All I want to know is when the military can start RFID-ing bullets and dog-tags. Think of the body count logistics! And then they could prove that none of their bullets were used to kill innocent civilians.
Imagine the hacking potential: Wipe their database of whats been bought and in stores accross the world, millions of people will be stopped by security! Or do it the other way around and there will be mass looting/shoplifting because the supermarkets have decided to get rid of costly cctv, checkout staff and security guards, leaving only automated checkout gates.
What good evidence destroying/hiding mechanisms are there around? Apart from deleting and overwriting the area several times? How about something that can kill the hard-drive even when the computers off? I see crime scenes on the news all the time with police carrying out computer cases for examination - it always struck me that you could fit tamper protection in your computer - any attempt to move it, open the case or anything with out proper authorisation would cause the hd to torch its-self, this could be as simple as a battery inside with enough power to boot the machine quietly and very quickly destroy the data, the police would have no time to stop it, while all this is probably illigal itself, it could be better than being sued for $50000 per song or whatever their price is?
I hope the next kazaa lite comes with file altering/deleting/anti-riaa utilities:)
Does KaZaa look at the id3 tags aswell? it would be better if they didnt, there would be allot more files classed as "the same" - ie more download servers:)
Maybe its time to include an erasing utility with KaZaa/K++ Lite, so when you get that letter from the RIAA you can securely delete all your pirate music with one click..
What makes this any different from plastic surgery, makup, stylists, lighting and directors? and half of them dont write their own songs, they do copys (called covers) or paysomeone in holland. Most of the industry is full of average people, a good producer with the right tools (see above) can make almost anyone into a star - how do you think pop-idol works? Kinda like script kiddies really? Sure it helps if you have some ability, or atleast the ability to take direction and mime;)
Great, for 50 years people have been saying "computers can never make mistakes" and while allot of hardware and software has been designed like shit and does make mistakes (FDIV Pentium) atleast it makes consistent mistakes. Does this mean that a=b will sometimes be a=c? Will computers sometimes make mistakes just like humans? Or am i talking total crap.. probably.
To Microsoft: Subject: To-do list for your products:
Out of the box, warn users when they attempt to execute an attachment, especially if its an executable. Turn of vb scripting in all products, it can only be turned on manually, or through an "are you sure" dialog box. Advanced scriptable functions - eg access to the address book and the ability to send mail need additional user activation.
NetBIOS: loose it. They can enable it themselves.
Other ports/network access requests: Your OS does not need to access the internet by default, it does not need to automatically update, dllhost&svchost do not need to access the internet, turn it all off, if the user wants it they can turn it on.
Fire everyone in the marketing department. They must all go, they all serve no purpose, footballers are more useful to society than Microsoft marketing department staff.
slashes go forward, adjust your products accordingly
Please extend and embrace the following technologies and free support with your major OS's: firewalls, anti-virus, tetris. In exchange you can take out these technologies to save money: paint-brush, freecell
Good list, dont forget blaster. Im not totally sure but as far as i can tell its catchable just by being connected to a network! All i know is that 2 days ago i made a fresh install of win2k and after 5 mins of my adsl being up i got a "svchost.exe" crash. A quick look on the net pointed to the msblaster worm, i couldnt understand, ive never used outlook in my life, yet just beeing on a network allows this. (with SP 3 installed too). Its like being able to get an STD just by talking to someone!
Also theres the windows messenger service which allows pretty much anyone to pop up spam on my computer untill i turn it off.
I got that email about 20 times, i couldnt understand it - everything in my head was telling me it was just a spam/hoax/virus but it made no sense - there were no attachments, no-one wanted my password or details, and they didnt try to link me to any dodgy sites to download things (well except sites on microsofts domain which is pretty dodgy at the moment), this was after reading an article on the blaster worm which said something like "this is why microsoft's policy is to never solicit upgrades or patches through email"
If its all true and they are forcing an upgrade, im going to have to go without MSN for a month while someone hacks the new protocal for gaim...
Bush says the blackout was a "wake up call" that the power grid needed to be "modernized,"
Yeah that man has a habbit of stating the bloody obvious right after the disaster has happened. Its pretty much his job to make it work or make the people who can make it work work, but no he cant even manage that. I guess its time for another war on something? maybe the war on darkness?
Have a look at the poll results on her website, the second highest vote is for arnie. Seriously i dont think most people have a clue, when i first heard he was running i thought yeah cool, but then i realised what a redneck idiot he is, if people dont know who to vote for they will vote for him simply because of his fame. This whole election is a bad reality tv show - me im for georgy cos shes the cutest!
Every film out this year has been a remake, sequel, prequel, adaptation or blaitent copy.
Hulk - bad adaptation Charlies Angels - sequel to adaptation/remake X-men 2 - sequel to adaptation/remake Matrix 2 - sequel T3 - a remake or a sequel to a sequel Italian Job - remake that isnt needed etc.
I would start with having phone companies scan text messages for film titles and delete them. You can then move on to standing outside the cinema ready to arrest anyone on their phone talking about the film. Also try hijacking text messages and replacing them with adverts for the film.
