The whole idea of patenting anything should be re-thought from the ground up. It was designed before DNA, code, and the internet and is long out of date. You can't expect a civilisation to grow, if their own laws prohibit it and give ownership of technology to single individuals. Its one thing for a company to sue another for copying an idea for profit, but when you start leveraging royalties from people for breathing because you have a patent on "oxygen hemoglobin transfer" you have issues.
They said 'seven hours' as though it was an excessive amount of time.. i spent more than that on just one game some days. The first time i turned on the vibrator (PS2) i started feeling funny after a few hours of gaming - my grip felt weak, and i sometimes had pins & needles. Now i'm turning it off for everything. Now atleast i know my theory was right. Maybe i should get out more... But i can't beat police down with a baseball bat and then pump them full of lead in real life..:(
Anyone can be a terrorist, and anyone who isn't can easily become one. People can be turned around surprisingly easily. What your saying can't be done, just like you can't get rid of all muggers, rapists, psychopaths or the Bush family.
Its non physical so it doesn't feel like stealing (i.e your not depriving someone of a physical object, only a theoretical sale) although you can argue as much as you want either way, thats just the way some people feel.
Also, taking the example of and expensive piece of software (for sake of argument 3DS Max, which costs 1000's) if someone wants to use the software as a hobby, they are not going to pay all that money for it, so, they will either not buy it, and go with out, or they will get a pirate copy. Does this affect sales in any way? no, they were not going to buy it anyway, full stop, if it wasn't availiable to pirate, they would go without. In the case of this software, if they learnt to use it (the pirate version) and one day got a job as a pro animator, which software do you think they would persuade their boss to buy? the program they learn't to use for free! The boss will easily pay for it, a few 1000 is nothing to a big company.
Its much easier for the developers to go after the big companies that arn't paying their licenses, than the individuals.
As for other software like games, thats a different story. But they over charge, anyone who as played a god sim will know that there is a balance to find - if you reduce the price more people will buy it, if you raise the price, less people will buy it. Considering that a cd costs almost nothing to press, you can sell a game pretty cheap and still make a profit. But the main advantage of selling cheap, is that more people will actually pay for it instead of pirating. Why would you spend ages downloading something that has cut-scenes and the manual and the box left out, when you can buy it very cheaply. The alternative is that much fewer people will pay for what they see as an expensive bit of plastic that costs nothing to make - a rip-off
why are we letting ourselves get into this situation. Business is supposed to work on supply and demand. No-one wants copy-protection, cds and dvds cost nothing to press and the intellectual property is not worth allot, so why are they selling bits of plastic for so much money? When a dvd comes out, the film has already made a profit from the box office so why do they get away with such a high price - way higher than even the ticket you paid for to see it on the big screen? (because people are dumb enough to pay) can the interviews and out-takes that you see on tv anyway be worth so much? i think not. As for cds, why can they not understand this simple idea: "If i can hear it, i can copy it" its very simple, but no, they waste millions developing new technology that usually degrades the product that the customer pays for, and the customers take it without question, why?
You can't ban file sharing, because you would have to ban the entire idea of the internet and people would just resort to private modem-modem networks (thats if they didn't riot in the streets). So go face the music record companies - your days of extortion are over so go back to your coke sniffing and prostitutes lol
Why would anyone here buy a PVR? surely you would build your own custom box that also played dvds/cds/mp3s/games and pulled the tv guide from the net so you didn't have to pay per month. Then add network support for your home lan so you can watch tv from other computers _and_ then add internet and email and a remote and you'd have a machine to die for. come to think of it... why the hell doesn't someone actually get of their asses and manufacture this, then maybe it would sell... duh
If your rich, then your expected by society to donate money to charity, it doesn't make you a saint if you do, but it does make you unliked if you don't.
I think they are just scared that some terrorists will pay, and then de-orbit the ISS into the pentagon... now that _would_ be funny:)
This is all a load of crap - so now terrorists know not to live together, buy each-others plane tickets, or otherwise look dodgy.
Anyone, can be a potential terrorist, given the right conditioning. Its amazing how you can turn someones view about something around in minutes. Brains can be re-programmed just like computers, and with so many of them about, all you need to do, is say the right thing, and you have an army at your disposal - social engineering. The only real way to ensure your society behaves themselves is to brain-wash them first. Its much harder to convince someone to think differently when they've been told the opposite from childhood. Obviously you can't go about forcing this, unless you live in one of those backward draconian countries like the USA. You have to then realise that there simply is no way of ensuring that terrorists don't crash planes into stuff - the only safe plane, is an unplugged one.
