    In my experience, the only sure fire way to have a disk fail is to place any piece of important, but un-backed-up, work on it


    Maybe this is some obscure evidence that there is an "importance" attribute to a quark. Following entropy, too much "importance" causes a destabilization of the quantum structure and the drive fails.

    Cancelling your credit cards may hurt your credit rating. Your credit rating has an effect on what interest rates you pay and how much you pay for insurance.

    What is neat, or not so neat depending on your point of view, are music files which deteriorate after a while. I don't know how they are made, but I have listened to music that sounds pretty good, but after the 10th playing it starts skipping.

    These are zoot files. Every once in a while, they skip a groove.

    comparing the shuttle fleet to consumer automobiles is disingenuous. A much more honest, but not perfect example is commercial aircraft. With proper maintenance, aircraft are kept flying for decades.
