Seems to me you're blaming the developers for what the legal department and the marketing folks are doing. How many Blizzard designers do you think really care which network the gamers use, as long as they play the game?
You would want your computer doing other peoples' work in this article's description because you would be paid for it.
These guys seem to envision this happening through some sort of micropayment system, though, which is still an overall iffy proposition considering the current cost of performing a transaction.
There are several other significant issues with using presumably anonymous internet connected machines, and their use of the term "microkernel" only clues you in that it's a NotSoBrandNew concept, but it's a fun read to get PHBs and Venture Capitalists interested.
No they aren't, they're God's Own Truth, and you're a heretic for questioning them.
Sloppy biased PR markitecture methodologies? No way!
Of course, Surveys by sister companies to Slashdot, both owned by VA couldn't possibly be pushing bull or criticizing "The Competition" for much less sloppy statistics.
Remember when Corporate Enemy #1 was singing something to the tune of, "Whenever there's a problem, you don't know who to blame?", and how The Community laughed it all off as FUD? Now you can see that whenever there's a problem, you don't necessarily know who to notify, either. Don't call it a feature one day and then curse it the next. That sounds all too much like somebody else...
Where is AMD in any way obligated to call the Kernel Developer Gods whenever they make a mistake? "Oh, Mr. Torvalds, I'm so sorry we made a mistake with our processor. Oh, Mr. Cox, please forgive us. Please don't tell RMS or ESR; we'll fix it, honest!"
Here's the stark truth for you: 1)Money, 2)Userbase.
You seem to imply that Alan is currently working for RedHat out of the Goodness of His Heart;). I'm partial to the rather convenient possiblility that it's a payhike power play.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. So many slashbots are quick to condemn AOL/TimeWarner and MS for seeking profit, but even quicker to overlook that their Noble Heroes earn a paycheck just like everyone else, I.E. profit from their labor. Slashbots drone on about the virtues of Pro Bono Programming... at least until they move out of their parents' garages and find out that earning a buck is necessary if they want to continue playing Diablo II over their cable modem all night.
Wake up clueless hordes: Your slashdot editors "g0t 0wNx0r3d" by VA, and I'm pretty sure they really don't mind an awful lot having a check every second Friday for what's got to be a killer fun job. Your heroes do not subsist upon GPL alone.
That's such an elitist viewpoint. We think quite a lot of ourselves when we know how to "compile a custom kernel", don't we? It makes us feel like ameteur mechanics the way we so smoothly "trick out" the insides of our computers.
It's funny you should mention this, because just last night I wanted to get an order to go from Arby's and was disappointed to find out that they don't even take checks anymore at the franchise down the street.
Before you Slashbots out there start droning away the thoughts of The Hive, just a word of caution: Don't scoff at the stuff Microsoft does(except maybe Bob;) ). That'll only make them more likely to succeed. Take it ultimately as a serious threat to your freedom and respond to it as such.
VB will definitely turn out crap, but I think the best way to approach using it is as a prototyping tool. If you're doing an important project, rough it out in VB or whatever scripting language you like. It all comes back to one essential truth: Make it work, then make it work well.
It's a real shame that my company does the same thing you guys'll probably end up doing: rough it out in VB[Script] and call it good.
Are you kidding? We are 1337 Lunix Kommunity; our many eyes and unbelievably large wangs cannot be deceived. If something like this had been real, there would be absolutely no chance at all that it was meant to end up on the FrontPage of Slashdot.
I'm sure it was a total accident that an employee of a subsidiary to VA Linux/Systems posted a hoax scare to the front page. You need to do whatever you can to fix this
Gee, they really do talk quite a lot about Lineo and RedHat Embedded. Where did you learn this "reading" thing you're talking about, though? Is it one of those funny things they teach in foreign schools?
P.S. more power to the Penguin, down with the Man^H^H^HBeast, M$, Bill Gates Sucks, Linux RuL3z0rz, etc., etc.
We think we just calculated how to safely detonate this nuclear device, but we're not entirely sure we got it right. Darn these DNA computers! Darn them to heck!

Of course, that's not a perfect quote, becuase the lameness filter doesn't like the GPL.

Are you sure you really want to say that, being a free software advocate?

You're Free to do whatever you want in GNU land, as long as it's exactly what RMS wants you to do.

You should consider posting an opinion piece like this as a link instead.
I hope the lead singer of U2 isn't in violation!

I see CowboyNeal getting way fewer votes than I think he should in /. polls.

Do it for free, for the thrill of programming itself, or go work for Microsoft.
Portable .NET sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Where did you get "at least 6000 years ago" from "could be over 6000 years old"?

A more easily answered question might concern whose payroll the editors are on.
