On a similar rant, I generally won't do business with anyone on eBay who doesn't explicitly say that they will accept US Postal Money Orders. Personally, I prefer to use Paypal, but accepting USPS money orders is the gold standard for any merchant in my book. Why? In my book, anyone that won't accept such money orders is a potential fraudster, afraid of the law. If anyone screws around with a transaction that involves a USPS MO, it turns into a mail fraud case.

That's something that Apple definitely has going in their favor since they control the hardware and software as one integrated unit...they can change the whole damn thing around (68K-PPC-X86, OS=9 to OS X) to keep up with the times. Meanwhile, companies like Dell or Gateway are basically locked into X86 and Windows because they have no vertical integration of their own. Notice I didn't mention Microsoft here...because when you buy a computer, you're not buying it from Microsoft, they only make a component of the computer (OS).

"Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have vowed not to forecast the company's earnings because they worry about becoming caught in a trap that will require them to focus on short-term profits at the expense of what's best for the long haul.

The no-guidance policy has forced analysts to make educated guesses that previously vastly underestimated Google's rapid growth. And that helped fuel perceptions that the company could do no wrong."

    This story is 100% plausible.

Bill didn't say that his tax records were the *only* one on that special computer. It is very likely that Mr. Buffet's records are on that computer too, as well as the records for any high net worth individual with complicated tax situations. I completely buy the story. I work in estate and gift tax planning and at least from that perspective, there are myriad of complicated structures (ie LLCs, FLPs, trusts, promissory notes) that require incredibly intense accounting. And I'm not even exposed to the more esoteric tax issues.

I did some work for a billionaire with only a *fraction* of Bill Gates' fortune once and I had to invent a whole new set of models for keeping track of the spider web of entities. The guy's accountants had it even worse, because they had to keep track of transactions in hundreds of entities by and among various family members...I just had to track the data for one individual. It was my understanding that if this particular family ever underwent a Section 754 Election, where the cost basis of the underlying assets is adjusted to market value (or something like that), the cost in legal, accounting and IT resources could run into the millions.

However, the discovery process revealed that 700 people had received burns from their coffee (including passers-by getting splashed with it) over a 10-year period. Should coffee be hot? Absolutely. Most coffee is served at 135 to 140 degrees. Should it cause third degree burns? No. MCD served it at 180-190 degrees, with full knowledge that it would burn the mouth and throat at that temperature.
