Indeed, why spend the effort to destroy when you can much much more easily disable? I'm thinking a tube or three of some cyanoacrylate adhesive and a sheet of quarter-inch particle board (cut into lense-shaped pieces, duh) can render ineffective quite a few of those pesky cameras!
Unfortunately, package management seems to be the great divide. What are you doing to bring One Package Manager to all Linux?
The thing of it is, "package management" and its bifurcations in the Linux world are an in-depth case-study of a much broader issue: software complexity and how to manage it. Granted, there are other platform-specific issues for every system but the crux of the matter is as stated.
A better question would have been: If the Fedora project and/or RedHat are dedicating not insignificant resources to tackling the software complexity issue, what is the Fedora Project's vision for its future package management solutions? And if the Project and/or Redhat are not dedicating resources to this problem, why is that?
Maybe, but "Lara Croft, Radar Stratigrapher" just doesn't have that ring to it.
I don't know... ever work in a lab environment with females? Yeah, that's right! It is inevitable that a boob (maybe even two at once!) is gonna brush up against you at some time or another. Oh, sweet bliss.
So "Lara Croft, Radar Stratigrapher" the game isn't likey to be very popular as I imagine it is hard to design a game in a labratory setting where the payoffs range from brushing up against feminine charms to discovering heretofor unknown tombs in Egypt. But, I bet "Lara Croft, Radar Stratigrapher" (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) would be a welcome "sight" in the Radar Stratigraphy lab. =)
The move comes in response to advertisers who claim that click fraud is costing them almost $1 billion dollars a year, and who have hit Google and Yahoo with lawsuits alleging negligence in fighting click fraud.
That's rich, advertisers are trying to sue for negligence and fraud. What's next, wives accusing their husbands of having a vagina?!
Why does the software matter at all? Every eula I have read states that the software is not warrented for any pourpose. I also think the GPL had the clause as well. Since the software is not warrented anyway why do manufacturers have to support it?
I'm not sure whether you posed this rhetorically, but it basically leads one to the meat of the issue: 1) software tells hardware what to do 2) no self-interested party will warranty software 3) it is incumbent upon (if not legislated) that manufacturers minimally warranty their products 4) the best way to ensure one's hardware does what it is supposed to do is to completely control said hardware, which means being in complete control of what software runs on it
Right now the only "reasonable" solution to this problem is to make sure only vetted software can run on your hardware. End of story, done. This is why we have "Trusted Computing." I don't like it, not at all, but it is something that hardware manufacturers feel they need to do to help ensure their revenue streams.
I tend to view the problem as a transient artifact of the current state of technology as it applies to content distribution and presentation. Therefore, it seems best to just let "the market" sort things out. Jiggering the GPL to strong-arm the desired results seems to me to be very much like over-legislating a "market" in hopes of "correcting" it--something that never seems to work.
Face it, it is hard for the would be dictators/over-control types to acheive their agenda unless.....they "THINK OF THE CHILDREN", to use an old/. meme.
I am pretty sure Sally Struthers was using this to pull the heartstrings of americans before Malda was an itch in his daddie's pants, and if not, well, at least long before Slashdot became an itch in Malda's pants. In summary, bzzzt, wrong! (About the old Slashdot meme thing anyway.)
Your analogy sucks. It sucks because it is based on the implicit assumption that none of the farmers will attempt to dominate and/or kill off the others.
okay, i was with you until you said "submitting homework in Powerpoint on floppy disks". i mean, for fuck's sake, when was the last time you saw a non-trivial ("Hello world!") word or powerpoint document fit on a floppy? sure, it can be done but after how much grief and with what frequency ?!
p.s. i realize you were probably being facetious with powerpoint skillfully mentioned in your essay, but i couldn't be sure and decided to call bullshit!
That said, it's easier to just cheat. Why is IM so full of "LOLs" and "U R so cool. C U l8r."? Mostly it's because people either can't type at all or are not very vast so they take those kind of shortcuts.
Most users have a hell of a time recognizing that they are being attacked by adware and spyware; about as hard of a time an autistic might have determining facial expressions.
It may be a bit of harmless fun because these guys don't get out enough to play football, but imho you take a deeper look at the subconsious/ mental subtext and damn well ignore these symptoms at your peril.
I don't know... seems to me a few high velocity blunt objects colliding with the afflicted's head is an acceptable cure--you cannot be a danger to society if you're dead (or drooling mindlessly). And with our healthcare system today, I can appreciate this out-of-the-box thinking!
i get ebay and amazon links for just about every goddamned thing i search for with google. they really need to clean up their ad system. maybe vetting advertisers or something would be the answer (hahahahah like that'd happen).
i hope something changes soon because i am getting tired of unscrupulous asshats poisoning my search results.
This situation has just about zero to do with FOSS. The reason that work is paying so little now is the availability of dirt cheap developers in India, simple as that.
The skill requirements as listed ARE entry level and 30-40k sounds about right for your random freshly minted college graduate.
that is a smart distinction to make, but i feel comfortable in declaring that sun's position (for the now) is that they will have better long term control over the standard/spec by maintaining control over the reference implementation. it is also worth noting that the reference implemnentation is of very, very good quality.
and no, im not a sun fanboi, but i am primarily a j2ee developer.
indeed. i refused to switch to xp until late 2004 because i was that fond of my win2k installation. vista seems to be on the exact same path (no matter where it started) as xp was to win2k--shiney, new, ooooooooooh; please.
that's good to hear from a non-fanboi player's perspective. and i hope, as you do, that the changes for the better continue.
something worth mentioning as well, soe does have a good great deal of experience running mmo's (they own the pioneer in the field afterall). this know-how is the one area where blizzard has obviously been lacking in comparison and it is why they are hurting.
yeah i know, grats captain obvious, but hey, i felt it did deserve mentioning explicitly.
Whoever designed the network either didn't understand the concept of scaling, or was just plain incompetent.
that sums up my impressions after playing wow for 9 months or so since its release last november (2004 not 2005). the network setup(s) theyve had just do not work for the load the game has generated. i think that short stress test semi-open beta they had (right before release) was cut short a few months too early. but hey, they had to trump eq2 right? whats funny is soe still got the jump on blizzard with eq2, even tho it's a turd too.
disclaimer: i've not played eq2, but being a soe customer since early 2000 and reading the mess that's been made of swg, i feel justfied in my poop slinging.

Intriguing sure, beautiful
I think you need to use preview, you mispelled worthless!
Plus blogs are usually fairly worthless.
Ahhhhhh, much better

Fox in the hen-house was quite apt.
I wonder whether this new config panel also includes "digg this configuration" links.
Why isn't this modded insightful yet? Goddamn!
Oh it's the 4th. Well, bummer dude, you wasted a good comment. It'll be burried come Wednesday
If, that is, you happen to be, or live in, a cube.
You sounded like Captain James Tiberius Kirk just then.

... Feel free to email me with the details of your problem if you're seriously stuck. I don't mean to put you down if I can help.
That's so awesome, to paraphrase: If I cant help you, you really are as dumb as I think you are!
Just poking some mild fun mind you. I chuckled and thought to share.
