True, but i'm sure there are other sources - russia? maybe an ally? or they could just buy an old (not too old) plane from some random place and fit it out themselves. I suppose maybe they just couldn't be bothered, and knew the americans would back-stab them so they just went ahead with it, and planned to do a full bug sweep right from the start.. or maybe it was one of them who planted the bug to make it look like the americans..
Why in the name of all that is un-american, would the chinese let a bunch of yankies have _anything_ to do with their leader's transport plane? we all know that the american government cannot be trusted, period, (especially since bush came in). surely they can make their own planes and 48" tv's?
After the US government begins its new laws in the area of data and intellectual property, i have some more they could add:
1. The Crap Film and Television Act, will hold film-makers responsible for bad productions, bad acting, bad lighting and poor scripts. If someone passes out from bordom from watching a film, they can sue the studio.
2. The Invasive Pop-up Advertising Act, will ban all pop-up adverts. This will tie-in with the software laws, because pop-ups are technically software, and are insecure (in that they cause damage to my mouse).
3. The Insecure Boy-Band Act, will ensure that all boy-bands are securely locked-up. If a record company tries to bring them to a studio or gig, they will be punished.
The US government today announced plans to impose restrictions on so called 'File Deletion' utilities, and possibly even outlaw them altogether, in the name of national security. "These file deletion programs can be used by terrorists to cover their tracks, and remove evidence." claimed a government security expert. "criminals such as Osama Bin Laden, can cover up any electronic evidence, and make prosecution impossible." However, civil liberties groups claim that the ban would infringe their first amendment rights. Other experts claim that anyone can create a file deletion program with even basic programming knowledge. We interviewed one expert who explained how: "One simple way to make sure your data is wiped clean, is remove the hard drive from your computer, and place it in a furnace for 15-20 minutes." the interview was cut short, when government agents stormed the building and arrested the expert for "discussing circumnavigation devices for data deletion".
People who were arguing the value of human life vs. data in the posts below, calm down. Remember you live in America, land of the great. Every day your country proves that human life is worth far less than other things, such as.. money, and... er.. money. Why build tall, even when it endangers lives? because it saves money. Why put 100's of people into one big plane?.. money. Why were sufficent measures not put in place to [try and] stop hi-jackings and suicide attacks _before_ they happened? yes, because its was a waste of money. Im not even going to talk about how violating your sacred first amendment for the dmca is because of money, that would be offtopic:)
"Unauthorized copy detected. This system will self-destruct in 10... 9..."
It may seem funny now, but i'm sure they could get it passed with the new SSSCA. Its the perfect business model to solve the problem - that computers last too long, now everyone will be buying new hardware every month. Just like with that light-bulb-burning-out conspiracy...
Wow, for once, a big company has done something good (maybe for the wrong reasons, but who cares?).
In other news: "The United States Government has today stated that the DMCA is unconstitutional. If corporations want to sew people just for talking, then they can't use the US Government Logo, flag, or do so on US soil..." umm, yeah, like that will happen 'til pigs fly, or bush makes a long sentence make sense.
Breaking stupid laws that restrict your rights and are created by evil corporate pigs' bribery is OK, just don't, what ever you do, give them your name, or go to america:)
FBI Officials said today, that they have detained 12 people who they think were planning the next major terrorist attack on America. At a press conference a spokes person explained how the fbi were only able to catch the terrorists with the new laws that have been passed since september 11 2001: "Our computer system is set to cross-reference the religon from the census database with anyone who buys an airline ticket. The system flashed up 12 people who were of the islamic faith one morning. We notified the airport and they put a flag on their video-face-recognition system to alert for all brown people. We say, people, because we didn't want to seem politically incorrect by narrowing it to just men." Explained the official. "Then we used the photos on the driving license database to cross check these airport matches. When the 12 turned up at the airport, we were able to arrest them as they passed the gate. Because of the drivers license, we were able to put little stickers with their names, on the cell doors, which gave a nice touch, and shows we care. Now the world is free of 12 dangerous terrorists."
The news conference was cut short when a plane crashed into the whitehouse near by.
The MPAA announced today that it has worked with the US government to ban light research under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. A spokes person said "We are happy that we have nipped this little thing in the bud. Controlling light would allow people to create special viewing devices that could delay light at one end and allow people to watch previously 'recorded' films. We think that such a device could even be incorporated into a pair of glasses." They then went on to speculate that quantum computers could be built that were so fast, they could generate DVD decryption keys in fractions of a second, and that there were many other uses that pirates could come up with.
Ooops, they just missed the Wired Vaporware awards, maybe they can catch them next year. This is almost like that (i think it was austrailian) other compression system a few months back that claimed full screen, high quality, lossy compressed video down a modem - they just didn't say how lossy and there was only one demonstration (that no-one saw). Where is the demonstration for this? i know that if i'd invented it, i would want to prove to the world it was real as fast as i could. On the other hand it could be real - i always thought you could do it with dictionary-based compression, if the dictionary was stored in the decoder software and was very very large to include most likely bit-patterns. Ofcourse fractal compression for any data could be possible - it hasn't been disproved (i dont think). The article looks sus though, and who would call themselves ZeoSync, it sound like a fake movie name...
