I would use PGP encrypted email if they'd make it easier for everyone else to use. Is it stands, I unfortunately know too many people that don't even know what Thinderbird is, let alone Enigmail. So, what would the point of encryption be if they can't even open it via PGP. They do make an app for iOS called iPGMail, but it's not easy to use either. There is a service called Protonmail that I like a lot. I'm not sure if the emails themselves are encrypted (maybe for Protonmail to Protonmail users), but I know the servers are Swiss and uses two passwords and no way to recover them if lost. The downside for Linux buffs is that it uses Azure However, due to recent court decisions, Micro$oft can sue if emails are checked without warrants and notifying them. Azure is developed by Micro$oft, so a technicality may offer more protection in the future. They don't have any desktop apps yet, but you can sign in online and they have it for mobile devices. But honestly, you are better off not emailing anymore anyway. It's outdated and no one tried hard enough to make it secure and viable at the same time. I would just use Signal or a Tox client if I was worried about snooping. Don't use Whatsapp or Telegraph. Whatsapp is owned by Facebook and Telegraph has been caught with backdoors before. Also, any country that blocks one and not the other should tell you they are compromised. Matter of fact, Signal is always coming up with tricks to circumvent blocking. And Tox is just something else. Think Skype but encrypted and there's a client for just about every OS. Much easier to setup than Enigmail and you can copy the profile config file to other computers and mobile devices so you don't have to setup another profile. I think it uses P2P and a server to make the initial connection.
Twitter dropped API keys for government spy programs a few months back because of Muslim witch hunts. However, they just partnered with Google to help them build parts of their software. Funny how Google didn't get exempt but Micro$oft, the platform that a whole bunch of our government decided to use for some reason, does. Wonder why (sarcasm) ? Duh. And now they will go after Twitter next since Google lost and is working with them. Revenge for saying no. Just something to be aware of.
Protonmail is a foreign and heavily encrypted Swiss email service that uses two passwords, one for account and the other for the mailbox itself. They don't store the passwords or anything else to decrypt emails, or at least the mailboxes. For man in the middle, I have no idea. But any way, if Micro$oft doesn't have to disclose like Google does, know that Protonmail uses Azure, which is M$ owned. They have it for all desktops and smart phones, or you can just log with a web browser that supports JS.
Recent reports have shown that many families are having to stay together or let their kids "sleep over" at a friend's house just so they know that they are being fed. People want you to think that this is some kind of awkward nerd thing, but not everyone one in Silicon Valley is this genius tech guru; most are Americans with average intelligence. Unfortunately, things are expensive there. You'd think having high tech would make life easier. People buy things they can't afford. "Fun With Dick And Jane" mixed with people trying to prevent "Idiocracy."
Whst dumbass connected the electronic keys to the Internet? They don't need regular keys, they just need an actual 4 pin keypad and set it up so when the password is entered incorrectly 3 or more times, the desk gets alerted. A hotel like that could put a guard on each floor. The maids and security could have a master pin that resets every 6 hours. Or, the guest could have the option as well and have the code texted to them. Put an old fashioned deadbolt in each one for those that are sleeping in their rooms. Problem solved.

If I could run XFCE on MacOS...shiiiiiiiiit.....No one that actually uses their computer for more than just gaming likes the new GUI's. It's all simplified garbage for touch screen lovers. I thought touch screen would be helpful, but who actually uses it? Tablets aren't even powerful enough to run modern desktop apps and those that appear so only work because of cloud computing. They say open source, but unless you plan on running your own servers, kinda pointless and very controlling/limiting. That's how Google and Micro$oft gets ya. Qt is slow as hell compared to GTK and the only reason Qt seems to be better is because the almighty Ubuntu decided to stop using Xorg and hasn't been maintained as well as Mir and Wayland because of such a zeitgeist. I got a laptop from 2008 running a distro I made that mostly uses GTK with new software and it is freakin fast. Of course, Susestudio decided to let the 32-bit build servers rot. So, things are just going to get more CPU/GPU/RAM demanding while dinky Windows laptops stay at 1.3Gz and no RAM at all.
It wouldn't surprise me if the files or metadata were kept on purpose. They'll be the next Yahoo for it though. God only knows what just info could be found. I'm sure intelligence agencies love it.
Statistics can be used to prove or disprove anything regardless of equal data access. They probably did it on purpose. It's not like Cervical Cancer or statistics are a new thing. We've probably knew about HPV forever (just as an example) and now that documents are being declassified or exposed left and right, it's better to make things like this look like a "new discovery" instead of people do actual research and sue. Funny how Johnson & Johnson just got caught knowing about talcum powder and cervical cancer links. Related?....hmmmm...
Its not really the spying stuff as much as I like searching for a subject and then getting objective information back rather than have Google show me what it thinks I want to see mingled in with a bunch of ads. What good is intelligence gathering if it can't be applied to the masses? But on that note, Duckduckgo also has a.onion version.

