  1. Re:So China is still a communist dictatorship? on China Bans Running Your Own Email Server · · Score: 1

Censorship, concentration camps, forced abortion, determination of profession, border controls, and billing families for bullets have little or nothing to do with whether the means of production are held privately or in common. Which is what the distinction between capitalism and communism is about. "Communism" is not equivalent to "dictatorship" or "totalitarianism". The fact that those practicing the latter have often paid lip service to the former is tragedy.

You assume the problem is the server. It's not. It's the client. A world with too many people, or even just one zone with too many people in it, is sufficient to cause the client to fail.
The problem is with the server. Sure, everyone's seen what happens in Ironforge and Orgrimmar. Yes, my client has crashed a few times in Ironforge while trying to render all the people there. But that's not what everyone's complaining about. The complaints are about server lag and queues. For server lag, it can sometimes take minutes to loot a corpse or interact with a piece of mail. Queues are obviously not a client problem.

It's been a while since I watched that show, but it seemed like the beginning of every episode featured the John Doe character spouting a stream of nonsense which was apparently meant to make him seem knowledgeable, but in reality sounded ridiculous to anyone who wasn't completely ignorant.

But then after the first few minutes, it would get a lot better. I wonder how many people switched channels during that scene.

  7. Reaction to TP delay on New Technology vs. Old Gamer Classics · · Score: 5, Interesting
ust recently when Nintendo announced that Twilight Princess was pushed back, the general reaction was "OMG, Nintendo is teh suck. We want it now!!"
That's interesting. It seemed to me that the reaction (among fans) was more like "That's unfortunate, but I'd rather wait for a good and complete game than have a bad or incomplete game earlier." Similarly, quite a lot of people would rather have waited a few more months and gotten two more dungeons in Wind Waker.

This may be a difference in perception, as I may have payed more attention to such an opinion because I share it, and that I would tend to disregard an opposing view. It also may have been a matter of the choice of communities that I monitored.

Of course, I did see plenty of "Nintendo is teh suck" type opinions, but those seemed to be from people with a prior bias against Nintendo, and didn't really care about a Zelda release other than as an opportunity to engage in a flame war.

So, what's representation got to do with it?
Taxation without representation was one of the big gripes that the American colonists had with England, their mother country at the time. The crown was increasing taxes on the colonists to help raise funds that were depleted during the French and Indian War, but was not giving them representation in Parliament.

A couple hundred years later, we like to believe that the ideals expressed during the founding of the country are still important, so a complaint such as this is likely to appeal to a US citizen that has even the slightest knowledge of history.

Also recall "The General" with its rapid "education" that renders its students superbly capable of reciting facts, but does nothing about the ability to process those facts. Consider what effect that would have if the entire education system were converted to that sort of model.

  18. Regarding "A Fall of Moondust" on Conquering the LaGrange Points? · · Score: 1
The book mentioned in the blurb actually has very little to do with Lagrange points. It's a tale of a boat that's designed to skim across a sea of dust on the moon, which runs into a problem, sinks, and has to be rescued. In fact, I was (figuratively) scratching my head and trying to figure out what the connection is, when I remembered that one of the characters spotted a heat source from a space station, which (now that I think about it) was probably at a Lagrange point. After spotting it, he was quickly moved to the lunar surface to assist in the rescue operation.

So the connection between the article subject and the book is rather weak. I understand that it's there to segue to the author's commentary, but it just doesn't work for me. Not that anyone cares about what works for me.

I've also noticed that Super Smash Brothers Melee has not become cheaper, but that's not really representative of Gamecube games in general. So many, in fact, that I don't have time to play them.

I don't know what's up with SSBM. Perhaps someone else can clue us in. As for your general experiences with non-dropping prices, it may be particular to Canada or perhaps the stores you visit.
