Im confused, is it really that costly to just count the votes by hand or machine reader like its done now? whats the advantage of building kiosks that cost (according to the pdf file) $5000 dollars each to make and install, just so you can get the votes counted quicker? Surely one of these $5000 dollar units doesnt count that many votes in an election? Ok so you get the votes counted faster but whats more important - being able to say who won first, or being able to say who really won?
If i see one more touch screen kiosk that lets you access the windows start menu i will smash it in..
I thought this problem was mainly caused by PHB's and Microsoft admins who thought WiFi was the holy grail and all cable based networks should be converted? WiFi is not a substitute for a properly installed conventional network, radio waves get jammed, evesdropped etc more easily. Sure its very useful for some purposes. You can jam a WiFi network with a cordless phone so you better make sure its not mission critical.
How on earth does this provide security? If its only ment to be looked at by the human eye then you dont need to copy it perfectly, you just look at the real document, draw/type what you see and hope that whoever you show the forged printout to will think its geniune. If on the other hand it can be detected by a scanner, then whats the point? and if your eyes can see it at an angle, whats to stop you pointing a digital camera at it and adjusting the angle/lighting until you could see it on the camera? I have RTFA and i have no idea what they are on about, what is the point of this? can someone explain?
If your going to make human organs into a marketable commodity, how about foreign organ harvesting? Why keep it in an internal market when you could combine Americas largest export: war, to create organ imports!
I don't know much about modern warfare and how people are killed but surely there must be _some_ suitable organs from each war? No? well how about getting 3rd world countries to donate them? Assuming they are not AIDs ridden, im sure they would be fine - hell it works with cheap labor shoe factories.
Im not a key demographic prized by advertisers. If they want me they can come through my pop-up and banner killing software.
So basically if the general population gets their way, we will have: an un-centralised, un-controlled medium which is advertising and restriction free and allows anyone to communicate anything to anyone else.
However, if the government/corporations get their way we will have: a controlled and owned medium where advertising and subscription is high and only authorised, monitored and restricted communications are possible.
Doesnt that second description sound exactly like TV?
What about file traders in the UK? Now that America 0wnz our asses they can have us sent over to the land of the un-free for anything they like with no trial. If the RIAA wants to, can they have us? I cant wait to get rid of the current government here, we should have nothing to do with Bush, i would rather take my chances with this place being an enemy of America, atleast nuclear annihilation is quicker than spending the rest of my life in a foreign prison.
5% of windows machines (that are actually connected to the internet to report crash data) crash 3 or more times a day (>2 is the same as >=3) which means that 95% of windows machines crash between none and 2 times a day. Since the 5% statistic was quoted instead of a lower crash rate it seems likely that a very rough figure of 30% of windows computers crash twice, 30% once, and a lucky 30% zero times per day, that leaves a 5% that just dont manage to boot up at all for totally random reasons.
Imaging getting into your car and watching the lcd with green-screen console output scroll through the cars systems checking each one and bringing up wireframes of the car film style to point out problems!
Ah, kinda reminds you of school, with the script kiddies who installed keyloggers and harvested hotmail passwords, those were the days (not that i had anything to do with it ofcourse...)
This surprises me, Sweden is supposed to be one of the most open and free countries in the world, it is, or was at the top of the UN human freedom index (which for some reason i cant find anymore).
If you dont want cookies, turn them off, if you dont want advertising companies tracking you with cookies, set your browser to only allow specific sites. Really all annoying things- vbscript viruses, pop-ups, banner ads, tracking can all be stopped by the browser, html believe it or not is an open standard and you can control anything that happens on your computer.
This kinda reminds me of the DVD-CSS trail and the DeCSS Gallery (i dunno if linking that is illigal or not). An mp3 file is just a load of bits is it not? a mathematical expression of a song is just a load of equations right? If you code an mp3 file into some sort of graphic file (it would look like noise) you could claim that it was a work of art that you had created? You could even print it on a t-shirt. I can see how maybe a raw dump of the CD track could be a violation (but really i dont care) but if you code it - eg by mp3 then your going to end up with something that bit-for-bit is NOT the original. Ok so if that argument stood then you could just alter the raw dump by one bit and you would have the same effect, but thats pushing it. Why is the mp3 codec not an illigal circumnavigation device? How do you define what a copyright violation is? What if P2P networks become fully encrypted end-to-end?
Of course it doesnt tie in, its just an excuse and grab at straws. The US government, in a desparate attempt to redeeme themselves is jumping on every bandwagon. If they would just admit that september 11 was their responsibility and that their lack of adaquate security, countermeasures and defense contributed to the attack then Bush and his loosers could resign and someone who could actually run the country could be elected.
Great, i finally get a decent bandwidth flat-rate connection after years and now i have to start paying for all the sites i goto. It might be a penny a page but thats just another thing that adds up and becomes a bill to pay every month, i thought we could just go on scamming the advertisng penney-per-click companies that think we actually look at their banner ads or pop ups (if u download them but set your browser not to display them then the ad company thinks your looking at their ad and everyones happy)
I think this will probably not help the web, people will be more inclined to make their sites less user friendly - ie split pages up even more so they can get extra clicks and charge more, and use proprietry formats and DRM to stop people stealing their pages and giving them away for free (and why will anyone bother circumnavigating it when they can just pay a penny).
