It would be nice to run both at the same time. Question is which one do you want to be the guest, and how much overhead do you pay to run one under the virtual server. Maybe it makes sense, for some people, to run the bloated Windows natively... and run the leaner Linux on the virtual machine.

Questions is, do you get the "Best" or "Worst" of "Both Worlds".

    Quoting the grandparent...

SCO is right. The GPL is FUNDAMENTALLY about attacking and destroying companies and their employees. Amazingly enough many people still fall for the GPL "freedom" lie.

GPL is a form of copyright, or rather a license to use some copyrighted code. If you do want to abide by the GPL you can write your own code, even if it does the exact same thing as code that is under the GPL license. Software patents on the other hand would prevent you from doing anything even remotely similar to the original code, if there even is code that implements the ideas of the patent!

  7. Repetitive Tasks on Students Do Better Without Computers · · Score: 1

What do students and computers have in common?

Both are given repetitive tasks. The students are supposed to be doing these repetitive tasks to learn. In corporations, computers do repetitive tasks to free up time for employees to do things that require "human judgment".

When you start letting the computers do the repetitive tasks for students, they are losing the experiences that develop good "human judgment".

  12. Re:the problem with this is... on Envisioning the Desktop Fabricator · · Score: 1

I read that story on Wired, and I do agree with many of their premises. Understanding the processes as they occur is but one step towards accomplishing this goal. I admire the vision of people like Drexler. Many "crazy" people thought that man could fly and would jump off towers with big kites. Yes, many of them died. But that did not prove that human flight was impossible.

Maybe I am overly optimistic, but I believe that a near-infinite power source will be discovered at some point in human history. No, I don't believe in perpetual motion machines, but properly harnessed there are plenty of natural energy sources in our world that could provide a "nearly unlimited" energy source and not violate the laws of physics. That is just one of many hurdles to be crossed before this type of manipulation is feasible.

One of the main premises that Drexler focuses on is that once the initial hurdle is crossed, it will build bridges to cross the ones after it.

I honestly don't hold out hope for this in my lifetime, although I am relatively young. I do have hopes for a space elevator. Maybe that qualifies me as "crazy" too.

  14. Almost there... on Robots to Rid Us of Cockroaches? · · Score: 1

InsBot, which is green, the size of a matchbox and equipped with lasers and a light sensor, was developed by Switzerland's Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne. When it bumps into a cockroach, it does what they do: it stops moving. The more cockroaches that approach it, the longer it remains stationary.

They almost got it right, but instead of remaining "stationary", the robot should wait until alot of cockroaches are around it, then use its "FRICKEN LASERS" at a reasonable level, in relation to roaches, to kill every roach around it.

Now that would be worth buying!!

She was a bit ticked that she spent so long writing the code on the board, since it was supposed to take the remainder of the class to debug it.

How about getting a real honest job and learning skills and a trade?

Managers would do good to give some people who seems promising, but lack the "required skills" a chance.

I interview people for positions and I like to see then try. As for claimed skills, I do routinely test them. I once gave a person who claimed to type 90 wpm a typing test. Turns out he was a little rusty, since he only scored 3 and 6 wpm in his two tries.

Maybe he needs some "Simulated Job Experience". I hope it includes plenty of typing and stresses the importance of honesty!