I for one can't wait to see a camera the next time im at an airport. I will make funny faces as i walk through and laugh as the security guards say "excuse me sir, can you please walk past the camera again" as i hold up the line and say "but why? i already smuggled 50 pounds of explosives onto the plane"
Developers like rockstar are not taking any chances, thats why they have hidden the extra-gore mode in gta3 behind a cheat that doesn't even confirm its entry, and flying the plane around between sky-scrapers is undocumented:) If more developers did this, courts around the world might have more difficulty in banning them "but your honor the cheat to let you hack off g.w. bushes' limbs is just an overflow error!" lol
someone needs to invent a storage device that could store TB's (or more) of data. And license it under some sort of gpl-like thing to make sure the corporate pigs don't get their hands on it, for example, if someone incorporated a copy-protection or drm system onto it, they would have to make the modifications availiable, screw the dmca. Imagine what that would do to the RIAA and MPAA overnight, now thats what i _call_ terrorism lol:) those capitalist pigs must die:)
I saw the title and thought it must be a typo - "Bush Restricts Supercomputer Export" Then i read the post and thought "omg! has bush done something _good_ how is that possible?" then i read the article and realise that i never knew there were restrictions, and that it was an idea dumber even than crypto export laws. Why doesn't America understand that they are not the rulers of the world, that there are manufactures, engineers and programmers outside the US who are just as good.
If a country wants nukes all they have to do is buy them from the US, Russia or China, interesting isnt it, how weapons don't have export restrictions...
Good argument, but lets face it, it was all the governments fault - suicide bombers, kamikazi pilots, hi-jackers, and terrorists have always been around. Its the governments job to think out every situation that could occur in life and plan a way to prevent it, or deal with it. You can't say that no-one ever thought of blowing up stuff with airliners before, bull-shit, its happened in films its happened in real life long before september, the government knew it could happen but they did nothing, why? because all they care about is profit and low-costs. The next big thing will happen and again everyone will say "OMG! how could we know they would hide nukes in vans, or srap anthrax to hampsters"
All security methods (face recog./x-ray/metal) could be replaced with these simple questions:
Would you like a car/transport to be arranged when you reach your destination?
'no' - they are terrorists, they don't plan to reach their destination
'yes' - they are terrorists, but clever ones who are trying to trick you.
Would you like window or isle?
'isle' - obviously they plan to get up during the flight = terrorists
'window' - they have explosives in their shoes/bodies and don't want people to see = terrorists
'somewhere near the front' - they get air sick
Did you pack your cases your self? Did anyone give you any gifts or packages?
'yes and no' - they live alone - obviously terrorists
'no' - their cases could be contaminated with explosives/anthrax etc...
and last but not least: Do you have any un-aurthorised material as specified in the sign above?
'no, i have no knives, butane canisters, biological hazards, firearms, or explosives' - is the correct answer, however, if they memorised this then they are obviously terrorists, if not, they could just be liers
'yes' - call security, but do it with the silent alarm
Remember, all passengers are potential terrorists and should be treated as such. Its not the airlines' or governments fault that this happens, its the passengers.
ok, let me explain. a long time ago, some king said "lets just dump all our criminals on the other side of the world" it was a brilliant idea, no crowded prisons or re-offenders. you guys should try it infact - you could send all your criminals to afganistan:) lol... anyway, i digress, we discovered this neat little island exactly on the other side of the world, now don't go on at me about it being the natives' land that we came and infested, because, well - you can talk. so we shipped off all the criminals and lived happily ever after, although some people were worried that the prisoners might try to dig a tunnel back to england, they were put at ease when we discovered that the earth had a hot molten core. eventually we had to let them call it home, and put our little flag in the top corner. Now you can understand why they have funny ways and speak 'like this?' but it is their own country and they have a right to run it how they like...
Most people don't want to join the euro because of pride, we don't want that eurotrash money:) what if the pound was replaced with a new pound that was fixed at the same rate of the euro - ie 1 euro = 1 pound. That way, everyone is happy...oh yeah, that makes no sense and is offtopic too: Microsoft is bad, kill Gates, kill Blair.. etc... etc..
So who is this year's #1 winner? The legal industry for all the billable hours they got to roll up thanks to RIAA and MPAA lawsuits.
If the law is so complex that you need a degree to understand it, and so full of holes that you can hire someone to win for you just by finding them.. then isn't something wrong? if an OS had similar problems - loopholes/bugs then no-one would take it ser...... oh, yeah, now i get it...
Microsoft is just trying to create a closed pc where they can control everything. The XBox is an evil machine, even the name 'X' is evil, what does it mean? why 'X'? are they trying to hide something? Also, everyone knows that the XBox crashes all the time and that it overheats because there is a hampster fused with a plutonium core inside which they can use to make a nuclear device, i've seen the plans!!!
10 years on, and Microsoft's XBox is the industry standard. After the system was reverse engineered by an independent party, the market opened up for XBox 'clones' also known as Microsoft Compatables. These clones were produced by 3rd parties but the OS and DRM systems were provided by Microsoft - Because of the wide software base (Microsoft bought up Sony in 2004), the 3rd parties wanted to maintain compatibility with the Microsoft OS, and, because it was law in America, the Digital Rights Management System had to be provided by an approved company - either Microsoft or AOL/Time Warner. On the other side Nintendo provided their range of computers - the Polyhedron series. However no-one took them seriously except artists and writers.
but just don't complain when you realise that your dvd collection is crappy low-res. I can't wait for 'dvd-2' with more copy protection systems (rot-13) and more ways for the mpaa to extort money. if everyone just bought projectors and watched 35mm life would be so much easyer....
from a country that has the dmca and the death penalty? i prefer having my human rights, and a leader who has more to life than just wanting to ride air-force one.
