  1. PNGs?! on New Service Converts Torrents Into PNG Images · · Score: 5, Funny

OMG, who uses PNG files?! The compression routine is rubbish! I'm going to use this technology, but I'm going to convert the files to JPEG before I upload them. When people see how much smaller the file is that they have to download, they'll quickly move over to my way of thinking.

  2. 0.97 0.98 0.99 ??? on The Amazing World of Software Version Numbers · · Score: 1

I remember when MAME was hovering around the 0.97 mark and the user forums were asking if this meant that in 3 version's time MAME would hit version 1.0. The answer came back as no because that would mean that it was complete and MAME is nowhere near completed. Instead it went from 0.99 to 0.100.

(That's a period denoting the end of the sentence, not part of the version number in case anyone was confused.)

  3. Still using IE6 on Most Companies Won't Deploy Windows 7 — Survey · · Score: 5, Interesting

We still have IE6 installed by default at work. The reason we haven't upgraded is because it'd break some of the applications and they don't want the headache of having to retest the application (that's the excuse anyway), so we're stuck with it.

I expect we won't be moving to Windows 7 any time soon either, XP works fine and not only would they have to spend money on the upgrade, but they'd have to re-train everyone.

I think it's a bit unfair to criticise KDE 4.0. It wasn't supposed to be for the end user, but for some reason the end users started using it and then started complaining. 4.1 was supposed to be the proper release, but I found it too painful to use compared to KDE 3.5 and as a result I downgraded back to Hardy.

Unfortunately Hardy's long term support ends in October so I'll have no choice but to upgrade to Karmic. Hopefully KDE 4.3 will be more along the lines of what people want.

I use Netbeans 5.5. I did upgrade to 6.x but quickly reverted back when I found out it did not support auto completion without having to import the package first. Maybe this was a bug in Netbeans 5.5 but I did like the way I didn't have to stop typing, use the keyboard combination or right click and select "Fix imports". Having to do this just to get method completion for something like a Hashtable was unacceptable to me.