Honestly, why would anyone use Facebook software and not be concerned? I think Mark Z is in trouble from all ends at the moment and is butt buddies with those he shouldn't be. They even said in the post to not incurage people to stop using Whatsapp because Signal isn't available to everyone. That right there should tell you if that's the best argument they can give to the average nontechnical person, that Signal should be the preferred choice anyway. If a country is blocking Signal then they are blocking Whatsapp and if they are blocking one and not the other, then it's compromised. That is just common sense. People don't like to hear it because there is a difference between a privacy advocate and the paranoid, and I think the paranoid are reacting to the realization that their cool app doesn't work like they want. People should use Tox clients anyway. You get encrypted texting, calling, webcam, and file sharing. And there's no signup or phone number verification at all. It's available for all platforms like Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. The client names aren't the same for all though, but the protocol or whatever is still Tox.

They sell twice as many consoles but have about 1/5 the amount of games as Xbox. This is what happens when people get too dependent on DirectX when OpenGL is soooo much better and available to everyone.
So, we are all supposed to use technology with spyware built in and software that could of been implemented years ago but didn't out of foolish pride, i.e. Bash and Linux features? I'll just stick to actual Linux and not be forced into a cloud app controlled nightmare wet dream of Micro$oft's. You build software that runs fine at 1.2Gz and hardly any RAM only because you force people to be connected to the Internet to do anything, just like ChromeOS. If I'm going to spend money on a laptop, it isn't going to be on anyone's "Trapbook." Everyone, just do yourselves a favor and wipe the Windows and use Linux. They have WINE for running office if you're too lazy to get over using LibreOffice. GIMP for Photoshop people. There is honestly no free and opt source alternative that you can't find as a substitute for what you need. Linux is safer, faster, and far more reliable. If you're a millennial "gamer," you have tons of emulation options, otherwise, just buy a console like a sensible person.
Ubuntu is run by Canonical, which is partnered with Micro$oft. That's why Ubuntu gets more attention. However, funny how they did partner with Micro$oft and actually lost 3 million dollars at the end of the year. I prefer OpenSUSE over Unbuntu not only because I can't trust them anymore, but because they actually have more packages available (RPMs). The problem is, Ubuntu made things easier and every one got spoiled and all the tutorials on the Internet are now for "Ubuntu." The package management is different (replace 'apt-get' with 'zypper'...that was hard ðY'). The file structure is the same. But, OpenSUSE is soooooo much faster. I built my distro using Susestudio and I don't seeing myself going back to Ubuntu anything anytime soon. I'd post a link to it, but Slashdot keeps flagging me when I do it. Just take a look at my username and guess if your interested.
Github and SourceForge are good places to look. One of the best things I know to do honestly, is to google "alternative to [software]" and go to the alternativeto website and filter for open source. Another thing you can do is use Twitter and search for #opensource #video and things like that. Everyone uses Twitter differently, but that's how I organize mine (@theouterlinux). Tumblr I use for command line help and tutorials. Also, I post software links and article on TheOuterLinux.com. If there's Linux involved, there is at least source code posted somewhere.
I think Fitefox doesn't feel the need to do more to prevent tracking because of Tor Browser project already exists. Plus, placing blockers inside their software by default slows them down just enough to affect the Firefox vs. Chrome speed war each year. And, they may use that data themselves for the Browser Health Report that's turned on by default. If anyone is interested in browser privacy, I have a few links on my website: http://theouterlinux.com/priva... There's other cool stuff there too.
Linux has had a Bluetooth package for running scripts when a paired device is outside or inside an estimated parameter for about 10 years. Hell, even my custom distro that I built as an amateur has it. Also, Linux has had facial recognition for login for years, but no one with half a brain would trust something like that, especially with Micro$oft, to which also is partnered up with Conanical, Ubuntu's main supporter of well...everything about it. I really wish Micro$oft (Apple too) would stop making it look like they came up with something new when they just still ideas from the Linux and open source communities.
