Storing metadata in each file in a format designed by its developer certainly is not my idea of "more practical for transfer and multi-platform use". What it the format of the file doesnt' support metadata?
Separating the metadata from the file and keeping this metadata related to the file lets any file have metadata, makes the metadata extensible and easily accessible.
If you need to transfer your files and the metadata, simply tar it like OpenOffice.org does. to solve the cross platform problem.
A plugin could also be used to put the filesystem metadata into a file that supports metadata when using the cp command.

PI represents an infinite string of random numbers and can be calculated using a formula which in a sense is a pattern. So if random numbers can be generated with a pattern then a pattern can be generated from random numbers.
Basically what you need to do is come up with a new formula for each random string of numbers, the same as is done with PI.
Honestly I don't care which one goes away, I just wish one of them would.

Nautilus on my Debian GNU/Linux system depends on magic
to determine file type and it is very reliable.
but examining the file extension to determine type is hardly an IE-only thing.
IE does however depend on the file extension to determine whether the file is executable or not. Anyone can send you a file with a.exe.com or.bat extension and it automatically becomes executable when you save it. On Linux an other UNIX systems, a file is executable when that permission is given, executability is not determined by its extension. So you would have to do a chmod +x file after downloading a file to be able to run it.

Alright, I keep hearing this argument of Gnome being 2 years behind KDE and it's frightening me because if in 2 years Gnome ends up where KDE is today, I'll be very disappointed.
I've switched to KDE on occassion and found nothing spectacularly better than what Gnome offers. I find Gnome and GTK apps better than KDE ones in some areas such as Galeon, Evolution, Nautilus (needs work on speed though) OpenOffice, Sawfish and The Gimp.
If you're referring to speed and anti-aliased fonts, Gnome 2 addresses those issues and should be out by April 2002. That's only 6 months from now, not 2 years.
I agree. I use the same setup and I configured a few custom key combinations that speed things up tremendously. I've been customizing my desktop and key combinations for about 5 years now, starting with Afterstep, then WindowMaker, then Enlightenment and finaly Sawfish - easily the best window manager around in terms of customizability. (I know that's not a word, but you know what I mean...)
There are a few concepts that I've come to depend on over the years.
Using key combinations that require only my left hand which leaves my other hand on the mouse.
Stack and maximise windows
Here are some key combinations that work well for me. The [windows] keys is used to manipulate the windows which leaves the [ctrl] and [alt] to the apps.
[w]-[tab] lower window. This is great when you have a bunch of windows stacked and you simply want to lower the one on top.
[w]-[z] iconify window. This removes the window from the stack so that the W-tab can cyclye between the un-inconfied windows.
[w]-[q] close windows.
[w]-[`] maximise windows.
[w]-[up arrow] go to previous desktop
[w]-[down arrow] go to next desktop
[w]-[mouse wheel forward] go to previous desktop
[w]-[mouse wheel backward] go to next desktop
[w]-[ctrl][mouse wheel forward] move window group to previous desktop
[w]-[ctrl][mouse wheel backward] move window group to next desktop
[w]-[ctrl][up arrow] send window group to previous desktop
[w]-[ctrl][down arrow] send window group to next desktop
[menu] popup window menu
The windows are maximised and stacked. I can cycle through them by lowering the the windows that is highest on the stack to the bottom with the W-Tab combination. To removed a windows from the stack I iconify it with the W-z key combination.
Most of my apps are maximised to the edges of the panels. I have a panel at the top of my screen running the task manager applet that acts like tabs for the windows. I have no use for tabs in applications such as Galeon or Gnome Term or Mozilla because the way I've got things setup, it's like using tabs but works with all my apps and uses less screen realestate the the tabified counterpart.
The Enterprise travels at Warp speed, not Mach. Let's see what happens to this plastic model at Warp 5 ;)
Yes, eye candy. That's why I paid $200 for my video card, for eye candy. It's all about pleasing the senses and eye candy is just one of them.
