to use this to record data)
Unless they extend this coating onto CDR for military to use and if they get into trouble they just expose the data to sunlight
Gives a new meaning to "this message will self distruct in 5 seconds";)
Your Biggest threat is not a Cracker or Hacker. I beleive that it would be a rougue employe who was recetly fire/paid off who would cause the most trouble. I would advise looking at creating an encryption authentication just for this reason.
I was thinking of doing the same thing (but on a slightly largert scale) I recommend that you get a cheap Ipaq and a 802.11b add on card. for I/o with the motors (on the R/c car) you can look at hacking the serial cable to control them. the plusses for doing it this way is that you are using off the shelf parts.
I belive a lot of people missed an IMPORTANT aspect of this story!
that is that these little bugs are a BASIC form of AI!. think about it a bug that interacts with its environment the way a little bug works and this is simulating a type of intelligence.

Wiring A New House?
·
· Score: 5, Insightful
of Course it is a no brainer to wire your house with cat5e (in fact when my dad redid our house 8 years ago he made sure they installed cat5)
But from another perspective AFTER you wire the house (and before the drywall is up) run through your house with a CAMCORDER and record where all the wires are placed this will become an invaluable resource when you have to do expansion!
think about it,
Almost all microsoft products have been delayed due to one reason or another. Now assuming that the injunction happens Microsoft has a reason why XP is delayed (and they can continue to get rid of last minute bugs!) while still saving their image saying that "We were delayed because of the court injunction".

Instead of using a sharpie I recommend using a dry erase maker (you know the marker used for the white boards)
the reason is that this marker will not leave any major damage to your cd (I hope)
Imagine a Beowolf cluster of these babies
if you look at the specs on this computer (at OQO.com)
it says "- media player mode with enough memory for 1000 songs or three feature length movies"
All I gotta say is I hope the MPAA/RIAA dont get ahold of this quote and secondly you can only fit 3 movies (I thought DIVX took care of that)
"Benford and Hawking share insights on the meaning of life, the universe, and everything."
Um we knoe the answer to this question alredy it is 42!
it would have been cheaper for them to buy all the Cd's and then tell the RIAA that they own all the records!
Ok I take that back I sort of ignored the unforeseen circumstance of limiting transfer loads
