Slashdot probably has the highest concentration of geeks on the net. What better place to settle this matter. I believe we should have a REAL poll of this 1GB=1024MB vs. 1GB=1000MB issue. A real poll where you *must* be a logged-in member of Slashdot in order to vote and keep the poll running until 70-80% of registed Slashdot users have voted, and only voted once.
BTW for those Metric nazies out there: In the 70s, when my government forced metric in schools, they NEVER mentioned Bytes. Later on, when computers came into play, it was 1KB=1024 bytes. Metric was still fresh in most people's minds but they still used 1KB=1024 bytes. I only heard of 1KB=1000 bytes until the mid 90's. That's when the drive manufacturers started to used it to dupe the non-geeks to sell the drives. It pissed off a lot of geeks because they knew that they were being cheated. Only non-geeks, idiots and marketing types use 1KB=1000 bytes (Marketing types being the dumbest of the three...)
Either you are paid by the music and music cartels or you have no idea what DRM is. It is not a "Feature" like the packaging on MP3 players seem to suggest.
As an outsider looking in to the US, I am amazed how you were so quick to try to impeach a president for lying about where wiley jr. was hiding but not one interpreting your constitution and law to suit his handlers' needs.
The guy is making the whole world hate Americans more (as if that was possible)and stripping your civil rights daily.
I thought you guys got angry when you get screwed. I guess TV, iPODs and pr0n distractions are just to great.
Well I guess I'll have to post my comments as ANON in case the Shrub feels like liberating my country.
Probably. Once it would be proven the $$$/crooks would be gone anyway.

Apple to Buy out Palm?
·
· Score: 5, Insightful
According to a story over at Personal Computer World [two leading Palm investors have created the]Speculation that Apple plans to buy handheld maker Palm [in order to drive up the stock price before they dump it and make loads of $$$.]
-White asphalt for roads. Right now a whole lot of land is pitch black, soaking tonnes of rays. The stuff gets so hot that you can't walk on it! if they were made lighter in colour less heat would be stored in the asphalt. White tires might be needed too to prevent the roads from going dark.
-White roof shingle. This is a no-brainer. They are already being produced. They reduce cooling requirements during the summer. All the lasy-ass politicians need to do is tax the black (and dark colour) shingles and joe consumer will instinctively buy the cheaper white shingles.
Don't fret. Spyware is there to help you in that regard. I heard many people just buy a new PC instead of having their old one disinfected. Why? It costs about the same. You either pay $500 for labor or $500 for a new PC.
RE:Nobody would build a hybrid with a 120V socket Yes, a separate inverter would probably be needed but my point is that it's not even an option or a 3rd party add-on. It would cost $100 to add it in and would quickly become standard. But only our kid will see it. Unless everything goes DC...
RE: Multi-function Cellphone I know I was pushing it. My point is that we don't need all these gadgets as separate things. If you have one of each they become little babies that cry for battery juice all the time. It's annoying. Even the Cell phone/camera is a con-job because many ISP force you to use your air-time to transfer pictures! Why does every cellphone have different batteries and connecters? To make you buy from them and only them. vendor lock-in.
RE:AA cells have more juice than a C or D cell! That's what I saw at my local Home Depot (Energizer). I couldn't believe it. I'm just happy that I was wrong and other better batteries exists.
I remember watching documentary called Phenomenon: The Lost Archives about how from Florida to south of texas would be underwater, california gone too. And yes, a huge world population drop between now and 2050. At the time it seemed like the ramblings of a crack head but to day it is very plausible.
Therefore forget the instant freeze of "The day after tomorrow" and prepare for the instant flood.
Companies have only one goal:get rich quick. Nobody would build a hybrid with a 120V socket capable to drive power tools and a microwave. That's because it would kill some of the same company's other business: Portable generators, regular cars, trucks and SUVs. (Not to mention the housing business since you could live in your car in style!) You won't see a solar rechargeable Cell phone/MP3/Flashlight/am~fm radio/garage door openner/Car key for at least 40 years. Why? because it would kill the disposable battery business. (BTW: did you know that a AA has more juice than a C or D cell! look at the specs on the rechargeables.)
It's all about creating waste to for us to consume more to drive profits. Were all gonna drown for these assholes' profits.
What distribution? Their mirrors have ignored them. -The BitTorrent page doesn't work. -The Official site decided to renumber the episodes by making their pilot episode 0. Meanwhile their mirrors still use the original numbering scheme. -You can only get the latest episode ("To Serve All My Day's") from ONE site: Official site. And yes, it's crawling.
The kicker is that I told the webmaster about all this a week ago.
I guess I'm stuck with web mail and OLK. Sad but true. Until I can print an address book with more than 3-4 contacts per page with something else that OLK, I'm stuck.
I rarely submit stories because I get rejected so often. Now I don't feel so bad but I also learned something: **don't bother submitting stories to/. **
I have a better chance winning the charity lottery for my local hospital than having my story posted here.
PS: 2 years ago I had trouble keeping up with the pace. Not anymore. Because of the picky-ness of/. new stories are rarely posted. I get bored.

The Patent Epidemic

Sorry CokeBear but it's time that you come out of your hibernation. Companies know that we Canadians don't complain much.
ATI knows that. When the Broadcast Flag was about to come out I asked them if we Canadians would have a Broadcast-Flag-free HD AIW card. ATI said they would only pump out ONE version of the card eventhough there was no such law requiring it in Canada!
Let's face it, -Creativity (ie design, written words, picture) are protected by copyright. -Ingenuity is protected by patents (at least it used too..)
Here Creative Labs wants to use a patent to protect a design (Apple tried too, but too late) If Apple looses the Ipod menu design, maybe people will finally wake up and see how Fscked the USPTO really is.
I wish Canada wasn't so freaking cold and socialist.
Well there is global warming...
And the only socialist stuff we have is Health Care, welfare, High School and partial funding for Post-HS studies. You can still buy politicians just like in the states but for cheaper and we have fewer watchdog organizations. Canada, yours to corrupt!
Food, water, and medicine is usually bought locally but that's with what's after the "warlord tax". Sending laptop that are useless for war and cannot be bought locally might actually have a chance to do something.

-lower cost

Yes, you would need a few in series to drive up the voltage.
