    I've known that sites dynamically change prices for some time; I've experienced it myself with amazon.com. Still, how much time does it takes to weasle out those last couple of bucks? 10 minutes of hassle?

    And what if the best-priced site is one you've never heard of? How reliable are they? what is their return policy? shipping? charge state tax? You've got to research that also.

    Sticking with one site, even if you know if may not be the best deal, may still be a good choice.

    I'm sure I'm one of those guys that marketing droids love, but I don't care. My time is more important to me than saving a few bucks here or there.

    good point.

    Another less tangible point about the "great free web app" model from Google - we give away a ton of personal information in the bargain.

    And all the reassurance that it won't be used for harm; the "do no evil" motto - aren't they lulling us into a false sense of security?

    My first R&D project (mid eighties) - we had a test protocol that we had to fly out to.

    We used the Original compaq portable (the monster with the Green CRT and two 5 1/4 floppy drives)easily 20+ lbs.

    I carried that sucker all over LAX/Chicago O'hare because we were too paranoid to check it as luggage.

    Ah, back in the day. We were studs.

    looks how kids today whine about carrying around a 10 lb. laptop. ;)

    This to me is the most frustrating thing about office. It's great when it works, but god help you when a big document starts freezing and spazzing out after rearranging your doc.

    I really like the project notebook idea in 2004 (mac) but I've also had this get corrupted on me - extremely frustrating waste of time fixing this.

    On a different note, where is the Mathcad for 'nix, mac folks? I love the idea of it but no way I'm going back to a dell laptop.

    Seriously, engineering notebook software with some equation solving built into it; a great scrapbook feature, that doesn't have to run on a windows box, and doesn't cost $2k (ruling out maple, mathematica, and Matlab - I know they're good on OS X, but two thousand dollars?)

    Anything out there?

    I just hate being on the receiving end of it. Today, if you don't want to be influenced, then you'll have to cut off all your sensory input.

    Better yet, just be more selective about what you read and watch, and as the article mentions, apply that critical thinking stuff you learned in college.

    I had the same experience when I bought my first home. The escrow officer/lady actually chastised me for not knowing how to sign my name properly!

    I was so pissed, but I meekly complied and let her tell me how to sign all the documents like I was a five year old.

    later, I realized that I had paid her to treat me like that.

    Several closed escrows later, I sign the damn papers how I want, the less legible the better.

    Escrow lady - kiss my ass!

    I bought Apple stock right before the previous split ('99); They got hammered hard in 2000. My valuation fell to about 18% of what I had invested.

    I hung onto it because I believed in the company and what they were doing. I recently sold it and ended up doing pretty well on that investement.

    I remember reading many an article about how Apple would always be a boutique stock, never gain market share, etc. etc.

    Bottom line, you've got to do your own homework on investments. Afterall, it is YOUR MONEY.

    Excel - the swiss army knive of science.

    It's pretty cheap, does plenty in a "good enough" fashion.

    As far as real science? If you can't do "real science" with a stick in the dirt, then you really have no idea what your doing. No computer or software program will save you.

    Take that.