In conclusion: don't piss people off, don't make tall buildings with lots of people in them (population density), and don't fly lots of big planes around.
This is too true. If drugs were legal, their price would just drop to the ground - just like what happens when a major company crashes.. hmm does no-one else see the connection here? The governments ban drugs because _they_ are the main dealers, they created the ban to raise prices so they could profit, if they lift it - the price will drop - drugs will be worthless, and they will loose an awful lot of money.
In England, most people never owned firearms anyway, and most never wanted to. I would feel less safe knowing there was a gun in the house, and that anyone on the street could be carrying a weapon. If your drunk, angry, or just have no idea what your doing, then a gun is a pretty stupid thing to be holding. The ban didn't solve much because now anyone can get a firearm on the black market (and there, they don't give you a background check):)
Doesn't VHS stretch and deform everytime you watch it? Its also non-random access. If they had _not_ put any stupid copy-protection scheame on, then maybe it would have worked. But otherwise, if people think this is the answer just because it supports HDTV, then they're going to be conned.
Why can't someone just develoe a decent format, using the prototype 50GB+ dvd-type disks. It could support HDTV, and would easily beat dvd in terms of quality at the normal resolution - (all that space) You could fit language sound tracks for _every_ country in the world (well most of them) and thus not have to re-print disks for each region. And here's the clincher - no stupid copy protection systems - no-one is going to bother copying the disks when A)the quaility is so damn high! (compared to a rip) (until the burners come along) B)The whole world gets the film at the same time (no regions). and C)the disks are sold at a reasonable price, considering how cheap they are to press.
It works for cds so why not for film?
To get the studios to adopt it, you cut out all the stupid royalties and licensing fees they have to pay on dvd. And protect it under some kind of GPL-like license that specifically says "no copy protection"
The players will be far cheaper since they don't have to incorporate all that stupid hardware for decryption, and macrovision. Also, you could make backwards compatable players that did play old dvds/cds etc..
Microsoft, the most innovative company in the world, has introduced the world to a brilliant new idea - from the makers of closed-source software, comes closed-source courts. Remember people: letting the public view court-cases is like a cancer, or a virus, it kills lawers' intellectual property. The way a lawer bull-shits is part of their creativity and protecting this will protect the winning of large corporations in anti-trust cases.
Don't worry though, the judges in america are all corrupt, so you can buy transcripts and recordings of the whole case for a small cough.. bribe.
Don't forget, it can take a long time to read through and understand code that even you have written, let alone what someone else has done and not commented. If the students can be lazy and cheat, then surely the proffs. can be lazy and use software....
Its amazing how much crap people will take. Its one thing to fill free-to-air tv with adverts, but when your paying a subscription (i.e for cable/digital/sat.) you better make damn sure your not putting adverts in it too. If the bbc started advertising, there would be riots on the streets, but if cable companies start taking fu*king frames out of tv that you have paid for just so those capitalist pig dogs can stick more adverts in, then no-one takes any notice. How does that work?
Its sick, how much money is wasted on software licenses. Maybe schools and uni's should just put it all in the campus furnace instead. Atleast that would keep the students warm.
The only thing you should be spending money on, is bandwidth, and terminals to access it... oh and food, and pr0n
Another example is to ask people to remove their shoes at the airport... it's a good thing the "shoe-bomber" didn't carry the C4 is in underwear or worse, inside his rectum... Can you imagine full cavity searches at airports?
YES!!! dude, killer! you have just given me the best idea ever!
So remember, when they are picking up bits of plane from the whitehouse, you can say "hey, i inspireed him to do that you know"
Suggest we start a massive flame on region encoding. May i start by saying:
"grow up america, we sit here quietly waiting for your region 1 dvds to be changed, and when it happens to you you start complaining. It was _your_ country if i remember correctly that started this whole scam with your capitalist pig-dog corporations. If i could be bothered, i would go hi-jack a plane and bomb something. However, i am lazy, so you are all safe."
when my communist regieme comes to power, all media will be made free, and the dogs will be taken out and shot.

I'm sorry, your babies DNA license as expired. The infant will be collected tomorrow by Microsoft Corp. Thank you for using the rent-a-baby service.
(c) Microsoft Corporation, DNA-DRM version 3
To fund it, their gonna hide advertising in the code - e.g. "printf("This kernel sponsered by Pepsi, for a coders everywhere");"
After the first month, all the advertisers will pull out because the listener base = 5.
When they've finished, someone will ring up telling them that they made a mistake in line 2,432,243 it was "x" instead of "y".
And Microsoft will probably have something to say about it all being evil...

True, arn't there supposed to be laws to stop monopolies?
Thats all very well, but Bush! man Bush!! We'rre dooomed i tell ya, dooomed. I'm not even in america :)

True, most people are not loyal to channels.. but don't forget channel 5 - most people won't even talk about _that_ channel, let alone watch it
Hmmmm... yes indeed... unlike here in the UK, where tv _is_ for the viewers, and the bbc has no adverts oh well:)