It will lead to more scamming (i.e the old method of stealing a penny from everyones bank account, but with lower security)
As awesome as it is having a programmable PDA watch, i think its probably not the best platform for anything more than telling the time.
Anyone who has the money for this thing will almost 99.99% certainly have a mobile phone aswell and therefore the phone book function is completely useless. Infact anyone who has the money for this probably has a quite a decent phone that they can store memos/todos etc on, download programs for, take photos, read email, browse the net and all with a colour screen. Ok so maybe you might not want to take your phone somewhere, but in that case you probably wouldnt want the phonebook, or the todo list, or any of the other things! I can imagine how hard it must be putting text in one of those things, i remember my databank watch from ages ago:)
For years and years i dreamed of computer watches and now they are here i dont even want one:(
More to the point of anti-trust law suits, shouldnt it be a legal requirement for pc manufacturers to give the option to buy their computers without an OS? That way you could just buy the laptop without windows and without having to pay for windows.
And screw anyone who says that if you buy a computer without windows its because your going to use a pirate copy, thats like saying if you buy an MP5 your going to use it to mow people down. True, you probably are, but dont you have the 'right' to be given the benifit of the doubt and buy the gun anyway?
Well thats ok for me, the only files i've uploaded/shared to p2p networks are files that ive already downloaded from p2p networks. Well i better hope that logic works because i live in England and that means the American government can take me for whatever reason they want.
So now people can ruin their lives just by downloading music, they dont even have to take drugs, murder, rape, assult or steal! Infact you'll probably get a far less serious punishment for those crimes. Laws like this really help to teach young people what justice is all about.
Well allot of car theives/muggers/violent people either get away scot-free or are given _far_ less serious punishments. Hell, even more serious offenders get off more lightly. It seems very unbalanced that someone can get 5 years surrounded by thugs and murderers for a non-violent crime plus a hefty fine!
The police should concentrate on serious crimes first - eat your dinner before you get disert, or atlest eat most of your dinner and then multitask it with disert, prioritising the dinner cycles.
Hopefully building your own PVR, free from digital restrictions management systems will become more popular, Tivo will be useless because everyone will make their own or buy a normal PC that does it (without the restrictions). Then you can add funky things like free TV listings, and groups of people on the net who send signals when adverts start and stop so your PVR can automatically deal with them (i.e get rid of them). Hopefully we can completely drag commercial networks under by 2006, destroy the MPAA and RIAA by 2007 and look forward to a media free society by 2008 watching reruns of quincy:)
I was looking up my old school on the data protection register (uk) they have so much info on the students!
In the uk (as far as i remember from IT class) we have laws protecting our data and ensuring its stored securely, i dont know what would happen if it got out (my school used wifi too) - i.e who i could sue/prosecute to get that lovely lovely free money.. hmm what if i hacked it and stole my own data just to demonstrate? - i could maybe pay off the hacking charges with the money from suing the same people! (if only i wasnt such a lame script kiddie)
The data protection act has to be my favourite uk law, leading to the tv show where mark thomas snoops around dodgy politicians and bosses and then uses the data protection act to demand a copy of all the data they have on him including memos about how they hate him:)
So yeah if your in the uk, just go and demand that companys/schools etc give you your data (i think they can charge a fixed amount for it though)
How do they gather evidence? no (saine) court would accept that fact that i downloaded a file with the name "[something riaa owened].mp3" as conclusive evidence would they? surely you need to actually look at the content and make sure each and every song is what it says it is. Then you need to figure out whats legal or not - they could have downloaded it legit, it could be off the radio, it could be a song they own on CD (yes they are backing it up). What if someone buys a CD, backs it up in mp3 form and then something happens to the cd - they still have their back-up but not the CD - would the ria accept that? its possible that their entire collection was on cd but their house burnt down and they still had their backups! Then, you need to know for sure that they (and not someone else) downloaded content onto their computer knowing full well what it was. If there are laws governing how long (ie 24 hours) a song can be kept for before its illigal then they will need to be able to check that. If i destroy all the evidence before they break down the door what do they have? 5GB of mp3 is much easier to get rid of than 5Kg of crack!
In order to be effective (unless the court is sponsored by the riaa) they will need to fully monitor all the data - sent and received by the offender through their isp/network connection and whatever else has come into their computer.
What if they find my collection of Steps, S-Club, Venga-boys and NSYNC? can i plead insanity?!?!

There are already watches that sync with PCs like that, also the REX was a credit card sized PDA with the same idea.
As awesome as it is having a programmable PDA watch, i think its probably not the best platform for anything more than telling the time.

I think it goes to show that its easier to just hate _all_ politicians, that way you dont get any nasty surprises.