"Its even portable, so the truly paranoid can take it with them when they travel."
Which one of this is the most likely: - someone manages to get your low-class 'pseudo' random number by extrapolating the exact time of the system clock and the contents of your memory etc. and running it through the algorithem. Someone manages to predict or find your mouse movements by the indents on your mouse mat and the use this to get the same random number you created by moving the mouse in the box. Someone looks over your shoulder and reads the information/password you were trying to hide?
Ok i think there was a typo in the story, they must have ment that they would use voice stress analysis on random calls and if it found that the claimer was too calm it would flag further investigation. If your house has just burnt down your probably not going to sound normal, if your planning a fraud you're more likely to have practiced a convincing conversation.
Sometimes i wonder if not taking part in mass consumer scams makes me a good person or just really really stupid - i should be making inferior products damnit!!
btw that was the slashdotting record, i tried it at 3 comments and it was already down! thanks all the people that mirrored it:)
Maybe access related computer crime needs to be looked at very carefully. The people who take the photos and who probably rape and abduct the children are the real criminals, true people who download it have questionable minds (assuming they actually did it intentionally and it wasnt an accident, virus or someone else) but that doesnt change the fact that they are were using their computer to access data.
If you asked someone to read out loud the hex code of a jpeg containing child porn while you copied it down and put it in a file is that illigal or is that free speech? this has already been looked at with the DeCSS case. You might say who cares they are pedophiles but it does infringe on every other aspect of the internet: If you are arrested for downloading something, eg music, films, porn, software you are really just being arrested for using your computer, its a very different crime from taking out a gun and shooting someone, rape, murder, assult etc.
It just seems to me that legislators dont understand what computers are and they are treating it the same as everything else. If the law allows someone to be arrested for downloading child porn on the internet then there will be no problem making it illigal to do any number of things (downloading anti-american political pages, diagnostic tools, research papers/dmca violating material etc.)
That doesnt mean that computer crime should be abolished, if you are trying to bring the internet down or disrupt traffic that is pretty serious and should be treated differently (in that case you are accessing remote systems with out permission etc.) and ofcourse if you write an outlook vbs virus the case should just be laughed out of the court room and microsoft should pay for your taxi home!
Sorry for bad spelling or flaimbait views - my spell check is broken and the milk in my coffee curdled this morning
I went throught the film guide, almost every single film out is either a remake, sequel, adaptation or copy. The ammount of crap that gets put out, you would think that a little show like futurama would survive. It might not be the best, or original (tell me if im wrong) but its still more entertaining that sitting though a sequel to an adaptation of a cartoon adaptation of a comic (X-Men 2) or a sequel and a prequel (star wars) or a sequel to a parody (scary movie 2), then theres the sequel thats actually a remake (T3) the adaptation thats just too long for one film (lord of the rings) and the remake of a remake * 15 thats based on a true story (titanic) which better not have a sequel or prequel. this post is way off topic but no i just dont care.
How about an automated wi-fi scanner (basically this thing without the wheels) that you carry around in your pocket/car/bag, it could have gps to mark locations and could then send all the data it automatically gathers (as you go about your daily business) to a central database/web-site, to take the piss it could try and use a connection through a network it just discovered to reach the web-site or if it couldnt it could just save it and it could be uploaded later. This would basically just be automated war driving software, but it would be useful to have an electronic database in your hand on the where-abouts of the nearest hot-spot for your web access, complete with gps pointing out the direction and optionally pointing to where it wants you to go to search for new networks. It could even be peer-based - connecting with similar programs on other people and exchanging data automatically.
Great! now i can actually use all the badly designed sites that dont render properly in one browser or another (or all of them) which means you have to scroll left and right to actually read the txt that goes off the screen! oh wait i can already do that with my keyboard..
This is totally pointless for the tasks their advertising, any kids who didnt want their parents knowing their position could easily turn their phones off, get on the tube, give them to friends or just wrap them in foil to simulate loss of signal and then turn them off (looks like you got on the tube;) Any kidnapper could do the same. It has no real value and certainly not 30's value.
Also it would have been cool if they gave you a trial period - like a day or 3 location requests. Seeing as its tied to a phone number you cant just sign up for a new free account. This is such a geek toy, hm i want!

Or just use blocker tags for the same effect...

Hm, no slashdot reading gaim user would knowingly talk to someone who only used MSN unless it was a girl! ;)

As long as its not AT-ST's doing it with AT-AT's, thats just plain wrong, sick, and illigal in some countries!
Who'd rather see Natalie Portman?
for all of us who failed electronics/electrical engineering: blackouts for dummys

All this assuming you arnt in star trek
Do they admit that the spread of outlook vbs viruses is 100% Microsofts fault? or is that 100% 3rd party code?

Yes thats why the cool title says "Microsoft Code at Fault for Half of all Windows Crashes", id like to see a cheep tabloid do any better! :)
