"The "American Dream" is the notion that anybody, if they work hard enough, will strike it rich."
I think the "American Dream" is to simply be rich...but it doesn't go into details on how one should do so, which is why our citizens are being fucked left and right.
Since GWB is against stem cell research, should he pass on this treatment if his legs go FDR on him? Afterall, he wouldn't want to look like a hypocrite, would he?
In the Ultimate Spider-man comics, he isn't much bigger than Peter. Am I the only one who thought Toby McGuire & Topher Grace were the same person for several years?
And...if the two people emailing each other are in the same office, they should NOT send file attachments to each other! They should both work with the same file on the server. This happened today...a Word doc was going back and forth, the edited version staying in the Outlook message. No one realized that whatever happens to the copy of the doc in Outlook does not affect the original file sitting on the server. Long story short--the email was deleted along with the changes to the Word file. Guess who had to scan and OCR an old printout that had the info we needed?
I had someone get woried because they saw a vibrating banner ad that said "WARNING - Your computer is broadcasting its IP address!" My kingdom for a bottle of valium, please.
"the only thing you've purchased is the plastic and a license to use the content contained therein."
100% incorrect. Please do not *assume* that there is a license involved just because the work is protected by copyright. They are two different things. There is no license, period. The CD is your private property to do with as you please...except to distribute copies, which is covered by copyright law.
TFA doesn't get into figuring out the net profit margin, which, in layman's terms is the real, bottom line profit margin. 50% is a completely meaningless figure since, as everyone else is mentioning, does not include R&D or marketing costs. Sure, go on a self-righteous rant about Apple's marketing, but the cost is what it is. An earlier thread about Intel's "$40 to produce a chip" was in much of a similar vein and equally meaningless. Please, can we avoid these articles that essentially discuss gibberish numbers?
If Tivo got too restrictive, I would have no qualms about unloading it. I *really* only use it for Adult Swim, History Channel and Discovery Channel anymore. Can anyone comment if the Akimbo broadband-based, on-demand system is a good deal at this point? For $20 a month, I could get all their standard programming ($15) plus Adult Swim ($5). Yes, it uses DRM Windows Media format....HOWEVER (big HOWEVER), the difference is that you already know what you're getting into from the get-go. And, since it's akin to a rental system, the DRM in this case would be expected.

Series 2 has been network ready since it came out of the box. I bought mine in 2002 and it has never touched a phone line. As long as you bought a plain vanilla Linksys USB adapter you were good to go. The trick was to set the dial-out number to #401, which would initiate the network connection.
If your friend gives you a bunch of MP3's to copy to your iPod, that would imply that you're using it in "disk mode." Those files will be copied to the root directory of your iPod. Your regular iPod library that sycs with iTunes is located in a hidden "dot" folder. When you plug your iPod into iTunes, the syncing action only happens in that hidden folder. You could just as well have spreadsheets or jpegs in the iPod's root directory and they would be fine. Now, to be able to play your friend's MP3's on your iPod, you would have to mount the iPod as a disk on your computer and drag them into iTunes...upon doing so those song files will be transparently copied to the iTunes folder on your hard drive.
Intuition be damned...no computer interface is intuitive, period. If you use Office every day, you just naturally end up remembering where everything is and what the most useful keyboard commands are. Once that happens, you usually don't want some fluff interface slowing you down.
One major problem I run into in helping others with Office is that it hides less-used features in the menus...which means you never learn about all the other features. I turn off menu hiding wherever I encounter it.
Office 97 uses a license key, but doesn't phone home. I'm the only one still using it here at work on my laptop, whereas everyone else is on Office 2003 because we got a new round of Dells on the leasing program. I did, however, buy an upgrade to Outlook 2003. Word 97 and Excel 97 are just fine, but Outlook 2003 offers lots of new improvements that I use every day.
Everyone with POTS service should have a backup wired phone for emergencies, even if you stick it in the closet. I think a manual for a cordless phone I bought for my mother even said as much. Most cordless phones these days have a speakerphone and dial pad in the base, anyway. Even if you don't have POTS service, but have the jacks, you can still use the line to dial 911 in emergencies.
You can still get the "iPod Mini + HP" at Radio Shack.

Not true. There are plenty of explicit podcasts through iTunes. Soccer Girl Incorporated comes to mind. Even explicit video podcasts are there. Do a search for Insane Films in their podcast directory. Download the "Mommy Kills Best" video podcast and see who the prude is:)
The difference between Steve Jobs' wealth and the RIAA is that Steve grew his own business and continues to do so. The record companies want to raise prices for doing nothing. Being a billionaire is not necessarily a sign of being greedy if you work for it. The RIAA is a bunch of middlemen that lets others work for their wealth, so they are decidedly greedy.
Allofmp3 is *legal* in Russia, but if you look above the law, are the right people getting their due compensation? And no, I don't mean the "right people" in the legal sense.

"I thought it was like Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro - one guy who uses multiple names for tax purposes."
That's actually true...remember the movie "Heat" they starred in together? All done with mirrors, I swear.
Hellooooo??? "Wings," that little show on NBC that ran for more than a few years? Church played the lovable airplane mechanic, Lowell.

Heh, if that's true, I'll actually *pay* for my copy of Windows!
(Note to BSA: Just kidding...I have a legit copy.)

therefore everyone with hoodies and bandanas are gang members"
I've yet to see the exception to this rule. But the backpack and cell phone comments are right on.
